Had a choice of directions to explore the area but settled for Bourdeilles 10km away as it promised a chateau. As it happened we didn’t actually visit the chateau itself. Drove down the narrow road through the village to the river and found a parking spot then went across a bridge to the other side of the river. What can I say but it really was a wonderful spot to sit and watch the world, or more precisely, the river go by. Just such a beautiful peaceful spot. The bridge is ancient, vaulted and arched and the river so pretty. Much clearer water here than at the campsite where it is quite brown which could be accounted for by the boats which go up and down there. We sat down to admire the view across the ... read more

We were quite surprised really to find that we hadn’t been to Brantome before as it is such an obvious place to visit, well on the tourist trail. We have stayed not far away, a little further north near Nontron, at Chateau le Verdoyer a couple of times in our very early motorhoming days and remember a lovely visit to Nontron with sister Rosemary and husband Barry when we all met up at the campsite so have very happy memories of the area. I’m including a tiny photo I found of them there as it makes me happy to see it. Saturday is market day in Brantome and the market is enormous. We had no real need of fresh food but a French market is always a delight to wander around so that is what we ... read more

We find ourselves with 3 spare days which is always handy so moving to plan D. We always start with a plan, helps with making sure we are not doing too much driving and to give a shape to our route but we have cut a couple of places a day short and missed out an alpine stop so have days to spare and in such a lovely area too. Happy about that. . A quick check on the map showed that just north of the Dordogne would be an excellent place to head for, Brantome to be specific so that is what we did. Had to leave our site anyway as the workmen were building chalets around us and we had to ask them to move their van and piles of wood so we could ... read more

We entered the Dordogne department today and noticed a change in the terrain to longer - but usually not steeper - ascents and descents. Lots of forested hillsides. We visited the charming town of Brantome. Its old centre is on an island in a curve of the river Dronne. But the big news is that we finally got our pass sanitaire. It turned out that waiting patiently like a good Canuck was not the right tactic. The impatient Gallic tactic of submitting exactly the same information a second time led to us getting the passes in about 10 minutes. So now we feel like full-fledged tourists and will be hanging out in cafes half the day, and poking into every museum the rest of the time, as well as having huge lunches & dinners in bistrots. ... read more

There’s nothing like having a lie in to start the day off well, unless of course you have a mammoth who has his own agenda and decides that he wants to count his nut stocks! Having stayed in bed as long as I could I went to check out the living area of our new glamping tent. Woolly says – With the tents currently unoccupied Adrian and Fiona had very kindly allowed us to move into one, the living space has just enough room to spread out my collection and carry out a stock infantry, I didn’t need Jo coming along and putting everything into one pile again! Having sat on the deck and sulked for a while and getting no response from the women I started singing..... that seemed to work and before I could ... read more

Arrived in France using the Channel tunnel after a five hour drive from North Wales we found ourselves in a Campanile in Rouen , Not the best of locations – in fact wished we had the motorhome already. Hotel was extremely noisy as the Tour de France aka Nogent Cycling Club arrived with two vans and a back up car and proceeded to service their bikes in the car parks. The noise from the adjacent road never stopped all night. Interesting meal of sausage which I later found out comprised of tripe!!!! Woke up next morning to heavy fog and headed south. Thankyou to nice French man who kindly used his credit card to buy us diesel when we found the garage only used French credit cards and of course we didn’t have one. As we ... read more
