Well Ive been in Munich for a day now, but I dont like it as much as Berlin. Perhaps because berlin had better maps available, or maybe because I understood the stuff that was there better, the berlin wall and such. Or maybe it was becaue of the Döner Kebabs. Lol I dont know, but today was very rainy, and I think that tomorrow we will try to find the famous beer hall here. Oh, and it was funny, 2 guys staying at my hostel were stationed in germany and are on leave right now, made me think of you joe. Its sunday so everything is closed, markets, stores pretty much everything, very different from the US. We just walked around and since its sunday we can get into some cathedrals for free and look around. ... read more

Yesterday I went to visit the Dacchau concentration camp memorial. Nothing that I say in this blog will do any justice to the experience or to the people whose lives were affected by the concentration camps. I saw the grounds where so many people were prisoned, tortured, forced to stand at attention for roll call, cremated and forced to live in conditions so horrible that I cannot fully understand. I entered the camp through the same gates where prisoners entered and the gate reads Arbeit Machi Frei or Work Will Set You Free. No matter how many pictures or stories I hear I can never fully wrap my head around what transpired in these camps and furthermore what motivated and drove their creation and maintenance. Even today it felt as though the place sucked the life ... read more

Ended a sobering day at Dacchau with a trip to the Hoffbrauhaus with John, a USC student. The hoffbrauhaus is everything you think of when you think of a German Beer Garden...the best part besides the food and people was the OOm-pah band, a bunch of old men decked out in Lederhosen jammin away on fiddles, violins guitars etc. I know I will disappoint many of you when I tell you that I did not join the rest of my company and have one of the gargantuan steins of German beer, I stuck to my apple soda...I know, I know, slap me on the hands now. I think however, I enjoyed watching people enjoy their steins more than I would have enjoyed one of my own. I did however indulge in some yummy Apple Strudel with ... read more

I had to do a couple double takes on my run through Englisher Garten this morning, )which is by the way one of the biggest if not the biggest urban garden in Europe=. I got in to Munich last night from Prague, which is just a short 5 hour train ride-its closer than it seems. This morning I woke up and went for a run, one of my favorite ways to explore a new place for the first time, especially when you go in the morning and there are no tourists out yet and you feel like you have the city to yourself. Double take numero uno- SURFERS. No you are not crazy do not worry, you are right Munich is not on the coast and does not have access to any ocean--all the more reason ... read more

We have now arrived in Munich, famous for its beer halls and Oktoberfest, unfortunately its only April! The past few days in Berlin were very productive. We did a Free Tour of Berlin (which is actually not free because you are expected to tip..but the guides are so fantastic you want to anyway.) Our guide was a tiny little girl from America, with a massive voice but perhaps I repeat myself. The tour took us all around a city that has to be one of the most volatile in recent history. In many ways it seems that the end of WWII was the start of their problems rather than the end, apart from the fact of course that they were on the losing side. Like the nighbours, Prague, Berlin became a Communist city, but not all ... read more

Germany seemed big when we didn´t know how to drive on the right hand side of the road and none of the street signs made any sense. Actually, the place is really tiny. We had been planning on spending a few nights in Rothenburg, but when we got up and visited a few sights in the morning, we felt we might as well see how far we could get in a day. My foot has been troubling me since we arrived - I think I have sprained something in it - and after a few hours walking it gives up completely. A day driving in the car seemed to offer the required respite from pain. It worked and we made it all the way to the Bavarian Alps before lunch. The way the country changed was ... read more
