We've been extremely busy in the past few days. Arriving in Tallinn and finding a hostel was very easy (although on our way to Stansted the coach driver nearly crashed...). We settled in quickly and though we hadn't slept much we had to go out and make the most of the time we had. The city is very beautiful, as you've probably all heard, but there was very little atmosphere of any kind. Just peace in the daytime and a few rabbles of Brits roaming the town at night. Hardly any local people on the streets makes it seem much like a museum covering the whole of the medieval old town. We spent most of the two days we had exploring the many centuries old alleys, walls and facades crammed into the easily walkable but ... read more

Sal was right about the Lonely Planet's "Europe on a Shoestring": 'Well, that is unless you call over a thousand bucks a week "shoestring"'. Nonetheless, as we hit the end of Adventure no. 1: Europe, we thought we'd give a bit of a summary. This computer is cool, we have just realised, because you can change the nationality of the keyboard (except it keeps defaulting to hungarian). So: Happz Euro travel blog )HungarianĂ– Hqppy Euro trqvel blog 9French0 So the run down.... 1. Portugal Best food: That take away chicken shop in Lagos. We would have taken away the shop too if we had been allowed. Best food 2: Those custard tarts with cinnamon and icing sugar. Hostel: Carlos House in Lagos had the most eccentric owner, and the best terrace for drinking the local ale. ... read more

Untitledzacandsof Wow. What decisions we have to make in Tallinn. I hope we don't keep up this stress forever. 1. We have to get out of bed. Do we get up at a) 11am b) 12pm c)1pm 2. We go to the best ever pancake restaurant for a cheap breakfast. Do we a) order the champignon and blue cheese b) order the bacon and smoked cheese c) order the raspberry and condensed milk d) order the chicken fillet e) you get the idea 3. We feel like having a sauna. Do we a) have the free one at the hostel b) go back to the incredibly spekky hotel, where sal and tristan gave us a private sauna as a wedding present (overlooking the old town, the sunset, we had our own pool, how romantic!!!!) 4. Who'd have believed I'd use that joke?? Okay, so I didn't believe it either. Estonia. How do I describe it? It's.....odd. It's an Eastern European country trying desperately to haul itself out of the post-Communist malaise and into Scandinavia. Tallinn is a city that is obviously developing quickly and there is clearly a great deal of wealth making it's way into the pockets of the locals. Despite this and the removal of most of the obvious monuments to Communism some parts of the city still feel as if they are still within the border of the Soviet nation. I think some of the people think they're still there too. I took a great deal of pleasure in seeing more than a couple of Trabants still cruising around the city! Brilliant! Estonia has really had something ... read more

A while ago dad had the opportunity to go to Tallinn in Estonia with his job. He brought us with him because he thought we would enjoy it. Dad was on a conference much of the time so we had to have fun on our own. But that is not a problem. We know how to enjoy ourselves. Mum and dad can be so boring sometimes so we often have to take matter in our own hands to ensure we have fun at least. First dad was on a conference at his job. Then we spent the time playing with dad's computer. After that we left dad's job. First we got a bit worried when we were not going towards airport like we usually do when we travel to foreign countries. But then dad explained that ... read more

I'm jet-setting around Europe now, (is it jet-setting if you've got the middle seat? I'm not sure) and I've landed outside of Russia again. HISTORY ALERT! Tallinn is the capital of Estonia and was founded in 2000 BC. It hosted the 1980 Olympics and is the home of a popular candy known as the "curd snack", which I can assure you I didn't partake in. Curd snack, heh heh.... read more

I have just come back from a quick visit in Tallinn, Estonia. Strictly this was not a holiday because I was there for a conference. But I had the opportunity to spend a few hours in Tallinn and tried to make the most out of them. I decided on spending the time on visiting two different sights. First Pirita, an area on the coast of the Baltic Sea just north of the City Centre, and then the Old Town. The Old Town is easily the biggest tourist attraction in Tallinn. Most parts of the Old Town dates back to the Middle Ages. Tallinn was one of the cities in the trade union the Hanseatic League. To walk around among the well preserved houses in the Old Town sometimes makes you feel like you have been warped ... read more

After the craziness that is Russia, Tallinn (Estonia) was a wonderful relief! We were not able to get visas as we were hoping for Belarus but the Baltic's so far have exceeded expectations to make up for it! We arrived in Tallinn early morning after the worst overnight bus I have ever experienced- the heater was on me all night and the icy road made for an uncomfortable bumpy night! None of the luxuries of south American semi-cama just rock hard seats and leg room for midgets. Tallinn old town is a beautifully preserved medieval maze of cobbled streets and squares. There are plenty of tacky taverns with waiters/waitresses dressed in ye olde clothes which is unfortunate but that's what happens when easyjet start flying somewhere! The best thing (or worst depending on how you look ... read more

In the last week and a half I've been through Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. I've said "Arrr" to a drink with a real-life Sweedish pirate in Riga, "ahh..." to some incredibly hot 'dancers' in Tallin, "uhh??" to ticket sales and collection people pretty much everywhere, and most importantly "aha!" finally finding Shane sleeping in a backpackers in the far north of mainland Europe. Right now we're on a 21h journey back to Wroclaw for a final two days of freedom before I have to fly to Scotland and begin to again make a worthwhile contribution to society. It's been an interesting way to spend my last couple of weeks to say the least! It certainly gave me a taste of a completely different fast and furious style of travel. It's worked out well, it's good ... read more
