We have spent several holidays in France, including twice before in the Dordogne area in the SW of France. The last time we rented an apartment here in Carlux from a couple originally from Toronto. They manage two other properties in Sarlat as well as their own. These can be seen at www.yourfriendsinfrance.org They spend the months of January and February in South Africa and we were presented with the wonderful opportunity to stay in their home during that time. This is a large stone house set on hill among wonderful gardens, with beautiful landscaping and two pools of goldfish. There is a date 1782 carved in one of the stones but this may date from a renovation with the actual building being older than that. There is an outbuilding, a bake house, Le Fournil in ... read more

There are advantages and disadvantages of traveling to France during the winter. A lot of the tourist attractions are closed or on reduced hours. However you have the chance to share in some real life activities. In January and February almost every village has a community meal that is both a bargain and an opportunity to share in the life of the French. Looking over the Sarlat newspaper you could attend one of these each weekend in a different community. Each community has a Community Center called a Salle des Fetes. We were a little intimidated but the owners of the house where we are staying had made reservations for us so we were committed. We could always duck out when no one was looking. Immediately we were made to feel welcome. We were shown the ... read more

The storm that is remembered is the storm of 1999. Exactly 10 years later is the next great tempete. Caught unawares last time there was plenty of advance warning for this one. We are situated in the South eastern portion of Dordogne, most of the devastation was south-west of here, stretching down past Toulouse into Spain. We have experienced more severe winds in Florida and even in Northern Ontario where our cottage is located. However we were on the fringe of this one and there were trees and forests destroyed and lives lost. Our immediate neighbour had the wind catch his satellite dish like a sail, pulling down part of the chimney which, in turn, shifted the tiles on the roof. Surveying the damage he mused that he would have been better off if he hadn't ... read more

The French spend a higher proportion of their income on food than we do. Julia Child in her autobiography My Life In France suggests that their obsession with food is inbred after centuries of doing without and famines. That seems a little far-fetched but after attending the Truffle Festival in Sarlat we decided to find out more about this tuber which is so highly prized. Truffle Menu at Chateau de Haute-Serre Cahors wine is not as well-known as Bordeaux or Burgundy but it is from this area and it is a favourite of ours. Chateau de Haute-Serre is a well-respected, major producer of Cahors that is featured prominently in one of the large wine stores nearby. For two months they are holding a weekly truffle lunch paired with their wine. Truffles grow underground near oak or ... read more

Sarlat is hosting the International Truffle Festival today and tomorrow. This two day event included two truffle markets, a re-enactment of truffle hunting, art depicting the truffle, cooking demonstrations, truffle products and truffle sampling. If you have never smelled a truffle, the odour is very distinctive and was quite evident when we got close to the market. Trying to describe it would be impossible. Truffles were on display and purchasers were picking them up and smelling the individual products. Prices ranged from €600 to €1000 a kilogram and are down this year due to a good harvest. Dogs are used more extensively than pigs and a re-enactment showed how adept theses canines are in searching out the buried truffles. The dogs begin digging but the owner quickly takes over, rewarding the pup with a biscuit or ... read more

Thursday 30th October Up a 8am and hit the road at 9:30. Heading? Perigueux. Small town with the obligatory old quarter. Beautiful cobbled streets, chic shops selling everything from jewellery to pizza in small portions. We visited the cathedral which has been completely rebuilt after the second WW. Visiting has become impossible as the rain persisted and became ropes from the sky. By 2pm Linda had enough. We were soaking wet, cold and miserable. Time to head for the Motorhome and hit the road for BERGERAC. Bergerac: nice name and a nice little town. But we had a major problem finding somewhere to park the motor home. Only vehicles with less than 3.5tonnes are allowed in town. Our motor home is a 4tonnes, therefore we are not allowed to leave the inner ring road. The first ... read more

After a couple of days in Paris we headed south to the Loire and then on to the Dordogne. If you like wine, food, beautiful countryside, hot weather and charming villages then the Dordogne is for you. No wonder the Brits have invaded, yet again! This is a great place for a holiday particularly at this time of year when there is so much activity here. Days have been spent visiting villages and shopping in the street markets. Loads of "foie gras" and fresh fruit. We have also had a great canoe trip down a particularly nice part of the Dordogne. As we paddled along we passed under stone bridges and looked up to the castles. In the evenings everyone heads off to one of the local villages for the evening food markets. This involves long ... read more

DAY 1: We had booked some cheap flights to Bergerac for 11 days where Hannah’s parents had a holiday house. Her dad drove us to John Lennon Airport in Liverpool and we took the three hour flight into probably the smallest airport in the world, Bergerac. It was just a shed in the middle of no-where. I got my passport stamped and we waited for a family friend who picked us up and dropped us at the house. For the rest of the afternoon Hannah showed me around the house which was an old converted barn opposite wine fields. In the evening we decided to go out and Hannah took me to a small town nearly called Eymet. We had a quick look around this tiny town and had dinner at one of Hannah’s favorite restaurants. ... read more

After spending weeks visiting World War II and Communist sights, we felt that it was time for a change of pace and headed to the quaint city of Salzburg nestled on the edge of the Austrian Alps. As Salzburg is known for its classic composers, Janice had been lobbying to visit the city for several weeks and when we found out that our good friends, Tim & Sarah, were going to be there as part of a soccer trip, our decision was made. A short train ride from Munich later, we arrived in Salzburg and were disappointed to find the city shrouded in grey clouds, cold and with intermittent rain - not what we were expecting from a European summer! Once we had dumped our stuff at the hotel, we headed back into town to arrange ... read more

This is really a Fairytale land of knights and castles. The scenery is dramatic. The Dordogne River cuts the valley into a deep chasm with the cliffs rising steeply on either side, dotted with Medieval Castle Keeps on their promontories and troglodyte cave dwellings along the rock faces. We hiked up the side of a cliff to go into one of these dwellings. It was fascinating. We visited a Medieval castle that our area is named for, Castelnaud-La-Chapelle, a key player in the hundred years war. The castle had winding stone staircases and teetering tower walls. it is complete with 3 giant catapaults, chainmail and suits of armour, and and armoury full of crossbows, lances, canons and bows. The bed and breakfast is lovely, the owners are American from California. They have some excellent insights into ... read more
