So, we got back to Bayeux around 3 in the afternoon and we stopped at a megastore called Eleclerk (or something similar). The store was like a cross between a walmart and a costco, and we grabbed tickets to the Ben Harper concert that evening in Caen. After getting the tickets and some food we took the car back the rental place. I went inside to discuss the window and pay. As it turns out, the guy just kind of shrugged when I showed him the window, and they didn't charge me, and there was no argument. So, about 15 minutes later, we walked next door to the train station and hopped a train to Caen. When we got to Caen, we set out to find a place to stay. There's no hostel in Caen, so ... read more

Ok, now that this entry is almost a full month behind, I figured I would try and get caught up a bit. Leaving Paris was interesting. I got to the train station a full 2 hours before the train was due to leave in order to wait in line to make a reservation. After an hour in line I discovered that I didn't need a reservation on this particular train. Fun. So, I sat around waiting for the departure board to update and tell me which platform the train was leaving from. There were tons of people milling around in front of the board, and now in retrospect I know why. When the board finally did update, it was only 15 minutes before our train was due to leave, and several trains at once were updated. ... read more

Well, with my first (and only) trip into western France, my wife Erin and her parents (Pops and Mama Gundersen) and myself drove the 6.5 hours (for some reason, our return trip took almost double this) from western Germany to the French town of Bayeux in Normandy. The town was a beautiful, quaint little town that had plenty of good eateries where one could get tripes (among other things) and raw goat cheese (Pops would later experience its full wrafth the morning after eating it). Pops and I had a wonderful time passing the bottle of local Calvados back and forth. It was a wonderful few days, and Normandy is very beautiful. I apologize for not really expanding in depth on all of the WWII sights that we saw...it basically would take me a few pages ... read more

The ferry arrived in Le Havre on time at 7:30-am French time and soon I was on my way down the ramp out of the ferry and exiting the ferry terminal. I had already programmed the Sat Nav to the French map and set the time zone and my first destination, Honfleur. The road out of the terminal was quiet busy as a set of traffic lights near the terminal kept holding up the queue. After filtering through the traffic and getting a little closer to the front of the queue, I chatted to a couple of the bikers that I’d met on the ferry before getting a green light and turning right heading for Honfleur. My route once again kept me away from the French motorway system and I soon found myself heading through an ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Ouistreham September 17th 2006

Departing Honfleur, I headed west along the D513 coast road towards my final destination for the day. I followed the coast road passing through Villerville and on to Trouville Sur Mer (on Sea) then Deauville, Villers sur Mer, Houlgate, Cabourg, and finally towards Ouistreham when I recognized a landmark that I’d only seen in films or documentaries. As I approached Ouistreham I recognized the Pegasus Bridge in front of me and the Pegasus bridge memorial with the old bridge was towards my right hand side. I had planned to visit the Pegasus Bridge at sometime during my tour of Normandy but I hadn’t planned a specific time or date for the visit. Just before the new bridge was a turning to the right which took me to the memorial site and museum. Pulling into the car ... read more

As I approached Arromanches les Bains my first sight was the 360-degree cinema which was on top of the hill overlooking Arromanches and gold beach as it was named at the time of the D-Day landings on the 6th June 1944. I'd visited the cinema a few years earlier so I decided not to waste the lovely weather but continue into the town center. I rode down to the car park by the museum and pulled up at the barrier where the attendant said something to me and once again I didn't understand a word until I told him I was English. He then explained it was free parking for bikes providing I parked in the areas painted yellow. These areas weren't specific areas bike parking spaces just areas which were too small for a car ... read more

Okay, after only a little sleep for Kate, we packed up the hotel, and made our way to the campervan place. Mum and dad got the laydown of what to do with the van, and I got the job of finding out how and where we actually had to go to meet Alana, Jules and his dad. Mum had made me chief navigator, as mum was a little nervous after a bad experience driving in Italy - she needed a rest and her nails did as well. After packing the van with our goods, loaded up with only a buddha bar CD and some crazy french music Mum had insisted on buying (I am sure it will suit some people - just not me really) we made our way out of Paris - first hurdle - ... read more

Venice - Milan - Geneva - Lyon - Paris - Laval (Train) 23 July The French will carry their baguettes with such abandon. They will buy their one metre long stick of baked fresh bread on their way home from work. You will see it tucked under the arm of a commuter like an umbrella on a wet day; and at the ready to beat off the competition for that seat on the train. Or you might spot them precariously balanced in the backpack of a cyclist where it will smite any insects unlucky enough to be in the path of the baguette as it swathes through the air behind the rider. The stick can hold open the door allowing one to load shopping bags inside and then keep out the draught from under that door ... read more

Oh my I can't even remember all that happened in the past few days. I know a few days ago Mélanie, Garance's sister, took me around and I got to see Montmartre and the Sacre Coeur, L'arc du triomphe and the Champs-Elysées. We had a good time chatting and walking around. It was very quite and peaceful despite the many tourists. Having a French person really helps me feel like I'm on the inside instead of just watching the façade of Paris race by me. We had icecream which everyone seems to be having everyday because it is so darn hottttttttt here. Anywho, that night we started Gone With the Wind, Garance, Mélanie, and I before we all became really tired and called it a night. The next day I went with Garance to the dentist ... read more
