On Sunday, I was to meet up with the other BGSU students at the Nantes train station at 4:15. It was a hell of a day to say the least. Contacting them was impossible and a single mishap would make finding them very, very difficult. My checkout at the apartment I was previously staying at was for 11am. There was that awkward five hour gap where I had nowhere to go and all of my bags. I wasn't exactly sure what to do. I took a chance went to the new apartment complex hoping I could check in early. Boy was I wrong. Sundays are like a holiday in France. No one works, many of the smaller transportation routes do not run. Instead of uncovering bad memories I am just going to say that Sunday was ... read more

For whatever reason, I hate looking like a tourist. I always scolded my mother when she would take out a map and try to find out where we were, or where we were going, it immediately pegged us as tourists (Mom your still my favorite travel bud, don't worry). So being in Nantes by myself, it was a goal to be indiscreet and walk around like a normal citizen of the city. After my first half hour of attempting not to look like a tourist, I had already failed miserably. I walked out of the airport and walked toward the bus stop. It seemed so simple when online, you just hop on a bus, and fifteen minutes later you are downtown. But they didn't tell you there would be 50 options at that particular bus stop. ... read more

The 11th of May 2012 signified a sad day for us as it meant that our UK working visas had come to an end. I would never have guessed when we first moved to London that I would be that upset to leave in two years time; I didn’t even think I would make it to two years. We choose to live in London as most Aussies and Kiwis do for a base for travelling, which of course it was but what we didn’t realise was how much we would love living in the city itself. It was a strange feeling knowing that this time going to the airport we wouldn’t be returning in a few days time. Once we arrived in Amsterdam after a very short plane trip we could start looking forward to what ... read more

My dilema here is where to start as the title says. I will admit that I didn't see ALL of Angers but I have seen some of it, and I've also seen it grow each time I return. I have visited the chateau, which I will admit, doesn't have anything on the other Chateaux de la Loire (which I will cover eventually), I have visited the cathedral, the little bistros, visited la maison d'Adam, walked through les Jardins du mail and a small park by Rue Jean de la Fountaine where I would go do work or just people watch on a Sunday. I have been very intrigued since my days in France of their 'joy de vivre', their easy going lifestyles and just their nonchalent way of going about things. Let's start with le Chateau ... read more

I know bloggers usually blog about the present but I'm just starting this traveling blog now and I'm going to try to recall my travels as far back as 2005. This is kind of a new year's resolution, to start doing something that I love while still having the safety of my job. I have always been someone 'safe'. Staying close to home, which I call Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, which by the way is breath taking in its own right. My last year of university I had decided that I wasn't ready to be 'an adult' and walk into a full time job. I wanted to experience life! I decided to apply to go study aboard, study French of all things, which is my native tongue, but to do it in a foreign country, ... read more

One of the things that studying abroad has taught me is that a lot of things seem like a big deal in the moment, but aren’t in the grand scheme of things. Right now my biggest headache is trying to figure out whether or not I’ll get credit for my classes that I’m taking here. And like most times that I worry about the future, I hear this one sermon from Grace Center in my head telling me to not expect bad things to happen all the time. I keep preparing myself for the inevitable worst where some credits won’t transfer over and I have to drop down to a French minor in order to graduate in May. It would suck, but is it the end of the world? Am I ever, ever going to use ... read more

We checked our guidebook and map and decided to visit the Château de Brézé as it is less than 10 miles away and therefore an easy day trip by scooter. Bit of a drag getting through Saumur to the road out as Saumur is very much a one-way system and all attempts to go directly across to the road we wanted were foiled. Eventually found the D93 and got on our way. When we arrived at the chateau we were both agreed that it was a rather boring ride with little of interest along the way, apart from hoping there were no bicycles out today as we rode part of the way, where the road was quite busy, along the cycle track. There was a coach trip just leaving as we arrived so we thought our ... read more

Tourist day today. This is when our scooter really comes in so useful. A quick check of our map and off we went East along the south side of the Loire for 10 kms and then a right turn up to Fontevraud and L’Abbaye Royale. What an excellent choice for a visit. The guide literature describes it as ‘one of the largest monastic cities from the Middle Ages’ and it is certainly much more than one would expect to find in a normal abbey or chateau. It was founded in 1101 as a community of religious men and women to became a monastic city consisting of 4 priories, 3 for the nuns and another for the men. It enjoyed royal protection throughout its history and Eleanor of Aquitaine, husband Henry ll of England, and their son, ... read more

Really heavy rain in the night pounding on the roof and everything soaking wet when we got up, wearily, after quite a disturbed sleep. Decided that there was not a lot we could do if we stayed where we were as too wet to enjoy the country park aspect of the campsite so we packed up and left. Sunday is always a good day for driving with the truck free roads so a good decision to move on today. We took a simple route, bypassing motorways but keeping to the main road, straight up country via Poitiers. Past field after field of cows and crops. This is a good time of year to admire this agricultural area of France when half the crops are harvested and the fields are being ploughed ready for more. It all ... read more

I would have written in this sooner, but we haven’t actually had a bit of internet the entire time we’ve been here. Some friends and I even tried to steal internet from McDonalds yesterday and were thwarted by the Gods of the Wifi world. It’s really interesting not having internet, and I kind of feel like this is the one really crucial time when we’d actually need it. The first week, that is, when we’re still meeting people and trying to make plans, do things, and just stay out of your own room at all costs in fear of actually missing home way too much. So far, so good. Until now that is, but so far, I feel fine! Other than the first day here, I wouldn’t actually call anything that we’ve done bad. I’ve had ... read more
