Panicked I still have to update with my trips this past weekend to Dieppe and Mont St. Michel, but something has come up and I feel like I have to share it... I'm currently faced with the possibility of having to travel alone for a month at the end of my trip. Anyone who knows me knows this is not something I want to have to do. But it's either that, or leave Europe a month earlier than I thought, and for-go my $900 Eurail pass - on top of me being very unhappy for a month or more for missing out. I'm just a little lost right now and don't really know how else to express it but go back to something I know: writing. I won't get into details because it's not important, but ... read more

I Skated! This is for those (i.e. my mom) who needed proof that I skated last night. I did! I skated for two hours! And I didn't hate it! And I didn't fall! I improved quite a lot from being a bit scared to get on the ice to being able to go pretty fast. Then I realized that I can stop much the same as I can on skis, and things were good. And for the rest of the time, I pretended that I was on skis. It worked pretty well as skiing comes naturally to me. I didn't attempt any cross-overs (as Alison did), jumps (as the actual skaters did in the middle of the ice), or going backwards (once again as Alison did) - but I skated without falling. I had great skates ... read more

My Life as a Photographer My lazy weekend didn't end up quite as lazy as my Friday had been. Alison and I decided to take a walking tour of Mt. St. Aignan on our own on Sunday (January 29), and discovered some hidden treasures and beautiful scenery just a bit off the beaten path... I have many pictures in this entry. You have been warned. ... read more

I Have (been to) Le Havre I figure I should recount my weekend adventures to Le Havre and also my stint as a photographer around Mt. St. Aignan. On Saturday (January 28), I met up with Andrea, Allison and Alison (same name, different spelling), and we decided to make our way to the Rouen train station to see what trains were going to the coast that day. Low and behold, there was one to Le Havre, and one to Dieppe. Considering it was already 12pm, we figured Dieppe would have warranted more than a few hours of wandering time. So we chose Le Havre, although none of us knew exactly what was to be found in the city. After about a 45 min train ride, we were in Le Havre (6 euro ticket). It was currently ... read more

Ed: A couple of months back, Mon suggested we should hire a car and take a weekend trip up to France. It’s taking us more than 3 months to finally get a weekend where we were all available (what with our travels, Mon & Chris getting married, and Bec and Ben organising their Christmas dinner and their other thousand commitments!)… But last weekend we finally were able to go on our adventure. Matt volunteered to hire the car (as KPMG has a contract with Avis for cheap deals), and Mon was in charge of looking into places that were must see in and around Calais, and I would book the ferry between Dover and Calais… I’m not sure what role Bec had… I think it was to make sure she was just available for the weekend ... read more

Well, we'll see how well this site works for me. I was recommended it by Kara, so I hope everything works alright for me. First off, I better say a little something about myself. I'm 19, second year in college, from Grand Rapids, MI and very happy to be out of the United States. I have been here in France three weeks. I am living in a dormitory in Ango in Mont Saint Aignan, which is about a ten minute bus ride north of Rouen. So far, my travels have taken me to Paris and Le Havre on the English Channel. My trip to Paris with the other kids from my school was intense, visiting a bunch of the tourist spots all in one day. I better state my first impressions of France before I ... read more

A Lazy Weekend As the title states, I'm in for a bit of a lazy weekend. No travel plans as I plan to just hang out in the town. Today, I woke up at 12:30pm (always a blessing when having to wake up at 7:45am every morning), and walked down to mail some postcards. From there, I walked across the street to Place Colbert (a little 'shopping centre' of sorts - mostly consisting of boulangerie, banks, a cinema, and a market that seems to not be open in the past 3 days) to pay for a bus pass (since I've almost used up my 10 trips I had paid for before). 5.90 Euros later, I was off to the pastry shop to get a 'Pain au Chocolat' - what has to be a magnificent French pastry ... read more

Paris Tomorrow :) This will be short because our train leaves at 8:45am and we're leaving Mt. St. Aignan at 7:45 to make sure we're at the train station in Rouen by that time. I'm getting a discount card that will get my half priced tickets, so that should be good. It'll be 9 E instead of 18!! Tomorrow's line up is: Saturday: *Eiffel Tower *Dali Museum *Picasso Museum *Pere Lachaise Cemetery Sunday: *The Paris Catacombs *The Louvre That is all :) I figure I'll be back in Paris quite often since it's only an hour train ride, isn't too expensive, and it's PARIS! There's SO much to do, but I have to do it in stages if I want to get the most out of the city. Anyway, here's some more pictures to tide you ... read more

On Break... As the heading says, I'm on my break from class. I had a 9am class until 12pm and then I have another one at 2 until 4. It's like that for Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays - with Wednesdays and Fridays off. Wednesdays will be my laundry and big market day (as in, when I will plan to go, but not necessarily only when I will go due to my tiny fridge and cupboard space) ... I'm starting to plan my extravaganzas (i.e. trips!) around Europe. The weekend coming up, an American friend (Erin) and I are going to Paris for the day to do some museums. Definitely excited. And then, she and I, and her suitemate, Hannah, are starting to plan to our England/Ireland/maybe Scotland trip for our February break. England and Ireland are ... read more

I arrived in Rouen last Thursday, January 5th, after a long flight and taxi ride to the city. The French students welcomed us warmly and helped us get situated in our new residences. Our rooms are small, but once I unpacked I felt a lot more at home. My first weekend here was very enjoyable, but frusturating at times. I can tell that the language barriers will cause some difficulties for me. A group of us went out for a nice dinner on Saturday evening. Sunday there wasn't much to do. I have been reading in my free time and studying common French phrases. I am looking forward to the French intensive courses that begin on Thursday. Emily, the other girl from MSU, and I have gone running three times so far. I am glad that ... read more
