Today was one of those days where you just roll with the punches. Our guide on the bus coming in warned us to take the 10:30am train out of Riomaggiore into La Spezia to make sure we make the 12:00 bus pickup. All 17 of us were extremely responsible and got there by 10:15am. You've gotta love Italian scheduling though. The 10:30 train was first delayed by 20 minutes, then 30 minutes, then cancelled. The 11:00am train was then delayed by 30 minutes, 45 mintues, and finally 50 minutes. We actually started calling Busabout to tell them that everyone who was supposed to get on at La Spezia was stuck at the train station. The irony is that the bus apparently had a few stragglers in Pisa (surprise, surprise), and ended up being 40 mintues late, ... read more

Happy fourth of July to all my family and friends on the other half of the world! Unfortunately, I will not be able to blow off any fireworks because A) they don't sell them here and B) there is a thunderstorm tonight and not the best weather for doing just about anything. Kinda sucks. I was at the Cote d'Azur this weekend taking in some much needed sun. I went with two friends to Nice, Monaco and Cannes for the four day weekend. Spent most of the time baking in the sun with the exception of a few hours when we went to see the Matisse Museum which was actually quaint and nice. Spent too much money in one day in Monaco and was glad that it was only a day trip...my friend paid close to ... read more

Hello Everybody, Hope all is well with you all! Today, about 7:30a, we sailed into the port at Villefranche, France. From Mom: This area is the French Riviera, also known as the Cote d'Azure (Blue Coast). Monte Carlo is the most beautiful region I have ever seen. As I'm typing this for Michael, it is 9:21p, the sun is setting (it sets late here) and the lights are twinkling on the cliffs, no words for it! First we went to Nice and spent a little while there. It was pretty in Nice and we did some shopping there. I was bored because if we're not buying toys, I don't care for shopping. It was very early when we got to Nice and most of the kids shops were still closed:( After Nice, we drove to Monte ... read more

Well, let's see where I left off... Nice at the hostel Hotel Paradis. Nice is a very cool city. It is a hard city to put into words. It's a mix of French and Italian cultures and I'm assuming that is why they call it the French Riviera. You have all of the traditional french stores and customs but it has that mediterranean flair of Italy. To get here you have to pass thru the Pyrenees mountains and that gives it's own little micro climate. The winters are really mild and in the summer it never gets really hot. I spent most of my time in what is known as "old town." It is literaly that... the oldest part of the town. Apparently until 10-15 yrs ago it was nothing but a trashy slum, but now ... read more

ok. i've got a little bit more time now so going to give you a bit more detail. i'll start from the start of my tour that began on wednesday 6th at 6am. pretty boring morning. everyone was pretty tired, because it was so early so not too much socialising. i met my first friend - arielle (an american girlsat next to her, and have done ever since. we share a room too. anyway, the bus drove us to dover - saw the white cliffs and then jumped on the ferrry. got the ferry over to calais. good calm water, no seasickness for me. yay!! jumped backed on the bus and arrived in paris at about 4pm. we had dinner at our campsite, then went on a night tour of paris. it's the most amazingly beautiful ... read more

Quite a few of the group were having a lay-in this morning, but I was one of the ones who walked to Biot station, where we were to pick up the train to Nice. It was 3 euros to Nice, so Paul got us all our tickets. There were delays on the trains this morning, so we had a bit of a wait and a good chat, but it came along in the end. It was about a 20-minute journey to Nice Ville station. Nice is the largest resort on the Mediterranean coast, and the fifth biggest city in France. However, it has the second busiest airport, only behind Paris. It was founded by the Greeks, and colonized by the Romans. It has long been a big attraction, due to its warm winter climate and its ... read more

Given it was a Bank Holiday weekend (in Aussie terms a long weekend!), Tracy, Sarah and I decided to head off for the weekend. Given the number of budget airines, getting away isn't a problem.....more of a problem is working out where. We decided on Nice....why, I think mostly because its one of those cities in France you actually hear about...you know the French Riviara and all of that. So, Friday afternoon we flew out. I wrangled the opportunty to work out of e Stansted office, using the excuse of needing to get out and see the business. Anywy flew into Nice, couldn't get hold of Sarah and Tracy so ended up getting my own room. Had a chilled out Friday night, though eventually did ind them and we went for a walk along the Promenade. ... read more

After having spent way too much time on a train (literally too long time after having taken the wrong turn and traveled halfways through France in the wrong direction), and having found a nice little hotel, I feel a strong urge to socialize. The little hotel in Nice is nice. Probably not honored with a bunch of stars in any hotel guide. But it's clean, safe, affordable, and there are quite a few fellow budget travelers. My socializing takes the form of sitting outside on the lawn furniture, writing post cards, surrounded by other young vagabonds. But I feel a need to speak, with anyone about anything. Preferably in English. The Americans present are arrogant, and have seemingly no interest whatsoever to speak with anyone who is not American. The group of Aussies show the same ... read more

I’ll avoid the corny line about Nice being a nice place. Too late. To be fair it is very, ugh, nice! Dam, I’ve done it again. I can see how it would be a nice place (there’s three) to go if you were quite old and loaded with cash. It was well out of my league and, despite no longer being in Italy, I felt like a bit of a tramp. Everyone was dressed in designer clothes and all the cars maintained the same rich image. Sports cars everywhere and, unlike those in Paris, they weren’t covered in dents. There was no point in me going into any shops as I would have been thrown out the moment I walked in through the door. The tourist circuit took about half a day, taking in a chateau ... read more
