Berlin was an amazing experience. One I will never forget. We ended up staying a week because it was so interesting and cheap! We owe a lot to Chad Robertson and his roommates for putting us up and guiding us through Berlin. The first part of the week was cold. When you would step outside and breathe in you would lose your breath. Thats how cold it was. And it wasn't just because we were from Texas either. All the locals were complaining. It was something like the coldest couple of days in sixty years. So, when most sane people were staying inside we were out walking around all day. But, you actually get used to it...eventually. As I mentioned the first night was really a culture shock. The rock band was very friendly and open. ... read more

All the E-W streets in my neighborhood are named after anti-Nazi dissidents whom the Nazis killed. Liselotte Herrmann was a communist student...maybe she would've been a planner? I'm two blocks from two different tram lines, and a long way from any metro stop. But the trams are more reliable. Expensive bio-frisch-markt two blocks away, near the fishmonger, butcher, a slew of bakeries, two drugstores, and even a store that specializes in tea! Can't find the local post office. Lots of restaurants and cafes, a couple bars and a couple nightclubs. I'm three blocks from the big Park Friedrichshain, and two blocks from (a smaller park) Answalderplatz--Berlin is full of parks, really. Like Vienna or Paris, most of the buildings are at a regulated height...22m, I believe. You couldn't sleep higher than that, back in the day, ... read more

I've been here 2.5 weeks, so I thought I should start describing my apartment. I'm on the 3rd (4th?) floor in a building in a residential part of Prenzlauer Berg, which is part of Pankow, which is part of East Berlin. It's basically a studio, and since it can get quite cold outside, I often find myself inside...here. Exciting, huh? I have heat, hot water, and strong water pressure, so I cannot complain about anything...not having any of those would've HURT. So the flat is basically an IKEA commercial, and the motif is "beach towel blue". I had to buy a duvet cover and a few pillowcases are still needed. The girl I'm subleasing from took the linens but not the stuffing, as it were. She's in Hamburg for a while, and her instructions for the ... read more

In January 2006 we decided to take a trip to Berlin. Here the idea rose of not having ourselves on the picture all the time but to adopt a small green creature named Kermit! We adopted him at the shopping center of Potsdamer Platz the first day we were there. We wanted to explore the city a bit and go clubbing! Friday 20th of January Our trip started disastrous as we were to fly from Maastricht-Aachen Airport in the south of Holland. Upon arrival we heard the news our flight was canceled. Easyjet re-booked us for the next morning and we got to Berlin around noon. We headed for our Bed & Breakfast but had to pick up the keys first at the owners workplace. He works at the leather and fetish shop Mr. B. We ... read more

Well don't know what we were thinking but we ended up in Berlin for New Years and a beautiful -7 degrees welcomed us on arrival. Yeah the thought of being home by the beach sounded real good at this stage but then again we can do that next year. Berlin had a snow dumping the day before we arrived so we were greeted with snow everywhere. We went straight to our hostel where we relaxed for a while before heading into town for dinner. The city was buzzing for New Years but with the weather so cold it made it hard to be outside so we were back at the hostel by about half 12. The next day it was warmer so we decided to venture into town to do a walking tour that had been ... read more

First of all- even though I know I'm a little late- HAPP NEW YEAR!!! Hope you all had a fantastic night out with friends and family- welcoming 2006! (good god- makes me feel real old) I wish all of you all the best, everything that I wish for and lots more!!! Enough of all that. Now I will give you a brief idea on how we Germans celebrate on such an occasion... Well we all get dressed up in our best Lederhosen and a hat, we than start playing old folk songs and start dancing while we slap our trousers, feet, faces etc. etc. After we've finished that we start eating lots of Sauerkraut and when we filled our massive bellies we get out some descend German beer and listen to our favourite tunes from David ... read more

28th December - Departing a little after lunch time and arriving late afternoon in Berlin.. we only had time to really settle in and grab a cocktail or two at the Palm Beach Bar close by. Although this was definetly long enough to establish that it was FAR colder in Berlin and that they had had a significant amount of snow fall!.. not yet preparing us for the weather the following day though! 29th December - I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO COLD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!! Today the temperature was -4 degrees celcius as a maximum temp! (which i was later told, actually was -6!!!), gale winds heading up the side streets from the main ones while stepping cautiously on the ice... but while snow was still falling I had a little contentment..! This did not ... read more

Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you all had a peaceful one with friends and/ or family and lots of presents! After paying my annual visit to the “Weihnachtsmarkt” I once again discovered why I love Berlin so much even when the weather is not really the best. And after being slightly(!) funny I went to see some of my best friends in the evening and because I started on the Gluhwein already earlier that day I thought it may be good to just continue on exactly that fluid. Good idea- not…! Basically almost all days before Christmas looked like that. It was good to see friends and family after such a long time. On Robins birthday we started (and almost were incapable of stopping) my favourite game - table soccer. Reminding me, as usual, on the good ... read more

Here I am back in Germany. I had a pretty good trip- first I was only booked to economy class- but after asking the guys on check in it all came clear that the only seat worth for me was somewhere in the first row of the first class ;) Good Lord I am spoiled. Anyway- same same applied for the flight out of DXB to FRA. Once I got there I wasnt really sure whether I made the right decision to go home during wintertime. The warmth drained out of me and my smile froze instantly as the cold embraced me. And I started to wonder if it would be noticed if I simply kept on sitting in my seat and return to DXB??! Something else hit me straight away as well- its going to ... read more

So this city is the COOLest place I have ever landed. I arrived on saturday in the midst of a foggy evening, and all we could see was an outline of the TV tower looming over us... it gave the whole city this futuristic, space-age feeling. Hold onto your hovercrafts, because that was just the beginning of an absolutely wild ride! The entire city is full of really great people who love to help you out, and service everywhere is phenominal! Berliners are very tolerant and friendly, and will chat with you for hours if you want. This city has a funky underground feeling that kind of reminds me of Los Angeles with all of the local beauties and buffs impecibly well-groomed and hanging in the hot spots. Also, this town is flat and spread out ... read more
