Picture don't really capture it
So with a quick stop over in Laitse Castle we are in Tallinn, Estonia. You know this all came about because I saw a show on TV about must see Old Towns and knew I must see it.

Tallinn was under the old soviet rule until 1991, so I was sure what to expect would it be dull and grey and unattended to, would it be run down and still needing love, well I was delighted to be proven wrong. It was to put into a word intoxicating! As we entered the city we notice how green and park like it was, the main streets lined with large fairy tale like trees, I fell in love with it before even getting to the old town.

We found a small hotel attached to the walls of old town, with the charm if the cobblestone streets at our door step. No room for cars in these old places ever so we found parking just outside of the city walls. You have to get used to that if you are going to travel to the old parts of the cities in Europe.

The medieval part of Tallinn is like strolling back to the 15th century with it's narrow and uneven cobble stone streets, not made for modern high heeled shoes. Most historical plaques are in both Estonian and English and surprisingly enough most of the shop keepers and restuarants speak english, not that I expect the world to speak English for me but it sure helps when you don't have to play charades all the time.

There are many city tours you can join or get a audio guide but we perfer to stubble and wonder around finding our own memories and treasures, wonderful hand made souvenirs to be found in the shops and also many vendors along the walls of the old town. Also a day at the harbour is well spent just to get away from the crowds for a while.

Pleanty of pub and restuarants for meals but we found the ultimate, I think, it was call Vanaema Juures which translates to Grandmother's Place, I believe they are mother and daughter cooking their grandmother's reciepes with a modern twist. Excellent food, just what we were looking for authentic Estonia food.

Hope you find the time to visit this magical place , you won't be disappointed.
