My my my, what a week this has been. I have been on many adventures and have had some major changes to my agenda! Here goes. Having my guest, dearest Amelia, for the weekend was wonderful! She arrived into my metro station at 12 on Thursday night and the fun began. It was a bit of a squeeze because a friend of hers needed a place to stay so my hard wood floor was the best option for her, bummer! Friday classes ran over so I met them at the Musée d’Orsay and then we ate too much lunch and then bided our time until the Louvre was free for students and went and enjoyed the museum for a few hours. Then came a yummy dinner in my area. Saturday we jumped up to go to ... read more

the Flight Kelley's dad dropped us off at the airport with plenty of times to spare. So while waiting for our plane to board, Kelley went and got some Burger King and I watched the people with the obnoxious child. WE eventually got on our plane, Kelley was kind of spazing out even with all the drugs she took. We landed a little early in Chicago, Jenn came running over worried that we had missed our flight. She thought we had a longer layover than we did. We ended up sitting just behind Jenn on the flight from Chicago to Paris so that was pretty cool. Once again Kelley panicked a little. She is a horrible flyer! The flight, however, was not bad at all. It didn't drag on like the last time I flew to ... read more

Tuesday is a good day. For the first time in the history of my education I regularly have a day off on a designated school day, and today, Tuesday, is that lucky day. So, naturally, that means that I woke up today at about 5 AM. This always happens to me; on days when I have nothing planned to do I always get so excited about the possible things I COULD do that I wake up way to early. Now that I am in Paris and my possibilities for the day are so exciting I have to force myself to sleep longer than 5 AM because that is just a ridiculous hour to wake up when you go to bed regularly at 2 AM. So, today I got up around 9 after some fitful turning about ... read more

As of the late date of October 10 I began “real” school. Whereas before I only had 3 consecutive hours a day of “Intensive Language Program,” I know have ~ 5 classes which are unfortunately spread all across my days in very awkward ways. Let’s have a look at what exactly Winnie is studying here in France. First of all, the program I am studying in is called “The Parisian Center for Critical Studies” mmhmm, excellent, but what exactly does that mean? Well as far as I understand this means looking at art history, film, and literature under a “critical eye,” ie, by studying different French philosophy. So for example there is a class (which is very good, but which I am not taking) on American Cinema seen through French Criticism. I am taking four classes ... read more

For those of you just 'skimming' the blog text, I know you're out there, today's entry relies heavily on photos. In a departure from pretty much every norm, i'll look into my 'did not make the cut' folder here, and tell you a quick few stories about the photos that I did _not_ post. * I walked around 'The Marais' neighborhood in Paris by myself while Sherry took a nap. I snapped a few photos, had a beer, saw some art in a museum, saw pretty little square near Victor Hugo's home. * Sherry and I saw Sacre Couer as our first sight in Paris. It's a basillica, not sure how that's different from a cathedral, but it's white, and I think the name mean's White Heart. * We saw the Seine, that's the river through ... read more

All right, so I miraculously have developed a schedule that leaves me with Tuesdays and Thursdays off! This gives me two days off to explore this city without the crowds that gather on the weekends! Yippee. This does make my Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedules a bit long but it is definitely worth it! My first course is a writing workshop that is four hours a week where we focus on writing different types of essays in the French style and continue to learn the nuances we started to pick up in the Intensive Language Program. The professor for this course is a short blond woman who reminds me of Bette Midler, or my fairy godmother as it seems like she is going to wave her magic wand and everything is going to be better. She is ... read more

This morning we returned to our favorite café (the correct one this time) for breakfast. We then took a stroll through the Place de Vogues (home to Victor Hugo) where we met a couple from Poland and took photos for one another. We had planned to pick up some sandwiches and treats for the train ride to Geneva at our favorite bakery on the island but found it to be closed at 12:15 PM! What?? There was no sign posting hours either. With only 10 minutes until the taxi to the station we weren’t sure what to do. I asked the shopkeeper next door what time the bakery would re-open and she explained they are closed on Thursdays and Fridays. However, she did direct us to another bakery around the corner where we were able to ... read more

We stayed on Ile St. Louis, which is the smaller of the two main islands on the Seine on Paris. It contains very few hotels, but a large number of restaurants. The larger Ile de la Cite is home to both Notre Dame and St. Chapelle. Attached are some pictures walking around the island. I had planned night time photos of the island streets, as well as Notre Dame, but it was rainy each night we were there.... read more

I decided to head out to my favorite museum in Paris, while J took care of business. The Musee Marmottan houses a collection of Monet’s works donated by his family as well as other Impressionist paintings. It is located on the West end of town, several blocks walk from the Metro through a lovely park. The museum is in what looks to be an old mansion with 3 levels and various odd shaped rooms complete with creaky wood floors. I just love the ambiance of it and the way the light shines in the windows. It was here 3 years ago that I discovered my favorite painting of all time - Cloudless Morning at Quimperle by Henri Le Sidaner. Upon my return, I searched for it with great zeal. To my dismay, although part of the ... read more

...not much, really, but here are some pictures to enjoy. I played volleyball with a bunch of teachers at my school, and I was really nervous about it. As my dad said, "That sounds like it would be embarassing." But actually, for the first time in my life, I felt kind of athletic. I have a week and a half off of work starting Friday for All Saints' vacation. I will be going to more tourist sites in Paris, then heading off to Germany and Vienna with Chase Richards. Hopefully then the blog will pick up!... read more
