Welcome to the Eastern Bloc Estonia, where is Estonia? I’m sure the question has passed through many lips since hearing or seeing that we were taking a brief stop in Tallinn, the capital of the ex-Eastern Bloc country. While not a country or city that is commonly on anyone’s mind in America, this convenient port city has become one of the more common stops for Baltic cruises. It seems anyone heading to St. Petersburg or Helsinki on one of those behemoth cruise ships has stopped here for at least an hour or two. “So what’s the deal with Estonia?” you ask. This country has been through some serious hard times in the last hundred years and has belonged to some other country for much of the last 800 years. I’m sure that many of the ... read more

What do crazy wigs, blokes dressed up in cow suits, bungy jumping, traditional dancing, choral singing, hark rock, sausages and techno music have in common? Beer. Yes in Estonia all of these sometime complimentary, sometimes contradictory forces were brought together under the uniting and liberating force of beer, resulting in the Tallinn beer festival. One could say that it was a case of expert organisational skills that we timed our visit to Tallinn with the beer festival, but rather it was by sheer luck that we discovered that there was a festival on and that we would be there at the same time. We hooked up with a couple of Irish blokes from the hostel and headed out to the “singing ground” for our first European beer festival. It wasn’t as we expected: to our delight ... read more

When Lindsay and I were planning our trip this summer, we were always keeping an eye out for cheap budget flights. One great deal that we found was a flight on Easyjet from Berlin to Tallinn, Estonia. We also found a flight from Helsinki (a short ferry ride across the Baltic Sea from Tallinn) back to Cologne, Germany. It turns out the cost of the two budget flights plus the ferry was comparable to the cost of train tickets from Berlin to Cologne. So, we thought why not, and so we went. Tallinn was a different city than we have been in recently. The history and culture is influenced by Russia and Finland, so it made for an interesting mix after being in a Germanic/Slavic part of the world. From our short time in Tallinn, ... read more

Tallinn in Twenty Photos Europe » Estonia » Tallinn By AirMailJune 19th 2007Josh & AliciaPhotos from our day trip to Tallinn's Old City. We had never previously planned to come here, until we saw the ferry trip advertised in a Finnish tourist brochure. In many ways this was the Europe we had been searching for over the last 3 months. The place was so original, untarnished, and just plain beautiful we almost felt as though had traveled back in time. It was also ironic (and a great surprise) that we ended up here on our last day in Europe. We can't think of a better way to have ended our trip to Europe!... read more

Spent this week on a whistlestop tour of the Baltic states, 2 days each in Vilnius (Lithuania), Riga (Latvia) and Tallinn (Estonia) with long bus journeys between them. Very interesting places - surprised by the diversity between the three capitals. Vilnius isn't very touristy (not a very picturesque town), Riga has a very cool Old Town filled with old churches and Art Nouveau buildings and Tallinn looks superb - full of medieval towers, cobbled streets etc. Nice cool sea breeze here too. There's a lot of renovation going on in all three and frankly a lot more needed, but I guess it's not been long since they were part of the USSR. Definately an edge of Europe feel here, things are getting a little stranger the further east I go, as are the people I ... read more

Today our tour started in the medieval town of Tallinn. We walk up tooompea hill to the palace square where we viewed Toompa castle, now the Estonian Parliament. We were able to peek into a lovely Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky cathedral. Since this was sunday, no pictures were allowed but the clergy were all dressed in their religious robes, very ornate. We continued over the cobble stone streets for an overview of the lower city. The city is on a hill with city walls protecting the lower city and larger walls protecting the upper city. There is a Catholic St Mary's Cathedral but we could not enter on Sunday. As we drove through the new city we were should where the Russian monument was removed by the Estonians and where the riots occurred just recently. ... read more

Tallinn - Estonia , the city of all things old, trendy & tourists. We arrived in Tallinn, Estonia after travelling across the Baltic Sea from Finland (Evonne - I didn't see any whales :( ). Our first feeling of Tallinn was that we were moving further away from home. Once we moved away from the docks into the old town, we were pleasently surprised by how well preserved the medieval city is (even if it was full of tourists, like us). We arrived at our guest house (located in the old town) a bit tired from our nights of drinking in Finland, and although the room was small (and once again two single beds), it was nice. Far cry from some of the hostels we had been staying at. Our first order was a late lunch ... read more

I figured if I was coming all the way to Finland, I might as well go to Estonia. For many, its an easy day trip that takes anywhere from 1 1/2 hours on a hydrofoil boat or 3 hours on a cruise type ferry. I think there are a fair number of Finnish people who enjoy making this trip for the cheap cigarettes and well, duty-free alcohol available here. I was relieved to find that the prices are similar to canadian standards. A good bench mark is always Mcdonalds and five dollars cdn will get you an extra value meal here in Tallinn. After a rainy and grey welcome to Estonia, I spent most of the day wandering around the very touristy old town. This is a unesco heritage site recognizing the well preserved medieval ... read more
