oh eastern europe. how entertaining you are. I took a cruise from Stockholm to Tallin with a brief, 10 min, docking in Finland. The cruise was... interesting. That night we enjoyed cheap food at the "fast food" joint, some duty free shopping, karaoke and the aluminum club. Then we got off at about 10:30 in Tallin, walked through Gamla Stan there (which is apparently one of the most preserved), did a little shopping, and was back on the boat by 4:30. I even had authentic Estonian food: fried rye bread (delicious) and Farm Gir's Stew (vegetables and broth--kind of boring. luckily the bread was very filling). I bought a shirt that I was told said "don't tell/speak" in russian but apparently it means shut up. I thought I was getting some communist propoganda or something but ... read more

We work up early and drove to Estonia for our second concert. We had no car problems and arrived in time for lunch with the pastor. Then we went to the culture house to set up for that evenings concert. Before we did anything we decided to have our team prayer. We wanted to really place everything in God’s hands because we had all felt like something was lacking the night before. After we set up we had about 1.5 hours break so Talitha and I went to find a café. After asking people on the street we found a little Armenian café. Talitha’s mom is Armenian so she was really excited to find that place. She said it felt like home to be able to speak Armenian to the owner and his wife. We even ... read more

We woke up in Estonia and hoped in the car for a day’s drive to Latvia. The sun was shining on the drive so everyone was looking forward to a relaxing uneventful drive to Latvia. The first part of the drive I worked on the accounting (we each have practical jobs to take care of for our tour and mine is the “Economy Responsible”) and had my PT. On the second half of the drive I took over driving the passenger van and I was able to have some really good conversations with Talitha. Beat has always gotten car sick while reading in a vehicle so those in the back prayed for him and now he is okay! Praise God! We ate dinner at a little diner in Latvia. For 200 Kr or about $30 the ... read more

Surprisingly, the sub-zero temperatures were not overly difficult for me to adapt to, but I was certainly thankful for my decision not to wax down in Australia as any extra coverage is a bonus, adding to the 5 layers that I already had on most of the time. Of course, no matter how many layers you had on, the beer coat always made the walk home from the pubs bearable. The ferry ride over to Tallinn was fantastic, a very modern ship with numerous bars, restaurants and entertainment. We went for the 3 hour express ferry on the way over, but on the way back, we went on the ‘party boat’, which was an overnight stay on a much dodgier boat that I’m pretty sure was full of KGB spies the way that people were looking ... read more

HI Today I took the 1.5 hour fast boat to Tallinn.. What a city.. I LOVED it.. it was so amazing.. The weather had been bad and the boats did not go yesterday and wouldn't go today till noon. They couldn't guarantee that I could make it back to Helsinki but I took the chance and went anyways.. and I am SO glad I did.. I now wish I had come sooner and went to Lithuania and Latvia as well.. but what can you do.. The old city is like nothing I have seen so far.. my Favorite place to date. The narrow, and I mean narrow, uneven cobblestone streets that seem to go no where and then you see a tiny alley or stairway that really IS still a street.. the unending church spires and ... read more

Hi all, sorry it has been so long, but I have been pretty busy. The ferry over to Tallinn was very nice with a cafe and store on board. I thought it would travel a little faster being a hydrofoil, but we went a constant 38 MPH, still not bad at 1 hour 30 min for the crossing from Helsinki. Tallinn is a huge port for tourists and the streets of the old town was sort of like being in Disneyland. Filled with toursits with their cameras out taking pictures and buying trinkets, but the town has been put back into original condition and was filled with interesting buildings and it had a compleate wall around the city still in very good shape. It is one hill which was good for remembering which way you came ... read more

Rides: 2 cars and a truck Weather: after more days of mostly rain, we finally saw some sun today! And my shoes are dry for the first time in days! Finally properly on the road. We had been standing 20m from the last bus stop along the road to Parnu for approximately 30 seconds when our first ride picked us up. And took us about 20km down the road. To an inconvenient spot. A short walk through a long downpour later, and we got another ride for another 20km or so. Then we waited an hour before a polish truck driver picked us up and took us all the way to the outskirts of Parnu. We had hoped for some sun, or at least, lack of rain, in the supposedly sunny beach-holiday destination or Parnu, but ... read more

Weather: raining, no wait, sunny! no... raining, no, it's sunny! I think they call this unsettled? I emailed this to a friend, then realised it would make a good entry, so thanks to the miracle of cut&paste, here is a summary of my first 3 days on the road: We're in Tallinn now - I arrived in Helsinki on monday evening after 25 hours travelling (it usually takes that long to cross the world, but to cross europe, it seemed a little much), spent 24 hours there, and have spent the last 2 nights in Tallinn. We're still in Tallinn, but have moved from our pleasant but overpriced hostel to a much less pleasant but still overpriced camping ground 10 mins out of the city. It hasn't stopped raining for more than an hour or so ... read more

I never thought I'd go to Tallinn but my new Canadian friends said there were a lot of "crappy" buildings! Yes, that is a good thing in my book. The ferry ride was only two hours, and I took my first picture five minutes after I walked off it! A few minutes later I put the camera away and just walked around. It was beautiful. The Old City mainly. For lunch I had the best tomato soup ever and something with potatoes and cheese. Coffee and rum cake a bit later at an ultra cool coffee shop/bowling place/I don't know. If you ever need Amber jewlery, Hitler memorabilia, or just very very old stuff, Tallinn is the place to get them. And they are VERY cheap, as is everything else. I bought NO CDs. Awesome day! ... read more

We arrived in Tallinn at 5.40am morning of the 25th after a nightmarish overnight bus journey from St. Petersburg. It wouldn't have been so bad except for the border crossing, one for exiting Russia and one for entering Estonia. You think leaving a country would be easy crossing the border out of Russia was quite a big ordeal. 2am in the morning we all have to get off the bus, take our rucksacks, bags etc and got through immigration which took ages and then through customs which took another hour or so. After boarding the bus again finally we travelled through no mans land for about 20mins and then hit the Estonia border and had to repeat the process again. After a local bus ride which we thought would take us into the old town but took ... read more
