Heidelberg, my Heidelberg. Many great poets have penned many fine words about this romantic city. Heidelberg has been our home these past two years, but I have done very few blogs for it. This, however, is not an all-encompassing blog and is mostly a focus on the photographs which I took on one trip downtown. When I awoke this morning, I saw snow outside the window and instantly decided it was time for me to get blogging. You see, we don’t see snow too often in our valley, and this winter was especially warm. It snowed around Thanksgiving and then the snow disappeared until now, the end of March. Anyway, my first stop today was the Heidelberg Castle. The castle is extremely eclectic, which can be mostly attributed to the span of its construction, lasting from ... read more

Last night, gathered around a cigarette-littered coffee table, I asked five strangers to plan my fate. I dont want my trip to become stagnant, so I decided to throw in a little spice. Ive recently been inspired by two books: Lonely Planet's Book of Experimental Travel and Lost Cosmonaut. The book of Experimental Travel provides suggestions for non-traditional iteneraries like closing your eyes and blindly scrawling your signature on a map, then following the line your signature makes. Lost Cosmonaut is a book detailing the adventures of an anti-tourist in the small area of Kazan in Russia. An anti-tourist! Someone who blazes their own path, off the map. How brilliant! These books together spurred the idea that while Im in Munich, Ill try to see things the tourists have no interest in. I will leave ... read more

After a brief train ride from Hamburg, we arrived in Berlin all smiles and joy, and made our way to easily the best hostel we've been in so far, called the Heart of Gold, and entirely (to a slightly worrying extent) based on Hitchiker's guide to the galaxy. We've done some sight-seeing, and like the last time I was in Berlin, the feeling of being in a place with very... recent history impressed itself upon me. The Holocaust Memorial, The Book-burning square, the wall, all have a very powerful effect which I've never found elsewhere, where the history isn't just in the past, its still affecting the present as well. We've done some awesome non-sight seeing stuff as well - went to see LCD Soundsystem do a gig in a club, which was fantastic, easily ... read more

We headed for Fussen early, and checked into our B and B (which is slightly better than and B and N). We wandered the relatively small town, wandered right out of the town and towards a waterfall, viewed said waterfall, then followed the flow of the river towards a big lake (which was disappointingly low in terms of water level, however the water was beautifully blue - being glacier water). Back in our room for the evening (after much too much work and walking for so few sights) we watched CNN world and MTV Europe on the ol tv, at groceries, and got to bed early. The next morning a delightful breakfast was brought directly into our room on a tray (I felt awkward, but it was cool nonetheless). The goal for the day, see Neuschwanstein ... read more

Cows European Tour 2007Cow Cat Finally we made it to Berlin!! Whooeee that was a long way, weather has been really cold and the back of Andy's bike is soooo cold. I gave in eventually and allowed him to stuff me inside his jacket, much warmer if slightly odourous...bikers do tend to get a bit whiffy on long journeys! Berlin is another beautiful place, and until 1989 had been seperated by a wall. The city had been divided into four sectors immediately after the second world war, French, British, American and Russian. Unfortunately the Russians didn't get on well with the others and they blockaded the city. The other countries airlifted food in for nearly a year between June 1948 and May 1949, before the Russians gave this up as a tactic. The Russian sector however ... read more
