Geo: 58.2099, 20.8573We were all literally exhausted from the previous few days, in particular the very-full day in St. Petersburg, this second day-at-sea came at exactly the right now. We all slept in and enjoyed a room-service breakfast. While we elected to not return to the overpriced spa, Anna and I did play in the "Olympics Trivia," which we lost by one answer. Sigh. We also sat in the game room and played a lot of cards. All three of us also finished our respective books on this day, which was incredibly relaxing. We also elected to eat in the "specialty restaurant" this night, which was in the ship's sushi restaurant. The food was quite good and service was outstanding. With only a couple tables occupied, and with a view to the sushi chefs, it was ... read more

Geo: 59.4392, 24.7586With the red skies of the previous day's sunset, I'd assumed "red skies at night, sailors' delight" would hold true, and we'd have nice weather this morning. Instead, we opened our curtains to heavy fog and a steady rain as we slowly approached the port of Tallinn in Estonia. K and I had been to Tallinn back in 1987, a whopping 29 years ago. Sigh. We were there, however, by accident. As part of our visit to the Soviet Union as part of a class back at American, we were flying from Tbilisi, Georgia to Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in January 1987. Our Aeroflot plane was diverted to Tallinn, however, by ice fog in Leningrad. It was a very surreal experience, as our tour director shared very little information with us. I recall they ... read more

Day 185 Thursday 21st July 2016 – Athens to Tallinn Up at 4.15am for our flight today and after 185 days on the road we now work like clockwork in getting ourselves ready. Packed and checking out before we needed to but our taxi was already there so things were looking good. The hotel even prepared us a packaged breakfast which we didn’t have the heart to refuse, as we knew it was going to be bad - stale sandwich, my favourite. Had wanted to get the Metro out to the airport but that doesn’t start running till after 5am and the bus would take too long so we were forced into taking an expensive taxi. Flat rate of 38 Euros is painful but it was a 45 minute drive. Today’s taxi driver was ... read more

Geo: 59.4392, 24.7586After a cloudy start the sun finally came out and then went in again as a huge Celebrity ship came alongside- appropriately called Celebrity Eclipse! We missed the shuttle bus but it is only a 15 min walk to the centre of the old town through a medieval city gate. We have been to Talinn before but for the life of us could not remember it and no where we saw looked familiar. I love marzipan so we bought some at a little shop which also has a marzipan museum with lots of cartoon figures made of marzipan - very cute. The old town itself has cobbled streets lined with Germanic looking buildings, several churches and towers and lots of bars and restaurants and tourist shops. Do not bother getting the city tour bus as it ... read more

We had booked private guide to meet at the Information Centre in the middle of the old town at 10.00a.m. Met up with Ariel, such a lovely girl, just the two of us and off we went! Covered so much ground in the two hours we had with her it as fantastic! She is a uni graduate majoring in language and psychology, and as she said that now qualifies her for unemployment but she is lucky to have this job as a tour guide!!! 21 years old and what what a joy she was! Old town of Tallinn is a walled city perched up high overlooking the sea and surrounding areas. Showed us over the upper town and lower town, lots and lots of walking, she showed us a few extra sites as she said we ... read more

Geo: 59.4392, 24.7586This morning we get to sleep in a little later as our ship won't dock in Tallinn, Estonia until 10am. We have no planned tour other than to walk around the old town. Tallinn is the capital and largest city in Estonia. Tallinn's Old Town is one of the best preserved and intact medieval cities in Europe and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This sounds good and after breakfast, we head out from the ship toward town. The ship is here for only 6 hours, a short time for such an interesting site. We ask about a shuttle to old town but the tour guide says it's unnecessary because it's only 15 minutes away. We've heard that 15 minute story before. In Karen footsteps, that's about an hour or more. There's ... read more

An early morning rise this morning as we were setting off to Tallinn, Estonia in the former Soviet Union. This was the part of the trip I was most looking forward to. Growing up during the Cold War and hearing so much about the Soviet Union, it was amazing that I was going to be stepping foot here, albeit for just a day. The ferry crossing into Estonia took a little over an hour and as we pulled into the Tallinn, remnants of the Soviet era quickly caught my eye. In fact, the harbor that we pulled into, Linnahall, looks like a military fortification but is actually a former Soviet era concert hall and ice hockey rink. From the top of this complex, we could easily see Tallinn's Old Town, one the best preserved medieval cities ... read more

Narva is the closest Estonian town to St. Petersburg so it was quite natural that I decided to visit it. The tickets were a bit expensive despite the very short distance, mere 150 kilometers, covered within about 2 hours and a half on SimpleExpress bus. Narva is the largest Russian-speaking Estonian town, very important in the development of relations between the two countries. Its official date of founding is the construction of Narva Castle in 1223. Narva was seized by Russian troops in 1558, when Ivan the Terrible wanted to make Narva a major port on the Baltic Sea. It was Ivan the Terrible who built the Ivangorod Fortress opposite Narva. Soon Sweden and Russia started a war and the Swedes managed to capture it. Peter the Great took Narva in 1704. I think after that ... read more

TALLIN, ESTONIA A delightful walled, cobbled street, medieval Capital City, easily explored in a day! We were off the boat by 9.00am – that was probably a mistake as it was very foggy, so no view or photos to be had for the first hour or so. but by 10.00 the fog had lifted and we were treated, yet again, to another blue sky sunny day. Just wandered about, admiring the gabled houses and architecture, the small courtyards and narrow, cobblestone lanes, along with the grand churches and their spires! There were quite a few school parties about including a nursery group, all with their hi-viz jackets, warm hats and holding onto a rope in crocodile fashion! Very cute! Walked up to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral with its onion domes – there was a Russian Orthodox service ... read more
