Today started out early.....first at 3:00 (I set my alarm wrong), then at 4:30 (we had to get to the Eurostar early for security, passport, and boarding. We had been to the terminal last night and saw the crowds and long lines. A policeman said to be there no later than 5:30 (7:01 departure time), so that's what we did. We hated to leave our cute hotel room, but off we went dragging our luggage, or at least part of it, to the train station. This station was beautiful inside and out. We were shocked to find that there weren't as many people as we thought since ours was only the 2nd train of the day. We got through security with no problem. Passport control was really just a stamp your passport and go situation. We ... read more

Ah, Paris, incredible traffic, intolerable crowds, high prices, and people who rush for no one. We spent the last two days in Paris on our own, so we got a real feel for this incredible city. You Americans who are used to a certain pace of life, well, that is not going to happen in Europe. It is SLOW here, and that is the way it will be. The locals will not change their pace for you. Period. If you are in a rush, you need to take a step back and relax. Trying to push them will only result in frustration for all. First thing we learned was the subway system. If you plan to spend anytime on your own before or after a tour, you must master the public transportation: bus, subway, and trams. ... read more

From Statista: The world-famous cycling competition, the Tour de France, kicks off next week, running from July 1 - July 24. It’s touted as one of the biggest sporting events in the world, and according to statistics by Médiamétrie, attracted a television audience of 150 million viewers across Europe in 2021. But how popular is it on a country-by-country basis? Data from Statista’s Global Consumer Survey shows that one stereotype does hold true: the Dutch do really love their bikes. According to data of selected countries collected between April 2021and March 2022, the Netherlands had the greatest share of competitive cycling fans out of the selected European countries, with 29 percent of its sports fans saying they f... read more

Our first full day in Paris began with a bus tour of all the major sights of the City of Light. We visited Norte Dame whose fire in 2019 nearly destroyed this historic landmark. The church is under reconstruction and, as such, you can't get near the edifice. We were only able to view the building from a distance. The Mayor of Paris wants construction complete by 2024, the year of the Paris Olympics, which is unlikely. It will be more like 2030 if they are lucky. The Grand Dame will survive but she will need time to heal. We toured the city in comfort and visited the Eiffel Tower. (Cathy and I have tickets to go to the top tomorrow), the Luxor Obelisk, a gift from Egypt, and the former site of the Guillotine where, during ... read more

SUN, 26 JUN 2022 – “Day 2: PARIS - Free time this morning followed by guided sightseeing that features the Arc de Triomphe, les Champs-Elysées, and a visit to the Courtyard of Les Invalides. This evening, enjoy dinner and cabaret at the famous Lido. (B,D)” Uncle Larry’s note: The Eiffel Tower is cool, but photographs are able to do it justice. The Palace of Versailles and the Moulin Rouge, on the other hand, are must-sees while in Paris. Photographs cannot do justice to the Palace while photographs are not allowed during the show at the Moulin Rouge. Before and after dinner, a band entertained us. Of course, I took advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity and cut the rug with one of my travelling companions. At the latter, there were the anticipated dancers but ... read more

Since I would have a few days in Paris after the tour of France; since most of the tour providers do not identify which hotel will be used for the pre-tour and post-tour accommodation; and since the tour-contracted hotels generally are removed from city center and less costly, I selected a pricy hotel close to the Eiffel Tower for my short two-night pre-tour stay so I could visit that and other nearby attractions before the tour and saved the other attractions for my post-tour stay. THU, 23 JUN 2022 found me catching a taxi to the Barcelona-Sants train station for my 6-hour, 48-minute high-speed ride to Paris, France and the Paris Gare De Lyon train station. This train is a double-decker, but I chose the lower deck when I booked so I wouldn’t have to drag ... read more

I really never have had anything, either specifically nor in general, against France nor its people; however, there never has been anything (other than the World War I & II sites) that has made me pine for a visit. Only recently, since the airing of the Tour de France on television, have I even learned of the existence of the Pyrenees Mountains. Rolling countryside covered with grape arbors has never given my eyeballs an adrenaline rush, pictures of the architecture of eastern Europe have been more intriguing than those I have seen of France, the portions of fine French food I have seen served on TV seemed totally inadequate and “Boone’s Farm” (at a buck a gallon) seemed to accompany blondes and brunettes equally well during my high school years. Given that France has been a ... read more

Today we bid a fond adieu to the Viking IDI and its wonderful crew. This morning at 7 AM we had to have our luggage outside our staterooms ready to be loaded onto the bus for our long day of travel to Paris. It was with mixed emotions enjoyed our final breakfast in the main dining room and said goodbye to Gianny, Yanni, and Belle. They were a pleasure to be with and a delightful addition to the voyage. One very important thing you need to do when preparing to leave the ship. Check, double check, and check one more time that you have everything you came with. There is no turning back. If you left something in the cabin, it is gone! Another important departure procedure is to pack a day bag for the bus ... read more

Day 4: 5th June, 2022; Exploring Paris Rise and shine! First morning in Paris and today we began with an 8am wake up call as we head down to the hotel’s lobby for some breakfast. We had classic French food such as croissants with Nutella, toasted baguette’s and of course, ham and cheese. Following that delicious breakfast, we hopped onto the coach at 9:00am as we drove past the Seine River and saw a glimpse of Notre-Dame and the Efile Tower. As we were dropped off, we were told that we had a full day to ourselves but had to be back on the bus at 4:15pm in Concrode, Paris. We hopped out of the bus and went our separate ways. The boys and I found our way to Place De la Concorde. We noticed there ... read more

Day 3: 4th June, 2022; London to Paris With Contiki It’s Contiki Time!!!!!! If you have been following my blogs so far, you might be wondering why I am travelling to Europe for a month on my own? In this section you will find out why. I have come to Europe to do a Contiki Tour that will take my around Europe for a month. For those that don’t know, Contiki is a group tour operator that provides a range of travel programs to 18-35 year old’s across the world, especially in Europe. The reason why I chose a Contiki was because I wanted to break routine from my normal life back home and would like to travel while young, especially following the lockdowns we had in Australia for the last 2 years. Anyway, a groggy ... read more
