Had breaky in the room. Put a load of washing on which was new and got to watch a bit of the hawks in action on afl.com.au just before lunch (yes Davo, we got spanked) Walked down to KaDaWe via the Ku'damm which is apparently the biggest department store in Europe and it is pretty damn big - 7 huge floors, had lunch there - currywurst, we dumped Michael at their groovy child care centre (more fun for hom than looking at stuff with us) and had a look around - it was all too expensive, the highlight for me was the €116,000 stereo on display - awsome, MTL I think it was and had the weirdest looking speakers. We then had afternoon tea near the bombed church left as a reminder of the war. A ... read more

INTRO One of the more curious political alliances I witnessed on the Hill was that between Henry Hyde and Jesse Jackson, Jr...both Illinois representatives but the similarities end there. They teamed up to almost succeed in, as I recall, redirecting FAA money away from O'Hare towards building a new airport to the south of Chicago. When JJJr spoke on the House floor about it, he held up a tourist's map of Chicago, and shouted, "my district isn't even on the map!" Well, think about it. The 660,000 Chicagoans he represents live in a part of town where no tourists go and, one might say, would never want to go. Would a new airport help? Ask someone who knows... I offer this to introduce my favorite travelblog posting (to date). Over the past few days I went ... read more

Did a bit of shopping in Leipzig - Gabrielle bought some jeans, bought Michael a Bob Der Baumeister top, Corey bought a sausage. Drove to Berlin - pissing down rain, doesn´t stop most Germans from driving at breakneck speeds. Found the hotel (actually apartment) about dinner so went across the road to a supermarket and bought stuff for dinner and cooked it in our room - 2 sausages for me. sc = 4... read more

Well today was an interesting day.... I am not going to say a happy day, but it was one of great reflection on the information and locations we witnessed. We took a tour out to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp just outside of Berlin. This is one of the first concentration camps that the Nazi's built completely fresh at the beginning of their reign. This camp was to be used, and was used, as a model for all other concentration camps put up by the Nazi's. I don't really know where to start with describing this camp, it sort of takes your breath away. Honestly, the conditions were so terrible, its tough to think that any human could inflict that much pain and suffering on another human being. I'm a bit conflicted about the whole experience. On ... read more

Hello to everyone. Well we have had an awesome day! I am so tired! Thats the sign of a good day I think. We went on a bike tour with the Fat Tire Bike Company, seriously these guys are so good, the bikes are so comfy, and its definatley worth it. We were on a general Berlin city tour, we saw so much! Lots of the same things as yesterday, but it was a bit different just because we were on bikes vs. walking and had a different guide. First we went to the statue of Karl Marx and Engels (his writing partner). This doesn't mean much to most people, however it does to me because I was forced to read most of these guys' famous works (ie. the Communist Manifesto) in my sociological theory course ... read more

Hello everyone! We arrived in Berlin yesterday on the train, using our rail passes. Our first train experience was went relatively smoothly, we got to the station, got on the train, sat in the wrong spot but then got re directed with no problems, had a nice train ride.... The seats, to be frank, made my ass numb, but that was fixed with some bathroom breaks and a couple of walks, no biggy really. It was also really nice to see the country side. The only thing is that people smoke on these trains, or we were in a car where people could and HOLY CRAP did people ever smoke. Seriously, as soon as we got across the border and the Germans got on, I was coughing a lot. Its funny, my tolerance for smoke, I ... read more

Geo: 52.5235, 13.4115This morning we did the Third Reich walking tour of Berlin. We met our guide who's English was excellent. Saw some of the buildings that survived the bombing. Found out that the SS didn't want the Brandenburg Gate destroyed, so the made 16 replicas around the city and camoflaged the original- their plan worked as it survived. Saw an old watch tower and other parts of the wall. Next thing we were standing on top of Hitler's bunker where he killed himself. Now there is just a car park and road on the road. We then saw the Jewish Memorial which is a monument dedicated to the many German Jews who lost their lives. After it was built it was discovered that underneath the site is where Goebbel's (Hitler's 2nd in charge) was and ... read more

This morning we hit the road at 6am and had breakfast on the bus. We had a lot of driving to do today, had a couple of stops and lunch at a truck stop -yum. Mid-afternoon we reached the Polish/German border then finally arrived in Berlin and started straight off with a driving tour of the city. First stop was the East Side Gallery which is part of the Berlin Wall that has been graffiti’d/decorated. We saw the Brandenburg Gate, Parliament House, the hotel where Michael Jackson dangled his baby over the balcony, the Holocaust Memorial and other buildings. We had a walking tour planned for the next day so we went to our camp and set up. It was a beautiful river side site and the showers were great- clean and hot. The next morning ... read more

Geo: 52.5235, 13.4115This morning we hit the road at 6am. Brad gave us a breakfast on the bus, which was quite good. Then had a sleep. Then watched Ocean's Eleven. Slept again. Stopped for lunch at a truck stop and ate in the car park among the polluting truck exhausts. Finally started reading a novel I got two months ago. Mid-afternoon we reached the Polish/German border. Once again I missed out on passport stamps. Finally arrived in Berlin. We did a driving tour of the city. First stop was the East Side Gallery, which is part of the Berlin Wall that has been graffitied/decorated. We drove to Berlin on a cold and rainy day via the Scharnebeck boat lock where boats are moved up and down in a huge lift in place of many locks. It sits as a 10 storey building, in the midst of a rural landscape where it creates a vital link in the canal traffic between the mountains, the flatter northern industrial areas of Germany and the North Sea. It is an amazing concept and one China is emulating on the Yangtze. We saw another wrapped schloss (castle) in Ludwiglust and began to think that Christo is franchising! This schloss, as others, sits amidst huge 150 acre parklands and dates back to the 1730’s. It was built for Duke Frederick von Mecklenburg-Schwerin and as we had visited another of his homes the day before in Schwerin ... read more
