Here we are, we have started our trip and the first stop BERLIN!!. Very spectacular city with great architecture, history and so many museums that I am ... read more

So, Back In September, after leaving Portsmouth, and bumming around London with a few friends, I decided to goto Germany and Holland. I had saved a bunch of cash in Portsmouth, considering I worked 60 hour weeks and hated the town, So I booked a ticket to Berlin. I had a strange feeling about it before I even left my friends in Camden Town, and when I arrived in the airport, a 45 minute drive outside of Berlin, I realized why I felt to strange. So, after I get through customs, I arrive in the airport terminal, and go straight to the Bank machine. So I pull out my new UK HSBC card and try to takeout 100€, and the machine says that this machine does NOT accept my card. After trying a few more, I ... read more

PSA: technical difficulties with pictures. This was typed last night. I'll be back up to date on Monday. Okay it is no longer East Berlin. But, I don't know which is more amazing: me walking through the Brandenberg Tor onto Unter den Linden into the heart of the old East Berlin; or, me now sitting in my hotel room typing this note whilst I listen to the Illinois football game over the Internet! A game that is happening 4000+ miles away...!!! And, it is equally amazing that our children (well, speaking with respect to us youngish parents...) will grow up with DDR meaning nothing more than a cool dance device. These are the same kids that hear Rhapsody in Blue and think it is the music from United Airlines commercials. Anyway... I slept 13 hours Friday ... read more

I woke up pretty early and was anxious to go exploring some more. I made it back in time to greet the other American girl who was here with the same program as me. After letting her rest a while, we went to the Brandenburg Tur and found a place to eat. We thought it'd be a good idea to walk back to the dorms, so that we'd get to know the area better, and after an hour of walking, finally made it back. That night there was a party one level down from my room, and we met some really nice people. Almost everyone was foreign, which was great, because along with practicing my German, I was able to speak English and Spanish with them as well.... read more

Berlin. (Okay, raise your hand if you hear the word "Berlin" in your head being pronounced by Eddie Izzard doing James Mason doing JFK??? And, BTW, I'll be going to the Rathaus Schoenberg tomorrow. That is where JFK famously outed himself as a jelly donut in 1963...) To begin with, this will be my first extensive blog entry. I suspect I'll ramble. Feel free to comment on how I'm doing. Berlin - so far vastly exceeding my memories of a very brief stop here five years ago. An astonishing place for a child of the Cold War to be able to so easily come to, wander around in, and soak up the history of arguably the most influential country of the 20th century. I arrived at the Grand Hyatt Berlin around 2:00pm CET today. It is ... read more

After a very long flight, I was picked up by Frau Grospitsch, the exchange coordinator for the German American Women's Club. She took me to what will be my home for the next ten months; Siegmunds Hof. I was quite tired, but decided to walk around for a bit and take pictures of the area around the dorm. It was sunny and warm, and I thought everything looked interesting and pretty. After returning to my dorm, I got to know some of my neighbors, and then finally went to bed.... read more

Well, I have finally found a good place for internetting here at the University. The connection at my host family's house, while better than many of my friends', is still pretty ghetto slow and costs a lot more than in the states. So I should be able to update this much more often. Just for the record, I also very much appreciate emails. So, lets see. The last blog was from the first day that I moved in with my host family. They are still an interesting bunch. My host dad, particularly is quite a character. He is a history buff and the whole wall of his office is covered with history books and diaries and pictures that he has collected over the years. He is an amazing treasure-trove of information and history. My german is ... read more

So I finally made it to Berlin. I am still jetlagged a bit but things have been amazing here! I got in on Tuesday pretty much on time. The flight was ok. The plane was remarkably crowded for an international flight. I mean, there were a lot of people, but the plane itself -- the seats, aisles, etc were very tight. It was a bit uncomfortable. Luckily, waiting at the airport I managed to find some of the other program members (including Peter, the guy who knows Megan! I feel really bad for him -- he is from New Orleans! Luckily he and his family and neighborhood are ok, but his city is essentially not there anymore! It is really sad. I have not been able to find out much because all my newssources are in ... read more

Well ive popped my head up again to give some kind of update of my travels; FYI im currently in Berlin, Germany, staying at a friends apartment for an as yet undetermined length of time... eventually this blog will catch up to where i ACTUALLY am! Yes so despite all the delays in Warsaw i still managed to make it to my flight on time and jetted off to Tallinn, Estonia. Despite some trouble finding my direction in the city, i managed to find the ferry ticketing office and bought a ticket across to Finland, and then got directions to the port of Tallinn. I missed the boat i wanted to catch to Helsinki, so had to catch a later, more expensive ferry :0( Also i later found out that on the boat that i missed ... read more

Day trip to Potsdam Charming town outside Berlin Lots of history. Penny met us at the S-Bahn and then we were off to Potsdam for the day. Potsdam is a city just outside of Berlin that is full of palaces and gardens. A touristy little place but a really nice day out, even with the rain. After finding a spot to park we walked over to Neues Palais which was built by Frederick the Great and had 100’s of sculptures and over 200 rooms (not that we saw all of them) that are richly adorned. One of the interesting rooms was where the walls were decorated with shells and semi-precious stones and rocks in sort of a mosaic style. It was just amazing to look at all the work that must have been put into decorating ... read more
