Just like in 2015, we bought tickets to the Women's World Cup not even knowing if the USA Women's team would even be in the finals. But of course, the USA Women's soccer team is better than all soccer teams, women or men, to ever exist in my opinion; and they did end up getting into the finals. No offense, but the USA women's soccer team is the only bit of patriotism I have. So we went to Lyon and this would be the first international trip with my sister, Maja. The first day was sight seeing around Lyon and the first journey was a tram to a church. Now, I am not a big fan of churches, because I am not a fan of organized religion so it made me a little queasy, but it ... read more

Friday 12th April We had an early start from the hotel to be at Gare Avignon TGV for our train to Lyon. Once again a very fast and smooth trip, but difficult for the 22 of us to board and alight. We delayed the train a few minutes in doing so, and before arrival at Lyon the train screen had a notice of an expected 5 minutes delay at Lyon - they knew we were getting off there. At the station we joined our coach which took us to visit Pérouges - l'un des plus beaux villages de France. It was delightful to walk around and explore, and to have lunch at a small restaurant in its delightful setting. It was sunny but quite cool. After lunch we drove some distance to visit the beaujolais winery ... read more

Lyon is one of those cities that some rate as the best in France. It did deserve more time than we allocated this time through. That wasn't really a slight on Lyon but more an indication that our key priority was to get some laundry done, then have a look around and move on to Marseilles before we had to fly home. Our being able to enter into the discussion of whether it is the best in France will have to wait until we have had a look at the rest. The three km walk carrying and towing luggage to our accommodation in Lyon wasn't the ideal introduction to the city. It wasn't that far but, by the end, we were starting to wonder whether we should have given the idea of getting a bit of ... read more

Day 6 This was an unplanned day as we had not signed up for any of the special tours. We discovered that hundreds of years ago Lyon was the center of the silk trade. Catherine found a silk scarf shop yesterday when we were on tour but knew that there is a silk weaving shop in Vieux Lyon that has been there for hundreds of years. These merchants came on board yesterday and gave a silk dying demonstration but we missed it because we were in Perouges. We decided that we would hoof it back to Vieux Lyon and see if we could find the shop among the many twisting and turning streets in the old town. We were able to retrace our steps we took on the tour yesterday to the center of town, then ... read more

Day 5 We wake on the riverboat and get ready for our first breakfast on board. One of my many guilty pleasures is there's bacon here. It's at the buffet station and you can have as much as you wish and this is where I'll eat that smoky, crispy bacon for seven straight days in a row. We've decided that Adrian will be our waiter for the entire trip. The boat has open seating for every meal so we need to be sure we are not late and go directly to one of Adrian's stations. After breakfast we go downstairs to prepare for the first of many walking tours we will take on this river Cruise. We checked the weather in Lyon today and there's a 40% chance it will rain and the sky has dark ... read more

Beautiful Lyon ... But I also got a chance to visit Valrhona's chocolate city (Cite du Chocolat), or museum in Tain-l'Hermitage! This the best organized chocolate museum I've been to (and I've been to Brussels, etc.) with lots of information, interactive tools (smell, look, learn, etc.), but also lots of chocolate to taste, yum! Highly recommend it, if you love chocolate, and the restaurant and the store are great as well.... read more

Well I don't know what to say except.............France continues to pull at our heartstrings and beckons us to return to her charming towns and cities..... On September 1st we begin yet another adventure. On this journey we are traveling with our friends Catherine and Terry and will begin this trip in Paris France, which I am sure comes as no surprise to anyone. We are so excited to show our friends the Paris we know and love and have already planned walking tours of Montmartre, Luxembourg Park and a visit to Musee D'Orsay to name a few. Reservations have also have been made at Chez Andre and La Grande Colbert for two of our three dinners. We will then take a train to Lyon, the gastronomic capital of France where we will explore the wonders of ... read more

We decided to take advantage of the masses of local wine regions and after some discussions with Lyon wine shop owners, we settled on Chambery, and then over to the Côte-Rôtie in the afternoon. We also needed to get some more Lunch food, so researched a market in Chambery. After finishing at the market and getting to the desired local winery, we find that the French Lunchtime has stalled our plans again and so the executives (Rose and Clarke) decide to go to Côte-Rôtie and book in at Domaine Geroge Vernay for a tasting. This was exactly what we expected and tried three lovely whites and three awesome reds. It was now 3PM and all of the lunch restaurants have finished and so we found the boulangerie, picked up a couple of baguettes and headed for ... read more

It is a big day today - yes the long planned arrival of Clarke to join our travels for 9 days. After our issues with driving in the heart of Lyon yesterday and all the streets that the GPS say you can drive down but in realty you can't, it was discussed (Rose said) that we would take the underground to the main train station to pick up Clarke. How hard could this be, we worked out what train line we need, how many stops to go, what train to change to etc just would have paid to make sure we purchased the correct ticket (we still have 3 unused Night Train Tickets for Lyon if any one is in need of them). The tickets wouldn't validate on the gates and even the locals didn't know ... read more

Today we move to Lyon and preparation for the arrival of Clarke (our niece), the original plan was to not stop, but continue to Lyon, however half way through the trip, we need to change Motorways at Clermont-Ferrand so Rose got on the interweb and looked up what attractions were in town. Much to my delight her research revealed that the Michelin Museum (L'Aventure) was here, so we decided (she conceded) to go! What a great time we had looking at the historical cars and researching the Michelin Star program. There are some nice photos of the standout cars including an extend Citroen DS called "the crawler" and used for testing and developing truck tyres and the Micheline trains with inflated tyres instead of steel wheels. Once back on the road we came across the town ... read more
