About to start another working day. Yesterday was full of awe and revelation. M. Houellebecq's win in the Prix Goncourt took no one by surprise but did generate a lot of sales for the book. Gilles highly recommend that I read Purge by Sofi Oksanen which has just been translated into French and is set in Estonia during and after WW2.I'll have to see if it has been published in English. The French seem to have an even greater penchant for Scandanavian authors than the English speaking world. I am also discovering that there are quite a few works by local authors. I spent yesterday morning in large format literature. The wall of Le Pleiade titles is rather striking and I even got to witness someone buying one! These are the beautiful sleeved leather bound editions, ... read more

Yesterday, Monday, I spent my first full day as guest bookseller at La Galerne bookshop in Le Havre. This large bookshop over two levels offers a wide range of books across many different themes. I spent the morning in bandes dessinees and the afternoon in essais/beaux livres. There are BDs in many genres from historical and realist to BDs for young girls and children. Among the ones for young girls was one that celebrated shopping! I don't think that I will be ordering that one for Language International. Pascal runs the department was very warm and welcoming. He was happy to show me his favourites which again gave me another perspective on the genre. The strangest one so far (or should that be, most obscure?)is the BD that mocks wine critic Robert Parker. The essais/beaux livres ... read more

Wet Sundays in Le Havre are very quiet. We are the only people in the hotel today. A market set up below on Sunday morning so we had a look around that. Had to tell myself that I cannot buy kitchenware - it is too heavy and I know that I will be bringing back quite a few books, already having accumulated a few (gifts and purchases). It rained most of the day. We had a walk around the market and then had an excellent goulash soup for lunch. We walked to the tourist bureau after lunch which is opposite the waterfront and then went to an exhibitiion of maritime paintings and ephemera by Roger Chapelet. This was a lovely exhibition and a talk was given on the technique of gouache - the medium favoured by ... read more

Sunday 24th October. I got up a bit later today, I was starting to feel 'jet lagged', do you know what jet lag is? It's when your body is trying to get used to being in another time zone and you kind of feel a bit tired and want to sleep at all funny times of the day. You know that France is in another time zone to where you live, so when I'm writing to you now it's still night time for you and you're asleep but here it is day time. Isn't that weird when you think about it?! I hope you had a good nights sleep and enjoyed your weekend with Mom and Dad and your brother. This afternoon I went to the local riding stables to see the horses there, they are ... read more

Saturday October 23rd: We left for Normandy on Saturday morning all 5 of us, that is Alison, Ludovic, the cat, the rabbit and me! Today is the start of school holidays in France and French children are off now for the week. The weather was lovely and sunny but still quite cold. The drive out to Normandy was fun. We took the A13 motorway heading west and then did the rest of the journey on the country roads until we arrived in the village in Normandy called Saint Pierre du Mesnil which is near to a town called Bernay. The village is very small with no more than 100 inhabitants and the houses are also quite small with lots of wooden beams, some houses have straw on the roof (thatch). The village is so small though ... read more

Next door to our time-share is a highly rated, gourmet restaurant in a country hotel. Last night we celebrated our trip and my birthday with a special night out. The restaurant-hotel is set in a restored 1600's mill over the Seine River. It is considered one of the true treats of France. We began with a walk beside the Seine River on a clear evening with stars and a bright moon. We were greeted by Pierre and seated in easy chairs in front of the fireplace for our appertifs. I ordered a kir royale and Gary had a martini; they were delivered with a tray of cheese puff-pastry. After deciding on our dinner choice, we were shown to our table in the dining room. This room seats 20 to 30 people and is decorated with crystal ... read more

A strike in France can put a damper on one's plans. The strike is mostly affecting the national fuel supply and the delivery system. Therefore, there is very little fuel at the gas stations. It is only a good idea to conserve in order to be sure to make it out of France at the end of the week. Yesterday, we were able to fill up and decided to visit the D-day Beaches. As we drove on the freeway, we saw the smoke from strikers burning tires in Caen and the 45+ minute lines to buy fuel at the few stations that still had some petrol. Gary remembers that his late brother Frank was in Paris during 1968 when there were student protests and national strikes that lead to the fall of the DeGaulle government. The ... read more

With a husband who loves WWII history, of course our trip has had several visits to World War II locations. One of our first days in Europe was to visit the Anne Frank House. While in Berlin we spent time at the Reichstadt, Brandenburg Gate, Check-point Charlie, and the many memorials. Later we visited Terezin in Czech Republic and the Jewish Ghetto. Of course while we were in the Munich area, we spent time at Dachau. Later that week we were in southern Bavaria and saw Eagle's Nest (Hitler's country getaway and the documentation center at Ober-Salzburg. A week or so later we were in south Belgium and stayed in Bastogne, learning more about the Battle of the Bulge. This Monday was spent at the Beach (D-Day Beaches to be exact). We headed out to the ... read more

Ratings explained: JAC- Just another church 1* - worth a look 2* - Good Times 3* - Unmissable + - emphasis on the rating Let me start our coverage of the North Western areas of France we visited by talking about Roundabouts on the road. The French do a pretty darn good job decorating them, as we drove throughout France we saw many cool roundabouts; many have fountains in them others have sculpture, it's often a nice touch that adds just a little extra to the charm of the traveling in France. We started our arrival into the 'North West' area of France in Dinan, a pretty town perched on a hill over a beautiful river valley. As it was evening we decided on dinner out at the fine Dinan 'Terrace Cafe' which had a ... read more

Looking forward to 3 hours sleep before breakfast. Despite being one of the lucky ones to grab a big armchair, I still managed little more than a brief head-bob on the ferry crossing. The guys who just lay down on the floor probably had it best in the end. Can't complain though, after a week of awful weather in London it couldn't have been better for the ride down to Newhaven. Big thanks to those who came out to see me off, just like being on le tour...... read more
