9/7/09 Today we were off to more small towns in the Dordogne to infiltrate some more castles. Most of the castles we have seen have been more elegantly decorated homes with good security than a true castle for protecting a village. Castlenaud promised to be that fortress we were looking for. It was a true fighting machine and was built in the early 12th century. The castle was sized many times and turned over power at least 20 times during the 100 years war. We saw cannons, gun ports, towers, armored suits, trebuchet and tons of other weapons of warfare. It was amazing to see all of that effort went into protecting this small village. We saw a jet fighter scream overhead and thought how ironic. Things really haven't changed that much have they? We needed ... read more

9/6/09 It was early this morning but Andrew couldn’t resist a ride in the Dordogne hills. We headed off to see the cave of pre-historic man today. The first cave we arrived at was the Lascaux Cave in Montignac, France. This is the home to some of the oldest cave paintings of over 17,000 years old. The original caves where damaged by letting people in and the carbon dioxide (see, Global Warming). So, they made an exact replica right next to it as to preserve the original art. It was amazing and almost as cool as the Sistine Chapel paintings. Most of the paintings were of bulls, buffalo, horses, deer and other animals. The colors were brilliant and made from iron oxide powders. They used different techniques to paint such as crating carving knives, brushes, and ... read more

Tried to go cycling today but failed! It would appear that cycle shops have defined opening times and when it reaches an arbitrary date in September then they all shut. We went into a camp site that had a huge signs saying hire bikes here. We could see the bikes but they said we couldn't hire them. We asked where we could hire them but we just got told that the “la saison est fini, FINI! “ the season has finished! Since when does cycling have a season? Do these people not want to make any money? Maybe George Bush was correct and the French don't have a word for entrepreneur! Having given up on the cycling we decided to visit Sarlat-la-Caneda instead. We got there and got parked without too much trouble. We had been ... read more

September 5, 2009 - Salat & Dordogne River, France We walked down this morning to Sarlat as today was the big market day. Once we hit the village we were amazed by all of the vendors and booths that had appeared overnight. They must have started brining people in at 2 am. The food was amazing. Butchers were there with fresh meats and sausages and fresh fish. Huge wheels of cheese, which we tried several. And of course tons of people selling and letting you taste fois gras. The fruits and veggies where most impressive as you bought them from the local farmers. I tried to buy just a couple of nice peaches and got yelled at from the farmers wife. I assumed I couldn’t buy only a few as she kept loading me up with ... read more

Today we headed off in the other direction and into the region known as The Lot. We have driven the road from Les Espioles to Baynac everyday so far so we felt it was time for a change! Our first destination was Rocamadour which is a town that is built into the cliffs. It looks like it is just stuck onto the side of the cliff. At the top there is a château, below that there is a series of chapels and below that there is the main old town. Rocamadour is an important Catholic pilgrimage site, second only to Lourdes, in France. Compared to other places we have been that was not particularly apparent. Considering we are not Catholic we seem to be doing a good job of visiting important Catholic sites. The layout of ... read more

9/4/09 - Sarlat, France The drive to Sarlat in the Dordogne was fairly short and the countryside green and lush dotted with sun-kissed gold stone chateaus and cottages. Sarlat was to be our base for 3 days while we explored the region. This area is known for goose liver pate and fois gras. We saw tons of geese farms on our way in to town and I made Andrew stop and take pictures. We found brochures in our tour books from 1999 which is when we started thinking about going to Sarlat and the Dordogne. Andrew bought me a big picture book from the area many years ago and we have been wanting to go ever since. We found a lovely campground (Pierre) that was only a 10 min. walk downhill to the medieval village. ... read more

Just spent two great days exploring the area. It really is pretty here and round every corner there seems to yet another pretty village or town filled with lovely houses. I have lost count of the number of times we have said “There is a nice house, I'd like that one!” Yesterday we went to Domme and then La Roque Gageac. Domme is a village right on the top of a hill so we had great views over the whole area. We could see for miles. The only bad thing about it was Tim's need to use the word Domme to make the tune for F1 racing (Domme, Domme Domme Domme, Domme, Domme, Domme, Domme, Domme...DOMMMMME!) every 5 minutes! The Dordogne seems to be the duck capital of France as every second shop we came across ... read more

Planned at beginning to go to France with parents. My aunt decided to come too - she ended up organising the trip as she knew France quite well and wanted to drive in Europe in her sports car. With Sarlat in the Dordogne as the base we were guaranteed beautiful scenery. Dad & Mum travelled down by train and I hired a 4 seat car for the week there. Turned out we got fantastic weather the whole week in Sarlat and had a marvellous time. Canoeing down the river Dordogne for 15 km between Vitrac and Beynac was a definate highlight. Saw fair share of chateaux. Also saw wonderful replica cave paintings at Lascaux II - originals only accidentally discovered in 1940 by 4 teenagers and Robot the dog! Road trip was great, lots of good ... read more

Bonjour! We have decided to go away for a week to the Dordogne. We flew to Bergerac with Ryanair (I think it cost more for our bag than it did for us on the return leg!) In terms of views it is one of the best flights I have been on for ages. There were very few clouds about so we had really good visibility. We flew over the Isle of Wight which looked just like it does on google earth (photos to follow when we return home and find the camera cable) Bergerac airport is nice but small. It is currently top of the list for smallest/most basic airport! We have been to a fair few small airports but this one will take some beating. The arrivals area was shed made of corrugated steel. There ... read more

Luscious Lillie’s blog Well, we’ve excelled ourselves over the last few days, staying in Sarlat, which turned out to have an ancient medieval cité, restored as only the French do. We spent a pleasant day and evening there. However, we stopped over night at an Aire on the outskirts of town which turned out to be the noisiest ever, not a wink of sleep. Moved onto visit Les Eyziers which was marvellous set in the heart of the Dordogne countryside by the banks of the Valeezes, surrounded by pre-historical sites where nethandrical man once dwelt. Our Aire was amazing so peaceful, quiet and welcoming (see picture). The first day we cycled along one of the recommended cycle tracks, supposedly an easy 12km, however we got lost and ended up cycling about 18km mostly up very ... read more
