Bouncing Around the Baltics – July,2017 My feet are getting itchy. Cabin fever is building. It’s time to pack a bag, grab my passport and blow this Nevada joint. Feel the need to walk in new pastures, discover interesting back alleys and bars. And where should I do all this, you ask? Why in the Baltics of course! This upcoming trip will add four new countries to my portfolio….. more stamps for the passport, just what I need. It’s my usual morning routine getting to the airport via Super Shuttle, and boarding the various Delta flights for the first stop on my latest adventure: Estonia. I even get to try out a new airline – Air Baltic – probably a local rinky-dink crop duster, held together with tons of duct tape and good wishes but what ... read more

So with a quick stop over in Laitse Castle we are in Tallinn, Estonia. You know this all came about because I saw a show on TV about must see Old Towns and knew I must see it. Tallinn was under the old soviet rule until 1991, so I was sure what to expect would it be dull and grey and unattended to, would it be run down and still needing love, well I was delighted to be proven wrong. It was to put into a word intoxicating! As we entered the city we notice how green and park like it was, the main streets lined with large fairy tale like trees, I fell in love with it before even getting to the old town. We found a small hotel attached to the walls of old ... read more

Toute l'effervescence ... read more

Our ship arrives in Tallinn the capital of Estonia. We bought a ticket for a shuttle ride into town but it is not far and we could have walked. We are let off at the walled city's gate. We met a woman handing out free maps to the city and she informs us of a free tour in english that starts in half an hour. We check out the main square and I buy a christmas ornament while we wait for the tour. Our guide is a college age girl who has grown up in Tallin. She is very knowleable about the history of Estonia and is open about the positives and negatives regarding the country's past. Estonia borders the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland. The official language is Estonian which is closely related ... read more

July 7 – Tallinn This morning we docked in Tallinn Estonia – the home of SKYPE – AND I might add the first country to electronically connect all it’s citizens to government services. Each person has a single identity card which serves as their health card/drivers license and everything else – they also have electronic voting. I recall studying this aspect of Estonia when I was involved in designing electronic services for Ontario. Anyhow….. we had booked a food tour of Tallinn and were met by our guide and joined by 7 others also taking the tour. This was a walking tour and I fail to understand why someone who uses a wheelchair and is barely mobile would figure this was appropriate but we did have one elderly person on the tour who had to be ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! I was indeed in luck today, my Tallinn Card still had a few hours of validity left so I said my goodbyes to Martin and thanked him for his kind hospitality before I jumped on a bus heading for Pirita. I started by the ruins of Pirita Klooster but unfortunately it hadn't opened yet so I continued out to the Tallinna Teletorn and went up to it's 360 degree viewing platform. Unfortunately there isn't any part without a reflecting window and in my opinion the view really suffers from this so I can't really recommend this place, especially not with it's rather hefty 13 euro fee to go up here. If they had a balcony part or something similar where you could really enjoy the view to the fullest then I would ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! Even though Martin set me up with a key we left together this morning, him to work and me to Viru Hotel where I picked up the Tallinn Card and I was ready to make it count! There was just a slight problem with my plan, everything here has really crappy opening hours! I had to wait for about and hour before the earliest attraction opened up, Niguliste Kirik, which is a museum housed inside a former church dedicated to saint Nicholas, built between 1230 to 1275. It's a museum of ecclesiastical art and it has some really interesting pieces, especially the Danse Macabre from the 15th century, by Bernt Notke. Unfortunately it's displayed behind glass which reflected the light a lot so it was hard to really enjoy it or take ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! I woke up early in the morning and took the very first bus out of Narva, heading to the capital of Estonia, Tallinn. During my travel I have heard a lot of great things about Tallinn and how it''s one of the most beautiful cities in the Baltic countries so I was certainly looking forward to going there. The weather was a bit dull when I arrived and I was getting pretty hungry so I started slow by dodging into a kebab restaurant at the outskirts of the old town, getting a bite to eat and surfing the web for a moment while waiting for the rain to blow over. Once the rain subsided I headed towards the closest spot on my list of places to visit, the KGB Muuseum which is ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! Well, today I unfortunately wasted pretty much half the day waiting for Roman. As I said yesterday the plan for today was to go to Narva Joesuu and visit a ghost town on his recommendation. While waiting for this he played some FEAR 3 with me watching, I knew he liked the game and I wanted us to get along and bond so that's what I did. After that we watched first a Russian action movie called Brothers 2 and then a Swedish comedy called Cockpit. So pretty much a very slow start to the day, granted, I didn't really feel like there was a great many places to visit in Narva so I just tried to enjoy the slower pace. The problem is that once the time came rolling around to ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! I had plenty of time before my bus to Narva would leave so me and Kristiiina went for a lovely blueberry pancake served with bacon and after that we took another small tour of Tartu, this time walking around to the other side of the river which was nice since it gave me the opportunity to see some of the areas we didn't visit yesterday. After that we said our goodbyes and I hopped on the bus and the ride to Narva went well, although I shared seat with this very talkative Russian lady who honestly kind of bugged me, complaining about me writing and watching movie instead of enjoying the landscape which honestly wasn't very impressive along this road. When I arrived in Narva my new host Roman was waiting for ... read more
