Date: 13.11.2004 Destination: Koblenz, Deutschland Day: 1 We use Schoenes Wochende ticket again for this trip to Koblenz, the place where the Rhein and Mosel River meet. The trip to Koblenz in the south needs 2 hours but as we no need to change any train, it is much more better than Kassel. We went there early and there was some friends there from Hamburg and local that become the tour-guide for the day. First stop was the Marksburg Castle, 10 minutes train from Koblenz. The castle is on top of a mountain but for me, it is just normal compare to England's. The old town below the castle has the medievel feels and we got lost for some time trying to find our way there. We follow a local guide around the castle and the ... read more

An early morning today, as it was a long journey up to St. Goar, a small town which lies along the River Rhine. Onwards we went, travelling along the Rhine until we arrived at St. Goar in the early afternoon. Unbeknown to us, there was a festival taking place that day. Paul had told us it was normally half-empty at this place, but it was packed solid with coaches and motor-homes. There were beer stalls set up everywhere, and the place was positively swarming. We went for a walk along the Heerstraße, checking out some of the shops before we went to the Beerstein and Knife Center along this same street. Her we had our beerstein demonstration, where we learnt about the different types of beersteins that were made. After this we went for our dinner ... read more

... read more

As some of you may be aware, my girlfriend Becca has joined me for the end of the trip.  We began together in the small german town of Bacharech on the Rhine River. We have spent the last two days siping local white wines, riding down the river in a boat, touring ruined castles, and staying with an old german lady how cooks a mean breakfast. We are having a great time and wish you all well!... read more

From Amsterdam we worked our way down to Germany's castle-studded Rhineland. Along the way, we'll stop in Arnhem to visit the Netherland's first and largest open-air museum. This morning, after a yummy breakfast at the Hotel Kranenturm we'll take a walking tour of Bacharach. Then we'll head to St. Goar and hike up to the mighty Rheinfels castle, overlooking the Rhine. We'll tour the castle and cruise the Rhine. ... read more

My first foreign trip was a school trip, after years of only doing UK trips to see usually relatives and often in Scotland this was by comparison very exciting. Bus from Banchory to Hull then the 'Norsun' ferry over to Rotterdamn. Drove thorugh Holland and deep into Germany to town of Bad Salzig on the banks of the Rhine. Included cruises on the Rhine and a trip to Phantasialand. It would be a decade before I made another foreign trip but at least I got to leave the UK and get a bit of a feel for a different culture.... read more

On August 17th after an all night MAC flight from McGuire AFB in New Jersey, my sponsor met me at the Rhein Main airport and drove the two hours to my hotel in Ramstein village. I checked into the hotel where I would stay until I found an apartment to rent. The village is next to the air base where I would work as a civil engineer and project manager for NATO Infrastructure projects at the headquarters of U.S. Air Forces in Europe. Housing was in very tight supply, but I used a local real estate agent and in about three weeks found a duplex in Glan Munchweiler, a small farming village about 16 kilometers northwest of the base. There was only one other American family in the village, Nan and Stacy, and we became good ... read more

February 16th 1972 - Day 4 A nice easy start to the day for Heather and I as our new friend from Stuttgart had promised to drive us to Heidelberg. One and half hours later and we were there. We were going to stay at Margit's house very near to the Centre. Margit was one of the students whom we had met in Bournemouth whilst she was studying English. Michael helped her with English conversation and Margit joined our social group during her stay. I did remember with some embarrassment that on her last evening, she picked some daffodils from the central park in Bournemouth to give to her B&B owner - ah well no harm really ! Margit had already left with Michael and so we talked with some of the students staying at the ... read more

February 15th - day 3 St Goar was an ideal place to have stopped overnight because it was opposite the Lorelei Rock which is the narrowest point of the Rhine. We admired the view before hitching South to Bingen and from there by ferry across the Rhine to Rudesheim. I travelled with Heather today. This region is certainly a beautiful part of Germany with the Rhine running through a long narrow gorge and the hillsides full of old buildings. Rudesheim was notable for its historic buildings and a couple of castles. Unfortunately we arrived on a Bank Hoilday and most of the shops and the cable car were closed. After a shortened look around we decided to press on towards Heidelberg. However it was not a good hitchhiking day. The first car took us close to ... read more
