I read that seeing Helsinki by bicycle is a good idea and I would have to agree. Friday I rented a bike and rode one of the many bicycle routes around the city. The whole town is really set up for bikes with their own lanes and traffic signals and all. I can't get over how much it reminds me of where I grew up in northern Wisconsin. I guess that is why there are so many Finns living there. Last night I checked out the night life with one of the locals. They say it is more active in the winter and right now it is a little thin because many people are on holiday. The arctic bar was not worth it. I was much smaller than I thought. It was the size of a ... read more

Hi everyone, Today is my third day in Finland and tonight I am going to check out the night life including and arctic bar where the wall and tables are all made of solid ice. I am really enjoying my time here even though the weather has been around 15c and rain on and off again. It looks to be clearing up now a little though. This is the cleanest place I have been to I think. It is very organized and modern. Of course everyone seems to have a Nokia cell phone and a sauna which I think is great. There seems to be a good amount of live music and I look forward to that tonight. The best part for me is the peace of being able to relax since I am staying in ... read more

Rides: 1 plane, 1 bus, 1 ferry Country count: 33+2! Today I have been in three different countries. I started in England - a night on the floor of Stansted airport to prepare me for the trials and privations of budget travelling to come, and then a way-too-early flight to Tallinn, Estonia, where I caught the first ferry I could to Helsinki in Finland. Kate met me at the ferry terminal, and took me to the hostel, where I promptly collapsed from exhaustion. I think this travelling thing will take a few days to get used to! And so it's begun. Our mad plan to travel from Helsinki to Istanbul, hitch-hiking and camping our way through at least 11 countries in 6 weeks. Have a look at the planned route of travel on the map I've ... read more

My first concert in Finland. Bar 68, Jyväskylä. This is an awesome band (www.lapko.com) - as most Finnish bands are! The gig was... not so good. Small place, drunk people, people that had no idea who the band that was playing was... Stage presence: Yeah... not so much, although it's probably not fair to Malja to put him against Manson... but they looked like they were having fun. An opening band might have helped, if Lapko was a bigger band itself. Looking forward to the new album and more gigs. Maybe in Tampere?!? ... read more

Time to put pictures and journals in order. I'm sure there is something interesting to do in this city... Not today though. I close my eyes and I see rusty metal, stairs, and flashlights! I should remember this next time we plan an Urban Exploration trip with multiple targets.... read more

Woke up on a lovely beach with dark clouds overhead. Our first target for the day was the Orijärvi Cooper Mine and the workers' housing quarters. I later found more houses in the back of the mine. Aijala Zinc Mine was our second target for the day, and like it wasn't enough, we also visited the Metsämonttu Zinc Mine, which we could had skipped. Long day that was.... read more

The Cemetary in Karjalohja was not in our list of places to visit, but it was across the street from the store... dead people... We run into a house that quickly became a target on our way, and within five minutes it also became the firstplace we got kicked out of! Mill of Toija. Our actual target of the day, was small and dark. We were not able to photograph inside as much, but we did have some camera/ghost experimenting fun. Don't ask. ... read more

Kalkkipetteri Factory. Not sure if it was a good or a bad thing to make this site our first Urban Exploration target. We arrived at the place around 3pm. We got in the yard through a fence that had already been cut for us, and walked around for only a few mintues before we found an open door to an area with a huge machine that was turned on! We were VERY careful! The building across from it was much taller and completely abandoned, so we spent a few hours there. At the end of the day we drove and camped at a small beach. Missed the red sunset by looking at the pictures we had just taken on the laptop's screen. Sad. Photo Album: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/ipleadthefirst/album?.dir=/be41&.src=ph... read more

Wondering why people take those bus tours when this is such a small city and the best places to be and the most beautiful sites are hidden on small streets... (Pictures of which will be posted somewhere in the future) Also wondering if I can get a mocha to-go! Coffee is served in glasses and mugs, depending on the kind, and you sit at a table to drink it, sometimes with a pastry, most of which come in huge portions. I'm not sure if the coffee shops have paper cups to give you a coffee to take away! They make the best mochas here! You can get food to-go in the middle of the night from the little stands that cater mainly drunk people. The only other thing to eat as you walk is ice cream. ... read more
