... read more

November 15, Swiss railroad to Zurich Zipping through the lovely Swiss countryside, wondering who in this rather wealthy country is poor enough that they have to live right beside the railroad tracks. I am, I assure you, immensely relieved to be here at all. Beginning with yesterday: so much rain we decided to call a cab to take us to the museum. Sorry, sir, we have no cabs. Good luck, aura revoir. So we walked through a light but steady onslaught. Okay, not too bad. Except for the glaringly empty and available cabs which kept going by on the wrong side of the street. Having endured, er, enjoyed the delights of the Yves St. Laurent exhibit yesterday, we came out to find that it was pouring rain. We actually knew that from the exhibit because you ... read more

November 14, 2019 Lyon, France Anyone care for life’s little ironies? Two days I’m too sick to leave the apartment. Tuesday and Wednesday: bright sunrises, clear skies, brilliant sunshine. Today,? I finally managed to sleep, I’m feelin’ a million times better, I feel NORMAL!. Ready to see more of the town on our last full day! Of course, it’s rainin’ an’ blowin’ and cold. (Not Edmonton last weekend cold, mind you.) Yeah. Shrug. What ya gonna do? (I have read a LOT of books in the last couple of days – thank God that for the lovely Internet and Edmonton Public Library’s digital collection! Susan has read a lot, cleaned the hell out of this place (again) and only really gone out for groceries a few times.) We need a break from all that non-stop literary ... read more

A cold has knocked me down for two days. Had to cancel lunch with Franck. Susan has had to take herself out. Just bits from before: - meeting Marley, a gorgeous steel blue Great Dane so big and so friendly that when he leaned against my legs and wagged his tail, the action almost knocked me off my feet. - the two incredibly friendly and helpful clerks at our local grocery store, who always greet us with big smiles. - finding more good restaurants, including a one Michelin star where lunch was worth every penny. - being given "our" table at L'Eau Salee. - sunshine on the Saone through our front windows. That's all I got for now. Feeling better but no energy. Adding some pics for you. The menu is from La Mere Brazier, THE ... read more

Remembrance Day, 2019 Lyon, France Sorry about the absence of entry yesterday, those of you who were waiting anxiously for the latest gems to trip off my keyboard. I have been fighting a cold/cough for, geez, most of this vacation. Most days it has gone pretty well, but yesterday was, hm, shall we say, what’s the right word? Crap. Yes, that’s it, crap. Today is much better and, since I have had COFFEE!!!, the world is a significantly cheerier place. So, while Susan is going though her preparations for the day, I have time to write to you. Come to think of it, this is the first time I have been able to work to my customary schedule, blogging in the morning, on this entire trip! (Some mornings, I have had a double espresso and then ... read more

NOW I know “bouchon” is French for BLOCKAGE!!! Sheesh. Technically, it can mean either “cork” or “traffic jam”. You get the idea. It is ALSO the name of a traditional Lyonnais restaurant, where huge amounts of pork products are served. Along with huge amounts of pretty much everything else they can possibly cram into a customer, it turns out! Our volunteer guide this morning, the charming Anne, recommended a really good one only steps from our apartment and we thought we would give it a shot as we wandered homeward after the tour since we would walk right by it anyway. The place was empty except for a family party of four. The waiter seated us efficiently at the very far back, at a table for two on a small landing right next to the kitchen. ... read more

Lyon, Halloween night Sorry there are no pics today but Wifi was down for a while. Now it's too late and I'm too tired to fight with this machine. Tomorrow, I promise to come back and insert them. Happy Halloween! (Has one ever gone by without someone making a “nice mask” crack? On such tiny coincidences are perfectly ridiculous themes built. Keep reading – you’ll see!) Here in FIRST class on the TGV Lyria headed for Basel, Geneva, Mulhouse and Paris. Well, in eight or 10 minutes we’ll be headed there. We are such experienced travellers now! No more do we sit in first class seats waiting for someone to come along and tell us to move, laughing lightheartedly as we helplessly waive vouchers showing that we have actually paid for the space. Not that that ... read more

We had a beautiful day today in Lyon. Kasie and Sriracha were with Clara and her family at an amusement park outside of Lyon. We planned to take to train to a vineyard outside of Lyon. The concierge at the hotel had given us instructions on the trains we needed to take. Unfortunately it was bad information and we were not at the correct train station. We decided to abandon the idea of the winery and walk back to our area of town as we had not seen this area of town. We had nice walk along the river. We had lunch at a restaurant on rue de Boef. After lunch we went through some of the shopping areas and then over to the art museum. We walked through the art museum. We saw lots of ... read more

Today we met with Clara and her family. In the morning we walked through old town until noon. We met Clara and her family at Moustache for lunch. We had a great time talking about when Sriracha and Clara were together in both th U.S. and in France in 2016. Clara and Charlise both go to school and have English in school so they both speak it very well. Virginie and Jimmy both speak some English as well so we didn't really have any issues with conversation. After lunch we took the Funiculaire Fourvaire, an uphill tram that is part of the Meto, to see the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere. The basilica was very beautiful. The overlook of the city was amazing. We walked down past the Roman Theatres and then through the gardens back ... read more

Travel today from Paris to Lyon. Took the subway from near our hotel with one transfer to the train station Gare de Lyon in Paris to Lyon. We got our tickets and waited for our train. It was on time and we had no issues. Once in Lyon it took us a bit to find the Metro station to take the subway to our hotel. There was construction going on and we had difficulty finding the stairs down, but after we figured it out we had no issues on the subway. Our hotel is only a few minutes walk from the subway station Bellecour. Sriracha was again taking pictures all day, but those will have to be added later. We had dinner at a nice restaurant with the creme brulee to finish the meal.... read more
