Friday 3rd May Today I headed off on the train to have a look around Rennes, about 35 minutes away by train, and the capital of the Region of Brittany. I was impressed. There are a number of significant buildings, beautiful parks, interesting medieval streetscapes and historic locations. I saw the Parc & Palais St Georges, Parlement de Bretagne, l'Opéra, Hotel de Ville, Basilique St-Saveur, Place des Lices, Cathédrale St Pierre, and my favourite, Parc du Thabor. I was surprised by the number of medieval buildings in the streets, many of which have been beautifully restored or are under restoration. The wooden frames and the way the first and second floors tend to be wider than the floor below are very interesting characteristics. Parc du Thabor was magnificent – the rhododendrons and azaleas, tulips and other ... read more

After an overnight trip across the English Channel to France, we drove to the farmhouse of our French relatives, Nat and Cathy, and their children Alex, Suzanne and Emilie. The 17th century farmhouse came with three hens, a rooster, two cats and various other animals, as well as a tractor, copse of small trees, orchard, trampoline and redcurrant and blackcurrant bushes. It is near La Mesiere, a small village. My Uncle Stu, Auntie Isa and their children Julian and Lucas were visiting from Australia too, so we spent the weekend with lots of family. The next day we went to Bayeux to see the Bayeux tapestry and the Bayeux Cathedral. The Cathedral had a crypt underneath. I took a video of the whole building, which took up a lot of space because the Cathedral was huge. ... read more

Monday 25 May 2015 The driver was sent out early on an errand of great importance. Find some milk for breakfast. An easy task. Just pop along to Mr Leclerc collect a bottle or two and back in time to serve Madame with a delightful breakfast. Oh how wrong was he. Mr Leclerc was closed. The roads were quite empty. It didn't bode well for the search of milk. By chance a small City Carrefour was open. Madame had her breakfast. After breakfast we took the opportunity of driving into the centre of Rennes. The streets were deserted. Had we missed something. As we drove into an underground car park we had the choice of floor and space. We needed a map so off in search of the Tourist Office, not an easy search but well ... read more

Sunday 24 May 2015 Brittany has been on our bucket list even before we started the planning for this trip. This part of France has always seemed to be different. Today we are about to experience the culture ourselves. Seafood, crepes and cider are a strong drawcard and places such as St Malo, Dinan and Mont St Michel are on every tourist's visiting list. Before leaving Granville we followed the Centre Ville signs to the old part of the city. Being a Sunday we thought everything would be closed. How wrong were we. Parking was free so after parking up we wandered the streets to find out what was drawing the crowd. Cafes were doing a roaring trade and one street had an open air market. An amazing array of goods was for sale. Seems like ... read more

Brittany France 1 to 4 October 2014 After leaving La Mont Saint Michel, we drove west, close to the northern coast of France, towards Cancale where stopped briefly. It was yet another lovely little French village. We then travelled a further 20 kms to Saint Malo, another harbour town with a stack of history. Once the feared base of pirates (corsairs), heavily fortified against Norman (or English) attack, today's Saint-Malo is one of the top tourist draws in Brittany. We were struck by the size of the Ramparts of the walled city (La Ville Intra-Muros). There was also the well preserved Chateau. The town was badly damaged during WW2 but they have done an excellent restoration job. Saint Malo is also known for its tidal power station, which was the world's first. Rennes is not often ... read more

Şehrin ta... read more

We got into Rennes pretty late at night, but didn't have any problems finding our next host. Joanna who is an animator and illustrator and loves Neil Gaiman was waiting for us and greeted us at her door. Thursday we walked from her place through a beautiful park and into the old city. We found an amazing shop selling a huge range of prints, posters and postcards. There were some historical, some artistic, some humorous, and a lot from movies. The shop made us want to buy a heap of posters and redecorate when we got back. Not really practical though, so we made do with a few postcards to send home. For lunch we were recommended a particular Creperie from amongst about 100 in the cicy centre! We had a galette (which is a savoury ... read more

So I just finished my fourth week of classes at the university here in Rennes (plus the two weeks of classes before that) and everything is going swimmingly--except perhaps, trying to type on this French keyboard. Did you know you have to hold shift just to put in a period. Ridiculous. It is nice though that I am starting to find a routine which makes me more comfortable. It is strange how similar France and the US are, however, it is all the little differences either in cultural or habits or ways of living that throw me for a loop sometimes. I am used to the fact that the toilet and the shower are in two seperate rooms, but it is things like how direct the French are with you. Professors will tell you in front ... read more
