well!!!!! we left switzerland... caved into our LAST mcdonalds meal.. haha we swear! man.. we had to get rid of our swiss franc, and we only had like.. 10 left so it was pointless to exchange.. haha but our mcdonalds cost 10 franc! thats 10 canadian dollars.. barf much.... Kat and I caught a night train here to France, and it was halarious! I felt like i was in a concentration camp. We were in a room the size of a tiny bathroom with 6 tiny couchette beds in them, haha We could not stop laughing at how ridiculously small of an area we had to share with four other people. But at least we had a place to sleep on the train, rather than trying to get comfortable of a reclining chair. We arrived in ... read more

HEY Brittany and i arrived in nice yesterday morning, and we were compleeeetely blown away. its soooo beautiful here, and i usually say that about all countries weve been to but nice is sooo pretty here. the only thing that were kind of bummed about are the rocky beaches. oh well. yesterday we met to french canadians and we hung out with them on the beach and watched the huuuuuge planes take off from the airport thats just off of the port. then we went to a cute little cafe where we had crepes and expresso. we plan to take a day trip to monacco soon, but the weather here kind of sucks, so brita nd i are going to la fayette and h and m. we got our laundry done today and it honestly felt ... read more

So I left Italy for my big six week adventure through Europe. I started this excursion with a few relaxing days on the French Riviera. This was also my first couchsurfing experience (www.couchsurfing.com). Hey everybody let me start by commenting on how difficult it is to type on a French keyboard! Anyways, Nice was beautiful, after surviving the train ride over which left Florence at midnight and arrived in Nice at 9:45... glad Im finally out of italy, within the last 4 hrs there, 2 italian men tried to kiss me, wait lets make that 3, i forgot to include my italian brother, aaaah! I need a break from Italy big time! i did a lot of relaxing in Nice... two days of beach... met up with a french boy i met during the last trip to ... read more

My plans to take the train to La Spezia and the Cinque Terre in Italy were foiled this morning by the ever so politely striking Italian Transportation workers. They decided that they would go on strike for the day. I think maybe the weather is nice over there and they wanted to have a family day or something. Maybe they are getting ready for tomorrow. What is tomorrow? Oh just another day but you never know. The point is...or really that's just it...there is no point...they're on strike and that means I spent the day sleeping. Apparently I was really tired because it's 3pm and aside from going to the train station and back I've done nothing but sleep. Oh, and I'm back at the St. Exupery Hostel in case you were wondering if I took ... read more

Happy Cinqo de Mayo? (How do you spell cinqo? What language is it? What country am I in? My brain is exhausted with all these languages.) What I learned today: 1. Crepes and ice cream IS an okay lunch and doesn't HAVE to be for dessert. 2. In France emergency exit signs are green, not red. This makes much more sense since you want to GO out of the burning building and red might not be seen in the case of a fire. 3. The sun can still burn you pretty quickly when you're not at 5000 feet. Just because you're in the French Riviera doesn't mean you are immune. 4. If you have a sore spot from you sandals don't forget to wear a bandaid the next day. 5. It's a really great idea to ... read more

I finally got my act together and I believe I have arrived..my vacation has started. I observed Rule #1, #2, #3, #4 AND #5 today and by gawd I had a wonderful day. Okay except for the exchange at the supermarket but I'll get to that later. I always do things in cronological order, or at least I try to. It's part of the OCD behavior I own at times. I had planned to get up early this morning but due to messing around with computers, taking a shower, and I seriously have no idea what else, I didn't get to bed until almost 2. The evenings here fly by. It's already past 10:30 and I haven't even started to try to upload pictures and take a shower. Now for those of you who are thinking ... read more

A quick note: I'm going to post more pictures in a gallery on this site when I can. The computers here at the hostel are impossible to work with in terms of posting pictures. Okay, so before I tell you about my day I'm going to establish a few rules of traveling. Many are rules you and I have heard before but some I have made up in the last few days. First the rules and then I will try to explain just a little. Rule #1: When in doubt, go WITHOUT! Rule #2: Always eat when there's food in front of you. Rule #3: Take your water bottle everywhere...with water in it, nothing is free. Rule #4: ALWAYS pee everytime you have the chance to do it for free. Rule #5: Never forget rule #1. ... read more

Whew..it's great to be done with Paris. I guess it just wasn't my place. I don't know if it was the weather, the fact that everything was closed for two days, or I just simply don't like the place but whatever it was I couldn't wait to move on. I caught a train to Nice this morning with one of the kids at the hostel in Paris. He is on his way to Italy and stayed at the hostel I am at last week and is passing through Nice tonight. I had been really ready to get away from the other hostel kids but I'm glad he was around afterall. I NEVER would have found this hostel. It's way up on a hill away from the center of town and is an AMAZING place. I'll take ... read more

Nice was a relaxing stopover on the crazy European tour. It was a good sized city, and we wandered through the markets and were able to find great pastries everywhere. The real appeal about Nice is its fabulous weather, pristine beaches (albeit pebble beaches) and its beautiful people! We went for a walk up the steep point and got some great views along the coastline. We also went to the nearby towns of Grasse, where they are famouse for making French perfume, and Avignon, with its massive Papal palace where the Catholic Church had to escape to in the 12th century following a revolution in Italy. Both were well worth the visit, as was the lounging around the meditteranean seaside city of Nice.... read more
