Good morning. I woke up late and didn't even get out of the hotel until after noon. Looking for a new place to eat lunch I remembered some coworkers mentioning a good Chinese restaurant slightly off the main drag in Tampere. I found it, but just wasn't feelin' it for lunch. Across the road was a shady looking mexican takeaway, but I nixed that too. I ended up back on the main drag trying a chain restaurant called Pancho Villa. After finding a booth I ordered up plenty of water to help me recover from last night and then some hotwings and beef tacos. The wings were good, but the tacos didn't meet my approval. It was some funky sort of beef stew packed to the brim in stale taco shells. No cheese, no lettuce, just ... read more

Alright, I finally threw in the breakfast towel… I NEEDED an American breakfast. I just couldn't hang with the soupy eggs anymore. A friend had advised me that there's an American Diner with supposedly authentic bacon n' eggs breakfast so I tried it out. I can't say it was totally authentic, but it definitely helped. Three The American Diner is located in an area of Tampere called Finlayson. Finlayson is an old cotton mill turned into something like a mall. There's a movie theater there, several restaurants and some shopping. There's also a Vakoilumuseo (spy museum), advertised as the first spy museum in the world. So for 7 euro I took a gander; it's small, but very interesting. Actually very similar to the one in DC, just smaller and without all the high-tech displays. It's interesting ... read more

Stopped and had a successful fueling of the Prius this morning. This may seem a simple thing, but trust me... nothing in the Prius is simple. And it seems finding a Finnish gas station that will take my credit card isn't too simple either. But today was a good day ;) Dave didn't have to use his AK... I think I'm dating myself. Another good thing is that I finally got my iPod up n' running, i.e. I bought a cable to plug it into the Prius. We'd been trying this for several days with no success and today was sketchy... Again, nothing is easy in the Prius! Put the headphones on the iPod and you have tunes everytime you hit play... hookup to Prius... who the F knows what you'll get. Anyway, I've loaded up ... read more

At work we had some meetings with other players on the project. In Finnish meetings you get free coffee and sandwiches... Bonus! I still saved room for Pea Soup at lunch though. Wow is that stuff good. Pretty much like ham n' beans, split pea soup, etc. Top with a few onions and their good bread. Very warming... I'm looking forward to next Thursday! After a mooseless drive home we played it lame tonite and ate at the hotel. I'll tell you what though, it's about the best food we've had in all the places we've tried. I had a manchego cheese appetizer, drizzled with honey and balsamic vinegar. Simple, but very tasty. Then I had the goat cheese pasta. I know, very cheesey meal, but it was good damnit! Compliments to the chef.... read more

Still no moose on the drive to work. A couple notable things from work though... None work related of course, haha. Lunch was charred herring... Very interesting, and it tasted plenty good... It's exactly what you'd imagine it'd be: A filet of herring with the skinned charred up. So I basically had some gross charred tasting fishy burps for the rest of the day. Tasted good eating it though. Well, like me, I assume many of you think of vodka when you think about what Finnish people drink. More specifically you might think Finlandia. I'd been looking for it though and haven't seen any on the shelves at the bars and restaurants I've been to so far. So I asked the guys at work if it's like the Foster's of Finland. See Fosters, Australian for beer, ... read more

Instant coffee, send thought of the day, eat soupy eggs and off to work... Still no moose! They're hard to see heading to work since it's still dark, but none sighted on the way home either :( Hopefully we'll have a sighting before this trip is over. Nothing too special to report from work today. Other than I'd bought a travel mug earlier in the trip to help me survive the long morning drive. Well, the best deal I could find is one of the "picture mugs" that has a plastic liner where you can insert photos. Well, I don't have, or really need, any photos. So I decided to print out some useful Finnish phrases and put them in my mug. It's come in handy and I'm slowly learning to pronounce, "Ilmatyynyalukseni on taynna ankeriaita." ... read more

Mondays are still Mondays in Finland, i.e. they still last forever and involve a lot of coffee and yawning. So needless to say not much to report on today. After work Dave and I decided to wander for chow in the opposite direction from our hotel that we usually go. This took us pretty far away without finding anyplace that looked worth having dinner at. We did find a bar to stop in and have a drink, but they didn't have much for food. As we were getting done with a beer the bar started to get hopping with bingo players. Yes, bingo. If we could've translated "B4" from Finnish we may have stayed. Later questioning confirned that bingo is not common in Finnish bars. Continued wandering further from the hotel found us in a residential ... read more

After last night let's just say I slept in and missed breakfast at the hotel. Finally getting up and rolling around noon I hit the streets looking for a barber. Remember I'd given up on the damned clippers. In my walking around Tampere I'd seen plenty of beauty shops, but nothing that looked like a truly straight male type of barber. I finally found one not far off the main drag in Tampere called "Paturi Only Male". It looked reasonable, but of course about everything is closed on Sundays and it's hours didn't fit with my work schedule so it'd have to be somewhere else or wait until next weekend. Who cares... It's time for food. I found a place called "Sevilla" close to the hotel. Seems like a chain, but it's not bad... Mostly Spanish ... read more

I got all caught up on sleep, finally. Cleaned up and wandered down for a quick breakfast in the hotel. Runny eggs; these could become an issue. Finnish food so far is great, but their idea of scrambled eggs is a half-poached runny mess. They're not all that bad, but harried work mornings call for some familiarity after a while. I think I may start throwing a plate of them in the microwave and see what happens. After breakfast I hit the street to find a voltage converter. Here's the history: I need a voltage converter because I brought my clippers so I can do my own homegrown haircuts. This is the only device I brought that doesn't have a built in voltage converter. Well... I brought a damned voltage converter: Jensen JEN1600, per its advertisement ... read more

Easy and short day at work today. The company we're here with had an employee appreciation event and were going to the theater in Tampere at night so most people left early. Dave and I took advantage of leaving early to try and make it home in time to make a weekly status telecon with St Louis. We didn't make it in time, and guess who's fault it was? Yes, the Prius again! One of my biggest adventures so far is getting gas into the car. Leave it up to a hybrid to be tricky on taking gas. First the Prius has a hidden gas tank door opener button... And when you push it... There are lots of beeps, like you left the lights on or something? I don't F'n know... but it finally stopped beeping. ... read more
