January 7th Out of the small cramped hotel room of five girls and on to the next adventure: my host family! We spent our Sunday walking along the Doubs River and re-packing suitcases. And when we were all situated downstairs with our coats on and our bags packed it felt eerie-ly similar to puppies in a pound waiting for someone to come take them home. I wasn’t even sure if my host family was informed of the right date, but hooray! Alain, my... host father I suppose... came to fetch me. That was probably the most nervous I have been in a long time; first impressions are everything. “What if they don’t understand me at all??” “What if they don’t like the way I dress?” “What if I say something to compliment them and it comes ... read more

Bonjour mes amis! So I've decided that my journey here will be filled with des petits montaignes (little mountains). Last night, two of my girlfriends and I went out to dinner by ourselves, ordered a bottle of wine, dinner, and enjoyed ourselves immensely. This does not sound like an accomplishment, but let me tell you, we were proud. You don't know until you leave the US but there are so many little customs and things that go along with social interaction that must be learned. For example, in France, the waiter will never give you the bill unless you ask for it. So we were very happy to have scaled our first little mountain alone. This morning, I was feeling adventurous so I ventured out all by myself. I knew that if I didn't, I would ... read more

For all of you who were worried, all is well in Frenchland! It's 6:45 here now. This first blog is going to be pretty quick because I'm new at this and have limited time... so, it's the nitty gritty for all y'all. When I first got to the airport in Sioux Falls, the computer told me that my flight to Chicago was delayed which would cause me to miss my connecting flight to Paris...mind you, the only flight to Paris that night. A minor freakout ensued, needless to say, because we were meeting as a group and had a chartered bus to take us from Paris to Besancon, and if I missed that, I would have to travel alone. Sooo... I sat out in the lobby trying to contact anybody I could think of in ... read more

I was supposed to stay home this weekend and get my homework done before Nicholas, his mom and her friend get into Besancon tomorrow. But that definitely did not happen. I just got back from a perfectly wonderful weekend trip to my conversation partner's home in Jura with Megan and Marie. Christine was so incredibly generous while we were there. She drove us all around the region to show us some beautiful sights; she made us home-cooked meals, which is really quite the novelty for me here; she took us to a couple of concerts and gave us lots of wine - good wine at that. Needless to say, it was a great weekend. It's just too bad it took me two weeks before I leave Besancon to realize how beautiful this region is. We've ... read more

It was a long three weeks. Long but good, no doubt. After going from Paris to Normandy to Besancon to Barcelona to the Mediterranean, I was definitely ready to get home last Monday. It was so weird to be back in Besancon after seeing so many new cities, but at the same time it was really quite refreshing to be in a place that feels familiar. But even Besancon felt a bit different because it definitely did some changing while I was gone. When I look at the city, I feel like I’m looking at a pop-up book; the trees and flowers are so amazing here. Everything looks so lush and vibrant it almost seems as though it’s in Technicolor. I must admit, springtime in France is worth the clichés. I know I haven’t been ... read more

Ahh. No time for blog entries (well, except this one). My internet is completely dead in my room, and now I have to use the computer lab in another building that has only 3 working machines. Technology is so hard here. Anyway: The parentals are safe and sound in France. After a few days in Paris, Normandy and Besancon, we're heading back to Paris to finish it all off. Then Im off to Barcelona and the south of France. Details later. Just thought Id give a really really quick update. ... read more

Happy easter everyone! Just got back from our picnic down by the river, and what a lovely day it was! Sadly, the easter bunny didn't hop on down the bunny trail to Besancon, but no worries, France's easter BELL supplied me with quite enough chocolate. When I first heard about the easter bell, I was a bit taken aback...I mean c'mon, a bell? The notion was absolutely rediculous to me and my friends, and after a bit of research, I've learned that I am not the only one who finds this tradition to be strange. Check out the essay by david sedaris: http://quandmeme.net/blog/000019.html (just a note: the english in this essay is suppossed to be what they talk like in French...and I can totally relate.) Well, I don't have a whole lot else to ramble ... read more

It's Easter weekend, which means that I have an extra long hiatus from school because of lundi paques. So far the break has been lovely. Yesterday it was so nice out that nearly our entire group went outside to sit on blankets, chat and get some sun. Hanging out as an entire group is really a novelty when there's 18 of us; I basically see the same six or seven people all the time. Today, most everyone went on a trip to the Loire Valley, which is where many of the chateaux are located in France. I opted to stay behind because going on a trip with 50 + foreigners is more stressful than it is fun for me. Instead, a group of us are going to check out the mall, which surprisingly, I've never been ... read more

I am w-i-p-e-d o-u-t. I seriously feel like a 83 year old woman. I had a long day of shopping (but didnt' buy anthing...so proud of myself!) and walking around. I calculated the hours of walking I do everyday, and it turn out to be roughly the same amount of time it would take me to drive from Grand Island to Lincoln. Today, I wouldn't be suprised if I made a round trip. And this was in flats. Flat flats - the kind with no support at all. So needless to say, I am more than thrilled to be sitting on my bed like a lazy pile. One of the places Heather, Amy, Marie and I hit up was the citadelle, cameras and ice cream in tote. It was absolutely beautiful. I hadn't seen Besancon ... read more
