Geo: 58.2534, 22.4892Today I turn 30 ... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well, what do you do? At least I'm turning 30 while doing what I love to do. And I must admit that celebrating a birthday in Europe for the 3rd year in a row is pretty cool. I wonder how much longer I can maintain that tradition? Mary Moment #20: A funny thing happened last night. I was in bed, trying to sleep when I heard some loud snoring. I looked around the room - Magda and her boyfriend weren't sleeping yet. The other bunkmate was asleep, but it wasn't him. Perhaps it was coming from another room. It couldn't have been Mary - her light was on and she was lying in bed doing Sudoku puzzles. But then I walked up to take a look ... ... read more

Hello all! I know that it has been a while since I left and I apologize for only being able to send bits and pieces of information to you over the past few days. The internet is good here; it’s just the fact of getting it up and running. Cassie and I are going to split the internet costs and get it for the room, which I think is the best plan. So, let’s recap the past week. My flights coming here were really not bad at all. I will say, though, that the international part of O’Hare really needs to be updated. The place looks (and smells) like a small Ellis Island. Once I got through security there, everything was a breeze. There was a small issue of scanning my passport, like in Louisville, but ... read more

Geo: 59.4392, 24.7586We had breakfast with a German tourist and an Aussie lawyer that was about to take the Trans-Siberian railway to China. It's a crazy journey! Like almost all Aussies I meet while traveling, he was living and working in London. He's doing some traveling before moving back to Australia. A rainy, cold, and windy day. We did a bit of a walking tour around the old town and then went to the occupation museum. I found it disappointing - you wouldn't get much of an experience there unless you were prepared to watch seven 30-minute long documentaries. We wandered over to the train station for lunch. I had read that a cafeteria there served the cheapest hot lunches in town so I thought it would be good to try out a non-touristy place. It ... read more

Geo: 59.4392, 24.7586Knowing that she hadn't eaten dinner last night, I left a few granola bars on Mary's pillow before going to sleep. This morning, she told me she thought "What a great hostel! They leave food on your pillow!" She was a little disappointed when I explained that it was NOT the Estonian equivalent of a mint on the pillow. Mary did a crazy thing last night - she slept with 4 guys!!! Of course, it was 4 guys all sleeping in separate bunks, but that's a minor detail that makes the story less interesting. The hostel serves a good breakfast - toast, cereal, yogurt, ham, cheese, tomatoes, good jam, and juice/coffee/tea. They also had some powdery mix of grains that is supposed to be a traditional Estonian breakfast when mixed with yogurt. I never ... read more

I'm sorry to have waited so long to write, but I literally had no other choice. I finally made it, and I just wanted you to know that I am fine, I am in the flat and have great flat-mates. School is keeping me busy and I don't have an account to use the email just yet. I have to wait until Monday to get that. My wonderful roomate, Cassie, is allowing me to use her computer, so hopefully I will be in contact more often. I promise I will be in contact more promise often, I promise. I will be putting pictures on here as soon as I can, as well as getting Skype. I love and miss you all so much!!!... read more

We got up and decided to get to the tourist information and see what there was to do in Parnü; we quickly decided that there's very little there in wet weather. Again we went for a walk around and went into some fashion shops still stuck in the 80's. We then went to a supermarket to get some food. After buying the usual bread and cheese, and some strange chocolate coated kiwi cheese curd snacks, we set off looking for a nice place to eat it. The snacks were interesting to say the least. While walking towards the beach the heavens opened and we hid under some trees. Instead of waiting there for the rain to stop we ran to the shelter of a large building. Once the rain died down we put on our macs ... read more

After a relatively good nights sleep (the best you can have in a tent) we got up for freshly made porridge with breads, cheese and meats. We then chatted to the family and listened to authentic Estonian music before saying goodbye to his wife, Katerin, and her sister, Reet. In the town we visited the museum. It was another castle built by the Teutonic Order during the 13th century after Estonia was conquered. Again it had suffered damage from leaving soviets. In the Second World War German and Russian troops met there and 75% of the town was destroyed in the fighting. We then drove to the University at Tartu, Estonia's university town with 1/5 of the population being students. We went up in the main towers which were in ruins but still sturdy enough to ... read more

Today I woke up when Eero's mum walked into the room where we were sleeping. Not being able to speak Estonian and she not speaking English we stood and waited for Eero to call and explain why we were there. We spent the morning packing up our stuff and tidying up a little. Eero came round and helped us pick out a cheap hotel for parnu, which if everything goes ok we should be there tommorow evening. Rob and I caught our now familiar bus no.6 into town and then jumped on a tram to kadriorg which is the park in which Peter the great used to live. It's a beautiful park with fountains and little pathways leading around it. Also it had a long path down to the beach which has a large statue dedicated ... read more

Hello, hello, Where to begin with Estonia... I cannot possibly ever explain this country. It is filled with the more wonderful people I have ever come across... So, John and I decided to hop a ferry and check out the small Baltic country after our long train escapades. We arrived in the main city and were marvelled with the charm and quaint beauty of the old town. After a few days and searching out each little nook and cranny, we were ready to move on. We had a choice, east to the national Park or west to the beaches. Well, having been penned up on a train for what seemed like a lifetime, we opted for the national park and loads of hiking and camping. So, first we were off to the local shop to find ... read more

Early this morning we were woken up by the most tremendous thunderstorm I ever heard in my life. The whole building shook with the thunder and the lightening was so bright and frequent. I was rather scared as the storm was right above and it was so loud. When we woke up again (Rob woke me up) it was rather bright so Rob got up and checked the time. It was just before nine and we had planned to sleep in till eleven. We got up leisurely and had a mixed breakfast of bread, cheese, yoghurt and fruit. We then slapped on the sun cream, as it was the hottest day so far, and went and caught the bus into town. We got off where everyone else seemed to, in the modern shopping area of the ... read more
