A clear plan for my whole day was put together in my head during my morning walk (not for the workout... from nothing better to do at 5am). The plan: Take care of some paperwork, get cell phone, figure out the bus and train system (that I have not used yet since everything is within walking distance). Action: Walk around for six hours. Buy spoon from second hand store. Buy a CD. Buy another CD. Get coffee while unloading my camera into my brother's mailbox - sorry Alex. I'm going to lock myself in my room until Saturday, or go to Estonia... to buy some CDs! This is becoming a problem, as I've been here for three days and I've managed to buy four CDs. Every time I hear Candice's voice in my head asking "now, ... read more

A visit to Santa, north into Finnish Lapland - and snowchains It’s my birthday on Thursday and we have a wager. Janice says I’ll get 3 emails-worth of greetings and I reckon I’ll get about 15! The Tourist Information Center was very helpfull in providing me with addresses for the local police station and a store to get a hair dryer. Free map was included! However, a girl working at a small food store on the basement of a shopping center was happy to tell me of the cheap place to get everything I needed! She also hooked me up with a map. First purchase in Helsinki? Two CDs! I needed them! There was a lot of walking around... A lot of tourists that spoke all different kinds of languages and took pictures of everything with themselves in them. At night, all two hours of it, I spent hanging out with a couple of people that were happy to introduce me to Finnish beer. I'm going to miss Fat Tire. lol... read more

Motorhome News from Europe 26 Sweden 5th July 2005 Across the Arctic Circle - twice; and into Finland If I asked you to paint me a picture of Lapland, it would of course have to include reindeer, wouldn’t it? It would also probably show Lapps in reindeer-skin coats, hood covered heads down, pulling a sleigh in a snow and wind-lashed landscape. Things have changed a bit. These days Sami, the indigenous people of Saapmi go about their business un-noticed and herding on foot is almost a thing of the past. The reindeer live freely in the forest and they are now only gathered together for separating and marking of new calves. Many Sami herd their beasts by snowmobile, 4 X 4 or helicopter nowadays and their traditional costume is generally reserved for special festive occasions. About ... read more

An annual ski trip became a regular feature of my life, pretty much as of January 2004 onwards, and leafing through ski brochures drew my attention to Levi, a compact and mysterious-looking ski resort in the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland. I figured that on this particular occasion, I would have to brave the cold more than I have ever had to at any one point in the past, so with my thermals at the ready, I checked in at the Crazy Reindeer hotel in Levi, and the Lappish adventure began to unfold. The hotel was nicely located in an area not too far from the slopes, and one or two nearby shopping options, and since the hours of daylight in the region in January were short, I was relying on illuminated pistes, as well as ... read more

We had come to Finland to visit our son, wife, granddaughter and family. Esse is a village near Jakobstad, which is about 300 miles north of the capital Helsinki opposite Sweden, across from Umea. First impressions were of vast areas of forest with cleared areas of farmland. I was to learn about the 188 thousand lakes and the interesting weather, it can be -30c. in winter and +30c in summer. What I was totally unprepared for, were the mosquitos by the million, when we went to the lakeside for a picnic, summers are spent outside as much as possible, I should have guessed with so much water. The picnic area was fully prepared with seating, a log pile and kindling. We completed the evening fishing in the lake with a makeshift rod to catch the cats ... read more

The ferry ride between Stockholm and Helsinki is commonly known as a booze cruise. It is therefore no surprise that the gang in the pub is very happy. More surprising is that they are Italians, not very common at this latitude. La Cosa Nostra going into Finland? Naw, probably not. Rather a group of friends or colleagues going on a business trip or just entertainment trip. The guys are very loud. Not great singers, but louder than the lonely British guy with the guitar and microphone on stage. When the singer and the Italians join forces the party really kicks off. One Italian is allowed to borrow the guitar and sing a song. In Italian. "Da da da daaa, da da da daaa", and some Italian words. Nobody but the gang knows it. The rest of ... read more

Helsinki is nice. No more, no less. A city on the water in the land of the thousand lakes. No spectacular sites, but clean, safe, and organized. The senator's square I find the most impressing, with the very tall stairs leading up to the big white building with the green roof. The university library is also cool. My buddy and local guide refers to it as an "Indiana Jones" library. This is a very illustrative description. The setting would be ideal for a shot of any Indy-movie, at least the research part. The problem starts when I get thirsty. Happens every now and then. The beverage of my preference is Diet Coke. To my amazement and shock I discover that practically everywhere the charge for a regular 50 cl bottle (20 ounce) is about €2 (approx. ... read more
