For some reason I had thought that Pornic was going to be a high-rise apartment sort of seaside resort. Very pleasantly surprised to find I was completely wrong. No sweeping seaside bay here but a fishing port built along a deep river estuary. There was a very good walkway all along the north side of the estuary so we walked along it right to the end where it came out at the yachting marina and a proper little sandy beach. Shame we had not brought swimming things as the sea looked quite inviting. We had lunch at a bar and the brochettes de crevettes were delicious. The walk back into town seemed much shorter than on the way out and we climbed a steep little path to the upper town. As normal for my shopping expectations, ... read more

Campsite = Camping la Boutinardière just south of Pornic My sister, Liz, and I, always agree that France is 5 degrees warmer once south of Nantes. Today this theory holds true once again. Only had a short drive today, further down the coast so set off at a leisurely pace. No choice of route really as we had to get over the massive estuary of the Loire so we took the dramatic bridge at St Nazaire which always impresses us. The day had been very grey up to this point with no breaks in the sky at all. 5 minutes on the other side of the estuary and we started to see blue. Our campsite was just south of Pornic so we decided to drive through the town to have a look at it. Soon had ... read more

So our adventure began with a very very very long day of traveling. We picked up the car in Toulon and decided to get to the Loire Valley to do our castle tours we should drive as far as we could the first day. So we drove for about 8.5 hours with a couple of stops until we got to Tours, France. Rob was pretty happy to be driving on roads at about 130-150kmh. Our little car can go pretty fast... I was happy that it was turquoise like my car back home (a colour Rob for some reason hates...lol). Anyway so we stayed the night in Tours at a cheap hotel (36Euros a night...woohoo) it was a pretty random hotel but it did the trick, then it was up early and off to fit in ... read more

Like everything in life all good things must come to an end. And so it was with our stay in Poitiers. It is almost the end of our European adventure. We are into the last week of our drive and soon we will be saying good bye to our faithful travelling companion, Peugeot 207SW, and not so faithful Miss GPS. But we have a few final paragraphs to add to our French chapter. After leaving Poitiers we headed for Tours and the start of our drive along the Loire River valley towards Orleans. It didn’t take us long to realise that this short trip cannot be covered in a day. The history, the beauty of the countryside and the many interesting villages deserve more than a cursory visit. Tours has a wonderful cathedral that is in ... read more

After last night’s thunderstorm the day is looking clear and the temperature is rising. But before we leave for Angers and the Loire Valley we have one final visit to make – the centre of Rouen. From our reading prior to coming on the trip we discovered that Rouen has a beautiful cathedral that is in the long process of being cleaned and restored. With the car once again packed we drove down the hill to the city centre and found a very handy car park within easy walking distance of the sights we wanted to see. On our way to the cathedral we discovered a part of the city with very old restored buildings similar to the ones we saw yesterday in Gaillon. Again it was difficult to find a right angle anywhere. We wondered ... read more

After a month of following the maps and directions along the Camino de Santiago, today we were on our own as we cycled toward Digoin where we can hook up with the Eurovelo Route 6, which will take us towards Switzerland. Bill had printed out cycling directions for Montbrison from viaMichelin.com, but we ended up making up our own route as we cycled through the Gorge du Loire along the Loire River. This gorge was not as scenic as the Lot Gorges, but it provided plenty of beautiful views. The first 40 kms. from Le Puy to Retournac were easy, flat. Then we climbed and climbed some more above the Loire River. An equal descent into Aurec sur Loire then more climbing, a bit unexpected as we thought the route along the river would be fairly ... read more

Playing catch up in the blogging game is not fun - it's interesting, reminiscing about the past year, but suddenly realizing how much I left out is a bit terrifying. As such, I've decided to put in a few short entries so we can see where I've been and then a longer one about the last few weeks. Let's take it from the top: France. France you see, was part of the summer of absolute craziness. First there was Vancouver, including the CHI Conference and a visit with family and friends. Then there was Brazil, and the crazy printer - there's a video here now by the way, showing the journey and what it resulted in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mEk4A7ETec Okay so that was that, then we went to Copenhagen literally overnight, celebrated father's day by participating in the ... read more

My dearest wonderful Australians, I regret sincerely the time that it has taken me to post this new blog update. Have an awful lot to fill you all in on… we’ll see how I go. Let me start with the thing that seems to take up all of my blog-writing time. Uni. SciencesPo is an amazing place. It is right in the heart of Paris, the area is called Saint Germain des Pres. The tree lined streets are filled with fancy cafes, boutique clothing stores and well-dressed Parisians (not the ideal area for cash-strapped university students I must say) but the atmosphere is intoxicating. 5 minutes walk away from uni are the Luxembourg Gardens, the perfect place to eat lunch with friends and do some quiet reading. My classes are very interesting, I have never had ... read more

We left Paris today for Nantes. The main reason for making the trip was to visit the war grave of Barry's great uncle Noel, from who Barry was given his middle name. Noel was killed there in world war 1. We found the hotel very central and close to the town square. It is a lovely town, much quieter than Paris, which was a relief, and very attractive. We decided to visit the grave the day we arrived in case we didn't have time the next day. We ended up getting a taxi there, asking the driver if he could pick us up in an hour, only to receive a curt "Non". We found the grave without any trouble. It was sad to see that there were four Kiwis buried there so far from home. Noel ... read more

Woke to lovely blue sky again. Actually woke a bit too early in order to Skype Jenny in Melbourne but discovered I had put my hour back instead of forward when working out Australian / French time difference and should have been Skyping at 10am not 8am ! Back to the Tandy for a shower and breakfast first. Then discovered how tricky it is sitting outside in full sunshine trying to see the screen of a laptop. Had a similar problem last night when I was loading the blog in total darkness. Could see the screen but not the keys. Let’s hope that the next campsite has a better arrangement for wifi than this one, where only option is to sit outside, even if it is free. I managed my Skype though and saw my favourite ... read more
