Kiitos ... read more

It was an extremely early start to the day, as we had to be up at 5:45am to get to the train station in time for our 7am train to Frankfurt. The streets of Amsterdam were completely deserted apart from a few fellow backpackers, and (typically, after the rain-filled days we had endured) the sun was blaring down on the city-it was so pretty and peaceful, I was feeling quite upset about having to leave! But I've desperately wanted to visit Germany for years (not surprising really, when you consider the endless hours I've spent studying the place!) so just kept thinking of that as the express train pulled out of Amsterdam station. There was a group of Spanish teenagers on the train for the first couple of hours who all really, really reminded me of ... read more

Greetings from Germany Everyone. This is our last blog from Europe and we hope you all enjoy it. After finding our hostel which was surprisingly good, we headed into town to explore, the only problem with that was that we got rained out. Stephen thought it was a good idea for him to take his jacket, but not the hood and in fact no it wasn’t. So much so the hood hasn’t come off again. We decided to head out for dinner, luckily for us it was across the road to the Augustine Braushaus where we both downed a LITRE of beer. The glasses were massive and so heavy. We had decided it was a bit touristy for us, so we headed to another one just a few minutes away and it was tipsy mcstaggers distance. ... read more

On Wednesday, we went for the day to Dachau and Munich. Dachau was one of the lonliest, most terrible places on earth. I understand how important it is that we learn about the rise of the Nazis and such, but it is sometimes hard to subject yourself to something like that. I've been to the Holocaust museum in DC before, which is much more brutal/graphic, by the way, but it could hardly convey the sadness of actually standing in a place where so many people had died after being turned into figurative work horses. No one talked pretty much the entire time. Some jerkoffs (not with us, obviously) were playing cards there. It's just a place where respect is needed, and that made me mad that someone could be so cold. I really wish we had ... read more

A hang gliding adventure one day after the engagment? Coincidence? John decided that it would be an awesome idea to jump off the side of the mountain and I was going whether I liked it or not. So promptly at 9 AM our guides who were two 30ish year old stoners, Bernie and Dido, arrived at our hotel in a VW van. We did have a slight delay before loading in the van since Bernie and Dido had to remove the several cases of empty beer bottles strewn about the vehicle from a party the night before. But they did assure us that they had each had one additional beer that morning, so there was no hangover and thus nothing to worry about......... right. Needless to say, we both survived and it was really cool seeing ... read more

8 July: TRAIN TRAVEL IN GERMANY is a joy. Halle - Hannover 2 hours 15 minutes (travelling by car on the Autobahn you'd have to add at least another hour)! Thirteen minutes wait for the InterCity Express to Hamburg, 1 hour 20 minutes. And they are on time... by the second! I have a six-seater compartment -- like you see in those old movies -- window seat all to myself for much of the trip. Ah, feet up on the seat opposite (shoes off, of course), write on my laptop computer for a while, then doze as the landscape whizzes by -- from east to west. Conductor slides open the door to check my ticket, but of course no border police appears, like in the old days. After all, this is now one Germany, a united ... read more

After 20something hours of traveling, i have come to my destination! Ended up catching the train out of frankfurt at 830 in the morning. The ICE is FAST, speedo went well over 220 km/h. Because of the earlier train i had 4 hours to kill in nurnberg, walked around the old part of town, saw the sites and had a brat and bun for lunch. Arrived in coburg at 330pm where we hung around at home for a while then walked around downtown. Going to bed early as i've been awake for 30 hours now, so after a good nights sleep i should be jetlag free. Flying over what i believe is hudsons bay. This is what looking out the window when your flying down the tracks at over 200km/h. Lastly, this is the fountain in ... read more

After doing one days sightseeing we headed from Venice up to Munich through the picturesque Austrian Alps by train. Upon arrival at the Munich Central Station we were greeted by the sight of Germany's High Speed trains called ICE which look and go pretty damn fast. After doing a sightseeing tour by bus to see what Munich had to offer and a Barvarian beer tasting at the hostel we stayed at, we headed off to Stuttgart for the day. The reason for this was to go visit the absolutely amazing Mercedes Benz Museum. The building itself is an impressive piece of architecture as it is in the shape of a double helix so you end up walking two loops per floor. The array of vehicles on display was also incredible as it seems that Mercedes have ... read more

Today we took a great trip to the nearby town of Bergedorf. While there, we toured a castle, walked through the woods, stopped to play a bit, smapled the fare at a local street market, and thew kids shopped to their hearts content. We left in a sort of Seattle rain, more of a mist really. By the time we stepped off of the train in Bergedorf, it had stopped. We first stopped at a very old church for a look around at the old architecture and painting inside. After that, when we popped up to the castle, it was already full of visitors, so we changed things up a little. We walked through the gardens and trails through the woods. It was a great walk with many trees, streams and ponds. As we rounded the ... read more

Here are the only two pictures I took from day one and two of the Nuernberg excursion. On July 7th, we took some trains to the youth hostel. Nothing really interesting happened, other than the fact that we were all amazed at the city's beauty. Oh, Conner also fell down some stairs and messed up his back. No big deal, though. It was just a night to relax and chill. The hostel was a very cool part of a castle on top of a huge hill. You could see it from like a mile away because it was so high up. The bad news was that getting up the hill was always tough. There was some jerks there, naturally, and a mean old german lady complained about us to reception, even though it was her kids ... read more
