Aside from the constant rain, things are getting better and better. I'm feeling more at home with my family, which is really nice. And now that I have some of the amenities of home like banana bread, orbit and a straightener, I feel so much more at peace. THANKS MOM! I'm off to Troyes on Saturday to do some unnecessary shopping. The last thing I need to do is buy clothes, but it's the "SOLDES!" for godssake! And I would like to come back with some french clothing. Although, after careful inspection, I've come to the conclusion that there really isn't anything different about the clothing stores in France. You have your french equivilant to Gordmans, Banana Republic. etc. But it's from France, so that automatically makes everything 10 times more chic, right? But in all ... read more

Things have started to pick up a bit. School is getting better, I've started my travels and I'm about to move into the dorm. France is a-ok. Right now, I'm sitting in this little bar in the centre ville of Besancon called Bar de l'u. ( Bar of the University.) They're playing a vamped-up version of Michael Jackson's "Beat it," which kind of freaks me out. It's so funny how almost EVERYWHERE I go, there seems to be American music streaming out of the speakers. France is extremely americanized. There's a Claire's on the Grand Rue, even. But I'm not complaining, it's kind of nice to have some semblance of home. The language is getting better too. I now know that I can do just about anything I need to do in French. M. Olds told ... read more

School finally started, but my "cours intensif" aren't quite at intensive as I'd hoped. But who knows, it was only the first day, and things might pick up quite a bit. It's nice to get out of the house and DO something - even if it is spending eight hours at school. School is a quick bus ride away (about 10 minutes or so), so it's not too difficult to get there and back. AND I am learning valuable skills for my future (how to use public transportation)! I think I'll eat lunch at the cafeteria nearly everyday because it's pretty good and pretty cheap. But once I get into the dorms and have my own food, I think I'll bring it because I want to save money for trips. Speaking of trips... I think about ... read more

The weekends are a bit different here - at least in my vast experience ;) It's truly a time for relaxation, not running around like people tend to do in the states. I'm sure it'll be a little faster paced when I'm in the dorms with people my own age, but for now I'm kind of stuck in the middle of adults and children. I went running today, and it's quite a bit more difficult than in Nebraska 1) Because of the altitude 2)The hills Needless to say, I didn't last very long. Exercise is not ingrained in the lifestyle here. Gyms aren't as easy to find, and it seems that people just walk a lot. It's strange too because so many of the women here are so thin. I just don't understand. I hope to ... read more

So I'm here at my host family's house, and all is well for the most part. But it's still kind of weird living in someone else's home, using their things, eating their food, ect. Especially when there is a bit of a language barrier. Speaking of which. The french talk quickly. Really really quickly. There are times where I understand what everyone is saying, but then there are other times when I have absolutely no idea what is going on. That's when the little girl (Marie) tries to help. She's 7 years old and obviously speaks better french than I do. In fact, last night she brought out a kiddie book that is used to help kids learn how to read. She thought it would be a good idea for me to read it too, so ... read more

Finally here in France. God it was a long plane ride. Long and a bit scary. I honestly thought that my plane was going to plunge into the ocean a few times. Pair that with someone who already hates to fly, and well, you've got yourself a horrible plane ride. But that really doesn't matter too much now...because I'm here in Besancon! It's beautiful here. Just image the weather of Oregon, the beauty of old European cities, but the hustle of any modern city you could imagine. And it's not that the city is very big either- only 300,000ish - Which makes for a perfect size, in my opinon. I'm sharing a room in a quaint French hotel with Amy and Saraha. Luckily we all have our own beds. The room is pink. And I mean ... read more

Well, as my time in France draws to an end, I have been trying to spend more time here and take it all in. Also, my Eurail pass only has two days left on it, one of which I must save for going to Geneva on the way home in TWO WEEKS! I have decided to use the other for a day trip to Dijon tomorrow. I plan on checking out the mustard museum and the musée des beaux-arts, perhaps my last art museum before I return to the States. Several photo albums are forthcoming. Once I have finished with exams, that is. (p.s. i got a 14/20 on my translation test! generally 16 is as good as anyone ever gets, so it would make sense to make it out of 16, but this is france... ... read more

Wow! I saw the most amazing concert last night here in Besançon. I went thinking it would just be Mozart's requiem, but what I heard was much more. The group was phenomenal. Perhaps the best chamber orchestra I have ever heard live. For the first half, they performed some instrumental pieces by Mozart, a notturna and a divertimento. I rather enjoyed the divertimento, but both were quite good. The group was just so perfectly in tune and rhythmically together I couldn't hear a single flaw. Following halftime was the main event: the requiem - a piece I was privileged enough to perform with the Knox College Choir last spring. For this piece, the first and second violinists switched places. This is impressive because rarely is a group so fortunate to have two such wonderfully and equally ... read more
