Today we had no plans to do anything but we did have a well needed sleep in till eleven. We walked down to the local shop and bought some fruit, bread and juice. Eero came and joined us and we had a quick look around a Russian market before going home to eat breakfast. We then looked on the Internet for tickets to Helsinki and bought some for approximately twenty pounds for a return journey for the both of us. Rather cheap for a two hour journey. In the afternoon we went to the Tallinn open air museum and spent a few hours there. It was rather fascinating and we learned a bit more about Estonia’s endless history. Bits that I found the most interesting were the articles about the women in soviet occupation times. They ... read more

Not quite the cosy hideout we had in mind. After trying to get some sleep for a hour and a half we gave up. Every single person in the airport wanted us awake. They had a noisy crane thing, people dropped things, wheeled rattling trolleys past us etc. So instead we decided on a film. We switched on the pda, plugged in the headphones and started the film. Slowly bit by bit more people began to impede on our hide out. Around half three we were made to move by an airport official wanting to open a gate. Seeing as though there was no space anywhere we decided to actively wake ourselves up. We both freshened up in the bathroom and then got a pleasant surprise when we found out that checkout was open. We checked ... read more

"Europe on a shoestring" - is the title of my lonely planet guidebook. We've had some good times together, my guidebook and I. But, suffice to say, it has let me down on more than one occasion. In fact, many of my "trusty", backpacker essential items have let me down. There's the shorts that were so handy, with the big zip-up pockets, but would not stay up with the added weight. There's the trusty camera, which every now and again decides to turn itself off and not turn on for a few days. And most recently there's my beloved daypack, which i've had for years and has never let me down... until now. It always seemed like, no matter how much you crammed in it, there'd always be room for something else. Well, i was wrong ... read more

Tallinn is a medieval town situated at the top of Estonia and is similar in building appearence to Riga but with a lot of the shops, restruants and local clothing taking on a medieval theme. I stayed in old town at the Tallinn backpackers which was another social spot for heading out with loads of other travellers to hit the pubs at night. Our hostel had a underground pub which was once an old war bunker. This was quite a common sight in Tallinn and many cellers had now turned into restruants, shops and bars. It also had thick walls around the city and many underground tunnels. Came across the Hell Hunt pub which had been producing its own beer and cider for a hundred years and they were the most amazing drinks I have ever ... read more

Hi Everyone. Well after hot footing into UK for 1 and a half weeks I am back on the road. It really was a quick stop in the UK for a wedding and so my apologies to everyone I missed while I was there. However, my flight out of Stansted on the 6th Aug proved to be one of the hardest connections to make. Arriving in Heathrow from Beijing was just the start of the UK transport issues. I could not get off the first plane to get to my Manchester connection as they had only laid on 1 bus to the terminal for a 300 seater boeing 777. Assuming I would miss my Manchester flight (transfer time to terminal 1 from 4 is 75 mins minimum!) I rushed through passport control etc... only to find ... read more

Geo: 58.386, 24.4986Bussed down the country 127km south on Eurolines to Parnu, staying Koidula Park hotel On Kuninga (more reminisent of a Blackpool B&B I'd say only dearer), beside it was an 18th century Elizabethan church with lovely maroon and ochre brick work and over looking Koidula park. All very nice and the sun was splitting the rocks, so after a walking tour we went to the Superbrand beach the 1st afternoon til after 7pm, seemed to be a really nice place altogether UNTIL we tried to get food. They may as well have had a big sign at the town perimeter saying 'Vegetarian's F. Off', the mexican restaurant had NO bean dishes (I think that is incredible), the turkish had no falafel, and they were too up their own asses in the fancy Italian to ... read more

Geo: 59.4392, 24.7586Got the 13:15 Eurolines bus from St Petersburg to Tallinn but it turned out the taxi brought us to the second stop so no bus til 2pm and had been told get there early so we arrived at 11:15am d'oh! Fortunately there was a coffee shop and it was good to have time to write up all the details of the last week. By 16:45 we are at the pre border check point Ivangorod from where it was 212km to Tallinn, we had to get off on the Russian side with the bags, then get back on coach and enter Estonia at 17:00 where they take away your passport for a while. They only checked 2 random bags from the boot and by 18:05 the passports were back and we were welcomed to the ... read more

Hello all.. We are just coming to the end of four days in the beautiful capital of Estonia - Tallin. a magical medieval walled city on the Baltic Sea full of 13-17 century buildings, churches and towers. We have enjoyed just wondering around taking in the sights and today had a few hours at the beach worshipping the northern sun! Not much to tell as we have been just indulging in hot chocolates, fine European pasteries, Estonian food (not the traditional pig's ears!) and beer! We will try and put a couple of photos on this one to give you some idea... taken from the top of St. Olaf's Catherdal once the tallest building in the world at 257m and now climbed to the viewing spot via 273 stairs! We are taking the bus tomorrow ... read more
