Cruisers reunion. Sadly our Wigan-ers were unable to manage at last minute due to ill health but they did not want us to cancel get together. We compromised with an overnight stay. Good seeing the rest of the 'Happy Diners' again - plenty to chat about, as usual. Called in at Stratford-upon-Avon on way there (deja vu feeling). Warwick is a nice city and full of interesting crooked buildings! Wandered around Kenilworth Castle and intrigued by Lord Robert Dudley/Elizabeth I relationship. Lovely to catch up and hopefully 'we'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when, but I know we'll meet again, some sunny day ............' (not so good when you hear me sing it)!... read more

Short break with family in Mallorca. Bit chilly but nice trip. Villa great but honestly could have used central heating (if knew how to work it)! Had car so got about and, as per usual, ate well! Dad and Mum benefited from increased sunshine later in week, in sheltered spots!... read more

Trip of a lifetime and everything I had hoped for. Accompanied by Aunt Ann and had a brilliant journey, getting together with cousin/nephew and family in Sydney. San Francisco was a bit chilly but just one of those places you would hope to go back to. With the help of Ann's prior knowledge, did the place justice in one and a half days! Boarding Queen Victoria was such an experience and sailing out under the Golden Gate bridge never to be forgotten. Few days at sea across the Pacific in between stops and gained sea legs after about 3 days (with the help of sea bands on wrists) - interesting fashion accessory! Totally spoiled with Cunard service, food and entertainment. Never a dull moment and met two lovely couples at dinner who have become good friends. ... read more

Europe » Spain » Canary Islands » Gran Canaria December 7th 2009

Tooth able and travelling fit again. Left a drizzly, cold Manc to arrive in lovely warm Gran Canaria - exactly what I'd hoped to experience, a dose of December sunshine, away from the Christmas frenzy. Easy island to travel about on by public transport, well used to tourists too. Travelled up by local bus to capital city Las Palmas. Enjoyed great jeep 'safari' into the central island mountains for a day which included a typical Canarian food lunch. The saharan sand dunes at Maspalomas, where I stayed, are amazing. The pics say the rest ..... hope to one day return and investigate more of island by car.... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Conwy » Colwyn Bay October 15th 2009

Father suggested day out to see autumn colours and recommended Bodnant Gardens just south of Conwy. They are absolutely beautiful. Roses were still blooming and turning foliage of trees stunning. Intend to go back in Spring as Laburnum walk is worth seeing. After lunch in the 16th century Groes Inn visited Conwy castle and it has to be one of the better examples of a castle in its original state. Drizzle by then did not spoil visit.... read more

Chance to visit Windsor, Henley and Marlow with travel club parents are members of. Particularly wanted to see Windsor Castle and renovations since 1992 fire. Good autumn days out, weather kind and coach journey as good as could be considering route down M6/M40. Based in Gerrards Cross, saw fair evidence of wealth in and around areas visited. Getting well used to boat trips! No photos taken in Marlow as a chillier day and didn't hang about (but found a local chocolate maker's shop and had a lovely hot chocolate).... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels September 27th 2009

Joined Heather and family for a foray into Belgium. Had been to Brussels once before in my teens (travelling down to Strasbourg on a school trip) and remember the Grand Place and the Mannekin Pis well. Visited a lot more this time, including Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Mechelin. The Flemish (Dutch Belgian) and Walloon (French Belgian) split is quite distinct. There was a lot going on in Brussels this particular week, including a no car day on the Sunday when we arrived (quite weird, bit like Day of the Triffids at first, until the cyclists came out). The next weekend was an event to promote French community spirit in Brussels and the Grand Place had a big stage with Eurovision stylee acts (v. amusing). Haven quite recovered from a rendition of "Ça plane pour moi" by ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Dordogne September 13th 2009

Planned at beginning to go to France with parents. My aunt decided to come too - she ended up organising the trip as she knew France quite well and wanted to drive in Europe in her sports car. With Sarlat in the Dordogne as the base we were guaranteed beautiful scenery. Dad & Mum travelled down by train and I hired a 4 seat car for the week there. Turned out we got fantastic weather the whole week in Sarlat and had a marvellous time. Canoeing down the river Dordogne for 15 km between Vitrac and Beynac was a definate highlight. Saw fair share of chateaux. Also saw wonderful replica cave paintings at Lascaux II - originals only accidentally discovered in 1940 by 4 teenagers and Robot the dog! Road trip was great, lots of good ... read more

Europe » Spain » Balearic Islands » Minorca August 28th 2009

Kindly invited to join Gill, best friend from school, and sister and their mum for a week in Menorca. Lovely apartment in resort of Son Bou which has best beach in Menorca. Flew from Blackpool - very laid back compared to Manchester airport! Managed to hire a car for a day, which was no mean feat due to cut backs in car availability this summer. Discovered it is an easy island to get about. Beautiful coves and plenty nice wee esorts. A relaxing week including some hilarious games of knockout whist, fuelled by wine! The karate suit appreciated the beach (and I got a surprise when walking to the far end and reaching a nudist section)!... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Bergamo August 6th 2009

Wanted to visit Italy and this opportunity couldn be missed - base in Bergamo to visit Italian lakes and Venice. Turned out managed to see Verona too. Got about on Regionale local and Trenitalia intercity trains. Everything I hoped - beautiful country and city landscapes, amazing architecture and art, (and of course perfect food). Bergamo is a great small city with such an interesting split between modern and old towns, connected by road and steep funicular rail. Found local Bergamo fare on the Saturday night and drank a great Lombardy cabernet from a jug in a mug! Totally no understanding of Italian language but took a phrase book and coped just about (apart from misunderstanding on the Sunday, sailing across Lago di Garda to Garda town and ended up disembarking thinking all afternoon I was in ... read more
