Well as most of you know I have a problem with clothing, as in I have too much, so packing was rather difficult. Finally, after many purges, I managed to pack two overly stuffed bags and one carry on. I still don't think I packed enough, but Jerome thinks it's too much and perhaps he is right...he was nice enough to help carry it with me. So I left at 1:30pm from the Nashville airport and flew to Chicago where I had a two hour lay over. Then I boarded the plane to La France! The flight was awful because I developed bronchitis somewhere between Nashville and Chicago so I suffered the whole flight and could barely breathe. Luckily some good samaritans offered me some various medications to aid in my tribulation. So I arrived ... read more

After saying goodbye to half of our California friends in Lisbon, Lindsay and I left for Paris. It was my first time in Paris and Lindsay hadn’t been there since her freshman year of college (before we even started dating, 8 years ago, wow). We stayed at a nice hotel called Grand Hotel Leveque about a 20 minute walk away from the Eiffel Tower, which was nice because we were right in the center of all of the major sights. The street our hotel was on was pedestrian only and made up of a mix of small grocery stores, restaurants, and cafes, so it was perfect for us. I think next time we go back we’ll probably stay there again. During our last trip to France in February, one of the highlights was food. I ... read more

Isques On Tuesday, we drove from Paris to Isques (a village near Boulogne sur Mer). Our GPS isn’t working as it should—it shows where we are, but doesn’t tell us where to go. When we try to program an address it tells us that there are no roads in that area; then it tells us what road we’re on, the road coming up, etc. It’s helpful but not what we hoped for. The cousin of the landlord looks after this place for him, and she told us everything about it. She kept me busy while Kevin unpacked everything—not a bad deal. There’s a picture of our living room (#1), a picture of our backyard (#2) and a picture of our rental car and the house. (#3). I asked Isabelle how old the house was, and ... read more

Monday we took another trip to the Pig park; this time one of the mama pigs had had babies! They were so cute. Just as amusing and entertaining as the baby pigs was watching Gerald, the pig park ranger, interacting with the mama pig and her babies. It is incredible how comfortable he is with the pigs, and vice versa. There are significantly fewer pigs in the park now than there was when I first visited the park five weeks ago. They have been slowly selling the pigs to other parks, and selling some to people to be consumed. There are only about a dozen or so pigs left in the park, and soon the park will close because of the owner of the land does not want the pigs there anymore. Gerald is obviously ... read more

The Cliffs of Etretat Europe » France » Normandy By ViliusApril 19th 2007Will GordonThursday the 19th was my birthday!! Armed with a GPS as our guide, we hopped in my Pink Fiat and headed for the coast, the Cliffs of Etretat being our destination. Etretat is a small tourist town on the coast of Haute Normandie that is flanked by strikingly beautiful cliffs on each side. It was the most beautiful place I have been in France thus far. We ended the day in Deauville, a coastal town an hour or so south of Etretat. Here are some pics of Etretat and Deauville. ... read more

Our 61/2 week expedition to Portugal started when we left Birmingham at 7.40 and had a smooth trip to Dover to catch the Sea France ferry to Calais. We chose this route to France not because it was necessarily the most convenient but by far the cheapest, £85 return for the campervan and us. It was the first time we had crossed the channel by ferry since the tunnel was available and found it very relaxing, although the sea was calm! There followed an afternoon’s driving on the French motorways. The Morello performed very well maintaining the speed limit of 130km/hour most of the time although I did have to change down on some of the hills. We spent the night 30 km south west of Rouen on an excellent campsite outside a typical Brittany village ... read more

Since the English pound was killing our feeble attempt at a budget we decided to get out of England as quickly as possible. We looked at several options but the cheapest and easiest way was by bus from London to either Calais or straight into Paris. We have decided to rent a car rather than purchase a Eurail pass because of the remote sites we wish to see in such a short time. The cost of the car is less than the 15 day train ticket for two people even if we spend fifty dollars a day on gas. The bus left London at 8:00 p.m. and was due to arrive in Paris between six and seven the next morning. Since we had taken several overnight buses in South America we felt confident we could ... read more

Wow. I just finished four of the most fun days of my life living waaaay above my general social class and income bracket thanks to the intense generosity of friends from highschool and their subsequent, equally kind, connections. I'm talking, of course, of my time in the ski resort village of Meribel. Not sure what Meribel is? Let me give you an intro: it's in the center of 3, interconnected, skiable valleys containing the biggest area of skiiable terrian in the world, it boasts 190 lifts, has FOUR Club Meds, was home to the alpine events of the 1992 Winter Olypics, and is currently home to Lindsay, Vicky, and Helen who are 2003 grads of Mount Doug Sr. Secondary in Victoria and amazing hostesses! I really don't know where to start, so I guess I'll ... read more

This past Sunday the “Cultures Connections” club, which organizes trips and events for international students to explore France and learn more about French culture planned a day trip to “Le Mont St. Michel.” Mont St. Michel is a small “island” off of the coast of Normandy (about a three-hour bus ride from Rouen/Mt. Saint Aignon), yet borders the province of Brittany and was at one time considered to be a part of Brittany. I put “island” in quotes because it is only completely surrounded by water at high tide. When we arrived it was surrounded mostly by land but the tide slowly came in and we had to leave by a certain time so that our bus wouldn’t be submerged! We learned that Mont St. Michel is the third most visited tourist destination in France, ... read more
