I posted some photos on FB. I had Centre Court tickets, as well as freedom to roam the grounds, much like Wimbledon and the US Open. Most tennis fans know that the French Open in Paris is played on clay courts. In fact, it is the only remaining Grand Slam event played on clay. Wimbledon in London is played on grass, while the Australian and US Open are played on hard courts. And it is my least favorite of the Grand Slam tennis events. I have been to both the US Open in Flushing Meadows, NY as well as Wimbledon, which I consider one of the three or four best sporting events in the world. Why not the French Open? Among many reasons, it is held in Paris, not one of my favorite cities. I do ... read more

While hardly an expert on a city that I have a rather checkered past, staying out in a neighborhood is great!!! Very few tourists, mostly locals and working folks. No, we are not celebrating a 16th birthday. Maybe some multiple of 16. I am referring to the 16th Arrondissement (of twenty) of Paris. There are twenty in Paris, for those of you unfamiliar. The 16th includes the Arch de Triomphe, and several well-known museums. But as you are aware, I am not here for the museums. I have only one reason for being here, the famous French Open. The 16th is rather a high rent area or one of high society's favorite places, comparable to Chelsea and Kensington in London, or Charlottenburg in Berlin. It has the third highest income following the 3rd, and Neuilly-Sur-Seine, both ... read more

Perhaps I fooled you? You may think I am talking about the Grand Slam of Golf or a Bridge tournament. Yes, I have been to several U.S. Opens, as well as the Masters. But I have not been to the British Open (though I played at Carnoustie just a week after van de Velde imploded) and have played many courses used by the PGA tournament (Kohler, Pinehurst, Harding). I am referring to tennis this time. I have attended Wimbledon (7 days of tennis), and the U.S. Open at Flushing. I am heading out to Stade Roland Garros in Paris for my third leg of the Slam. And you know that Paris is one of my least favorite places in the world. Yet, I trudge onward and upward. The French Open began in 1891 and was originally ... read more

Definitely not one of my favorite cities, Paris is nonetheless in the hearts and minds of many of you. Perhaps my reluctance to embrace this city started in the 70s, when France and Paris specifically, were very anti-American due to the deGaulle years. Yes, it has become infinitely better over the years, though I find a kindler, gentler France when I head out to the countryside. Places like Loire, Bordeaux, and Champagne are certainly more welcoming than Paris. So, why not take a rather irreverent look at the City of Lights? Over 9 million people visit the Louvre annually, making it the most popular museum in the world. Only 35,000 pieces are on display, though their collection numbers over 460,000. If you allowed 30 seconds to view each piece, your visit would last 35 days! The ... read more

First of all, let me apologize for the delay in my blogs. Between the intial rush, and trying to do everything we wanted to in Paris, then the train trip to Saint Jean Pied de Port, and the fact that our first night on the Camino was at Refuge Orisson which does not have WiFi.... Since I'd fallen asleep so early, at 2am I couldn't keep my eyes closed I got up and went downstairs to the patio to work on the blog and photos for a while. After about an hour, I was bored, so I returned to bed thinking just to lay there, but I fell back to sleep. At around 6:30, Manoli got up, so so did I. We took showers, changed clothes, transferred the stuff from the suitcases into the two cardboard ... read more

This post is a little different. Instead of writing for a general audience, here is an email I wrote to ma mere while traveling solo to Paris back in late Spring 2018. ------ Hi Mom :) I know you don't follow my Instagram, so I figured I'd write a little blog-type post for you instead - You told me to 'make good choices' - gurl. I just had the loveliest of all meals. Less than 5 minutes away from my Airbnb is a seafood tapas restaurant called Le Jourdain (after the Metro station, I think). I can just imagine all the 'so-good-you-make-a-grossed-out-noise' noises you would make - you would LOVE it there! I went in around 8:30/9pm and sat at the little corner bar area (like at home :)) and people-watched the French eating their dinner. ... read more

Second email I wrote to my family while vacationing solo in Paris back in Spring 2018. ----- Bonjour again! Je suis très désolée for not writing yesterday, but I was absolutely pooped. Started the day (since I skipped the morning snoozin' til 10AM - oops!) having a pique-nique dejeuner on the Esplanade des Invalides. Bought a French Vogue magazine, which came with a free lipstick(!), and ate a lil baguette sammich. Speaking of sammich, I've only seen a few performers on the Metro, but the one I saw Friday morning was out of control. I saw him from a distance in his bedazzled tankini and Britney Spears-era headset mic, practicing his moves in the reflection of the Jourdain Metro station snack machine. Luckily he got on my train, but performed behind where I was sitting. I ... read more

Charles DeGalle Airport is quite huge. I believe there are 3 main terminals and each of those has ... sub-terminals. After whooshing thru customs, except for the slight delay by my wife showing her expired Spanish passport, we went out to get our luggage and then look for the Roissy Bus. The Roissy Bus runs from the airport to L'Opera, a main square in Paris. Since the airport is quite a ways outside of Paris, a taxi is pretty expensive, and even the Roissy Bus cost 13.70 Euros, one way. After a short wait, the bus showed up and we were on our way. I had already found out how to get to the hostel, since I'd asked them in an email, but I let myself get convinced to try a different way when I told ... read more

According to the World Tourist Organization (UNWTO), international tourist arrivals fell by 72 percent between Jan. and Oct. of 2020, but things are slowly but surely picking back up to where it was before the pandemic. As people begin to feel more comfortable with flying and exploring once again, eager travelers are starting to flock to all the top travel destinations across the world. But which countries are the most popular to visit? Here is what Travelicious says. Number 5: Italy Start with the number five spot in Europe: They've got pizza, they've got gelato, they've got a whole lot of visitors. Italy's international tourist numbers reached almost 64.5 million people just in 2019. Aside from the food, Italy has amazing things to do including but not limited to visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa, ta ... read more
