Well, everything in Paris is different, from the keyboards to the language to the absolute beauty of the city!!! I have to say that I have never been to a place like this before. Our flight to Paris started with a 45 min bus to Barcelona Girona Airport, at 3am, ouch, followed by the CRAZIEST Ryan Air flight ever. Everyone was crazy rowdy, it was a definite party plane and the stewardess had to yell at some crazy spaniards. Ryanairs motto is the "On time airline..." Were they ever!!! We were into Paris 20 mins early.. When does that happen? Tired, we also had to ride another bus from Paris Beauvais to Paris Metro... The things you do for cheap flights!!! Anyways, we get into Paris, and its -5°C out here... Nice... The first stop was ... read more

Hey everyone... Well, I survived the Canibus Cup, toured some windmills, had a wonderful time eating cheese and waffles, hung out with some of Baller's colleagues in the red light district, and loved all of Amsterdam. Now I'm settling into Paris. So... Paris is a sexy, alluring, mysterious, and wonderful city. It is so big, it would be impossible to see it all... and I never really have any idea where I am, so I've inadvertently seen some parts over and over and over... But it's a fun city to get lost in. There are so many old, beautiful, gothic buildings crying out with history... everywhere I turn, I'm stumbling upon a grave or a tomb in memory of someone important... a story waiting to be told. How many Napolean's are buried here anyway??? It's incredible ... read more

It has suddenly become cold here in Paris. The seasons here change so differently - literally in one week! France doesn't have a big fall with leaves changing like many parts of the United States. Instead, usually the weather instantly changes from warm days to cold days. I can't complain though - I am still loving in this city. My job challenges me, as I don't think I am made to be a teacher, much less a teacher in a low-income school. I've had some interesting experiences throughout this month. My school is located in La Courneuve, directly in the suburban area afflicted with the riots. To everyone who emailed me: thanks for all your concern. I am going to write about the riots soon. I had a hard time knowing what to say when they ... read more

Paris, "the city of love". It conjours images of wonderful and romantic goings-on... I don't know much about Paris. I went there to get some new climbing shoes and maybe have a bit of a look around. I will outline Paris in a nutshell and give a few key lessons to go with it. My arrival in Paris was a first introduction to an underground transport system. First Lesson: Keep hold of your ticket. If you don't have a ticket to leave at your end station, you may be unlucky enough to receive a 45 Euro fine! (Fortunately, it is a common enough error for first timers and if you go to the 'secret' underground office on Ligne 4 at the Les Halles station, they will happily refund your money...) Out of the underground and into ... read more

Half a day of warfare 15/11/05 - The Invalides Hospital in Paris was originally built at the request of Napoleon to ensure his injured troops were taken care of. On the same site are the Musée l’Armée and the Tomb of Napoleon. The Musée l’Armée consumed most of my day; it has an incredible display of everything to do with warfare, arms, uniforms and armour. You can imagine, it is definitely the kind of museum that I could spend most of my day in, but perhaps not Lorenza (so a few days alone in Paris have a positive side). There was a section dealing with WWII that I found incredibly interesting, mainly because as a resident of the southern hemisphere I know a fair amount about the dealings Australia had with Japan during that war, but ... read more

We got up at our usual time to eat breakfast, then we packed and checked out. It took us a long time to pack, but daylight’s saving time was on our side! We arrived at Disneyland a little bit after the park had opened, and we took Katherine shopping for a princess dress along main street. All week long, we had tried to get her to choose a costume for Halloween, but she hadn’t seemed the least bit interested. This was our last day, so Papa and I were really pushing the dress-up clothes. The shops aren’t very busy in the morning, so it was a nice time to shop. Katherine really got interested when we took her to the dressing room. She immediately fell in love with the Snow White dress. She wouldn’t try on ... read more

Since I've been getting a lot of emails from concerned people, I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm fine in Paris. There have been riots for the past 14 nights in Paris suburbs to the north/ northeast of the city and in several other cities, but there is no danger in Paris itself. In fact, if I hadn't read the newspaper or gotten emails I wouldn't know anything is happening! I live in one of the southwest districts of the city, so I'm nowhere close to the violence. Really the only problems in Paris are along the RER line to the airport, a public transport like the metro. It also seems like everything is dying down a lot since car burnings over the past few nights keep dropping and the Prime Minister has now ... read more

Hello Everyone! I have received several friendly and concerned e-mails asking if I am OK in Paris despite the riots raging throughout France, and I just want to assure everyone that I am fine and that I don’t feel in grave danger here in Paris. So just to ease your minds and fill you in on what is going on I thought I might write something concerning this current event unfolding around me, though I highly suggest going to the news for more exact facts. Firstly, the riots are taking place in many of the « banlieues » or suburbs across France. These suburbs might be comparable to our inner cities in the US, except here in France the poor are forced OUT of the cities and into the suburbs for economic reasons. The riots are ... read more

Well I suppose those of you who read the news deserve some word from this end of the world. I don’t really know what to say. If you really want to understand the underlying psychology and attitudes, I suggest you rent La Haine, or HATE. I’ve seen it in Blockbusters and independent movie stores. I couldn’t believe when I read this in the New York Times: "This is just the beginning," said Moussa Diallo, 22, a tall, unemployed French-African man in Clichy-sous-Bois, the working-class Parisian suburb where the violence started Oct. 27. "It's not going to end until there are two policemen dead." New York Times, Craig S. Smith, published: November 7, 2005 There seems to be a very tit-for-tat mentality that was represented very well in that film. I warn that the film is ... read more
