Well the easy days of an extended visa are over, gone, done away with by politicians. Gone are the days when all we had to do to get a 90 day extension was to ride the train to Dresden, or Vienna or Salzburg go into the train station, buy a cup of espresso and a nice pastry and get on the next train heading back to Prague and as the train entered the Czech Republic a new 90 day visa was stamped into our passports. It was nice, oh so nice while it lasted. All that changed with the Czech Republic became a full member of the European Union, the EU, and the Schenger Treaty became a the ‘law of the land.’ Obtaining an extended visa is a much more complicated and expensive process now. In May of 2007 I went to Asia. It was awesome... I first went to Hong Kong, then went to Erdenet, Mongolia where I worked with kids. Erdenet was great... it was wild. We stayed with a family of Nomads who slaughtered a goat for us. After that I went to Hainan Island, China. For two weeks we biked from the capital of Haikou to Sonya then back again. We stopped off in a lot of villages along the way. The people there were great... they were so kind and they all offered us nice hot tea, which was great since it was 103 degrees plus outside. I am sorry that I am so brief. I am leaving tomorrow for Africa and I do not have much time to write... most of you have heard ... read more

I have always been crazy, I have always traveled. In the past year I have lived and worked in 7 countries. Many of you may know me well or at least remember me. This blog is for all of my friends and family back home that I cannot be with when I travel. I go to Ghana in a week but I just wanted to give you an update of my life before I go on. Like I said I have always traveled but the real journey began on September 1st 2006 when I made the decision to take a long walk out of apathy. This is that Journey… ... read more

September 1st was the first day I started training for my Iron Man. Wow that was a crazy time in my life. I remember the first day, I remember throwing up after the first time I ran in Colorado. I remember every morning when the alarm went off at 5:00 am. Some people would call the race stupid and duly call me stupid for putting so much effort into it. But for me it was way more than a race. It was a dream that I had and a dream that I would complete no matter the cost. To me it wasn’t about the race, it was about changing who I was, it was about never going back to the lifestyle that I once had, it was about living live in the pursuit of Altruism. ... read more

It got mighty cold last night but by staying under my fluffy down comforter I stayed warm. I just hope none of my appendages were sticking out as I slept. I don't need a repeat of last year's brain-numbing flu. Once again Tyler was the last one ready for breakfast. When we finally were ready we headed downstairs to the totally quiet and deserted breakfast room. The smells of hot coffee let us know we were expected. As we walked into the Fruhstuckzimmer we could see Ralf had really laid out an impressive breakfast spread. Just like the breakfast at the much bigger Hotel Agon, this buffet table offered a variety of rolls, cheese, cold cuts, juices, hot and cold cereals and soft-boiled eggs. From time to time Ralf popped his head into the room to ... read more

When I first arrived in Dresden, even though I was exhausted and sick, I got a good vibe from the city. Something about it just seemed right somehow. Although nothing special - no crazy parties, no falling in love with German men, no big adventures in the Altstadt - ended up happening, and in fact it was incredibly cold and I was very sick the whole time, my opinion of Dresden just escalated the longer I stayed there. I felt really comfortable: the streets made sense to me, like they did in Dublin, the East Germans were fabulously friendly, and I just felt like I belonged. I loved it so much that I asked at the hostel for information on finding a room in a student flat in Dresden; I found out that to live in ... read more

Being in Berlin it was easy to jump a rattler and visit another german city for a couple of days. Dresden is only 2 hours by very comfy train and is famous for being almost completely decimated in allied bombing raids on 13/14 February 1945. Since then it has risen from the ashes and has been painstakingly rebuilt as a cute but kind of creepy replica. Now don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful town with lovely buildings, but it's feels almost a little too perfect in the way it's been rebuilt to replicate how it was pre-WWII. I arrived in Dresden late morning on what I'd say was has been, in my experience, a typical German day ... cold, wet, sunfree ... and in my excitement it was straight down to the Zwinger and it's ... read more

After a numerous amount of toilet stops (again….three girls…) and a lunch stop for goulash soup, we arrived in Dresden 7 hours later. Yes it was a long long drive, and to my unfortunate luck I am the only driver on this road trip as mum and Sam are too scared… Dresden like all the other towns and cities has an old part and a new part. Only the old part of Dresden is actually the new part due to the war, and we had booked into a hostel in the new part, which was actually very very old. Mum was in shock as our hostel was in the equivalent of ‘the ghetto’ of Dresden. In comparison to Munich, it was a disappointing city… but the history and the architecture made up for its dirty, gloomy, ... read more
