We're still shaking off the combination of jet lag and weather differentials so forgive my brevity if this entry seems a bit skimpy with regard to verbosity. We arrived in Germany at 6 in the morning, picked up our rental car. Arrived at our hostess's apartment about 8. I met Melanie in September when I came over to spend a week with Noah. We're both members of Couchsurfing.com which is basically a crash pad site for people who are not only tight with money but also like to meet and talk with the locals. Melanie is a sweet gal and makes the best cup of coffee to be found in Germany. Bar none. We met Noah and his crew that night at a Wiesbaden Bistro called the Whiskey and Soda. Great bunch of people. Those who ... read more

I have made it safely. The flights over here weren't too bad. Once I landed it was 'hurry up and wait' for the next half day. I live in "the shining" (as in the horror movie) part of the living quarters, so named because this was the psychiatric ward when it was a Nazi hospital. This might explain why I am up at 1 AM local time writing this blog. I went to sleep around 8 and now I am ready for my first day. The group I am with is full of hard core skiers and adventurers. I am the only one from the south. Apparently we are the envy of the rest of the staff because we have such a glamorous job. I went out with some veterans this evening and they were accommodating ... read more

Woo-hoo ! We're at the top of Germany ! Today, our little group decided to visit the very south of Germany, which also happens to be the tallest part of Germany! That's right - we went skiing on the Zugspitze in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. That has a nice ring to it. At least, it would if you skied. I did not. Instead, I rented skiis, walked out the door, looked down the slope, and walked right back inside. No way was I going to try to work my way down a sheer drop in those freaking uncomfortable ski boots. I grew up in Illinois. To those of you unfamiliar with the particulars of the midwest of the United States, people from Illinois are endearingly known as "flat landers." It's pretty self explanatory - we're great at farming, but ... read more

Man did I sleep well. Its 7:30 and I’m up rolling out of bed and heading for the bathroom. Everyone’s asleep and I’m going to get up shower and have a nice quite breakfast. Woo, Hoo I love these Germany baths there the size of a phone both for midgets. I’m finishing my shower when the door flies open; Hey I’m in here, as Heady walks into the bathroom. She screams, I’m hollering STOP!!!!!!!. Well my quite morning just went south. I’m out of the bath and downstairs trying to not make eye contact with either Bill or Hedi. The Inn Keeper meets at the bottom of the steps asking in his broken English “VIS EWERYSHING OK”? I respond Ya Ya Ya…. As I make my way to the breakfast table he’s following me “VHATS DER ... read more

Wake up it’s time to get up and get ready, whhaatt, get up it time to get ready. What time is it? It’s time to get up and get ready; I want to get on the 6:30 AM flight to ATL. Aren’t we booked on the 7:30 flight, yes but I want to try for the 6:30 because it has more seats. I thought the 7:30 had enough seats did something change. No I just want to get to Atlanta. So I rolled out of bed and looked at the clock, its 4:30 AM. So it begins Kirsten and I are heading to Germany, Bill and Hedi are already there and waiting for us to pick them up in Wangan. We had been checking the flights daily and last night saw that lots of folks were ... read more

We woke with the sun shining through our window. We both slept very hard. We packed our stuff logged onto the computer and updated the BLOG and checked on the flights leaving Zurich. They didn’t look good, I told Kirsten it was ok for her to go and I would follow on the next available flight. Her response cannot be entered into the blog. Basically, she said we would travel together. After putting everything into the car, we went to have breakfast. Lara our hostess was sadder than we were about leaving. She loves Kirsten and wants her to stay and help her with her running the B&B. Kirsten was rolling around the idea until I popped that bubble and said Mandy, Will, Mark & Caroline need you more. By the way breakfast was delicious. As ... read more
