http://www.heygo.com 2nd March - Dubrovnik Old Town Wall Walk Despite more than its fair share of attacks over the years, the walls protected Dubrovnik for centuries without ever being breached, but one thing that has left its mark on them is a more recent conflict – the Balkan Wars. The city was subject to major bombing during the 1990s, though it’s hard to spot it now. The walls are the main reason why Dubrovnik is well known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. The whole of the old city is encircled by 1.2 miles of thick stone,25 metres high and six metres wide in places and has been protecting the city for centuries – whether that’s from invaders or earthquakes. The first city walls were built in the 11th century but the shape today dates back ... read more

Staying safe, social distancing, wearing a mask, and acutely aware of my surroundings has led to unquestioned boredom for the last 11 months. We have tried to be as diligent as possible, avoiding group functions, dining in restaurants, shopping for food only when necessary.Just having received my second Covid vaccine does not mean everything is automatically better. But I think we are headed slowly in the right direction. Could that direction be Scottsdale in March, Washington, DC in April, and Europe in May? Maybe. In the meantime, I have broken up my "Ground Hog Day" routine by working two weeks on the local University campus. But there are very few patients here, even fewer people on campus as well. But my daily lunch time walks are quite enjoyable. There is somethin ... read more

All the way in the South of the Croatian Adriatic coastline lies a city often described as the "Pearl of the Adriatic" and certainly internationally the most know city of Croatia, Dubrovnik. It surpasses the international popularity of the capital Zagreb, certainly within the tourist community. In the recent decade Dubrovnik became the victim of its own success. A massive over tourism developed crowding the city with masses, arriving by cruise ships or charter flights. Especially in the old city it became impossible to walk the narrow streets, and finding space in cafes or restaurant became a logistical challenge, spoiling the enjoyment of visiting and the prices. And then came Nui and Nenad and everything was different ! Dubrovnik was deserted. Hotel prices halved, restaurants offered 20 to 30% discount on food and beverage and flexibility ... read more

Lovely lazy morning with a late breakfast and then down to the quiet of the beach to meditate ( been a bit slack while I’ve been away). A gentle lapping against the stoney beach and gulls singing in the background made it the perfect location. About 45 minutes later I headed back to my room to prepare for a walk around the bay and heads to the next bay that leads to open waters along an old rock wall. Today is all about relaxation and soaking the Dubrovnik sun and sea. Walking back over the beach stones, small stones made their way into my sandals and took 3 attempts to get rid of them. Wandering off I pass the first so called sandy beach at my favourite sunset spot........ I am soon reminded from previous visits ... read more

Today has been all about the old town of Dubrovnik. Breakfast, then caught the local bus number 4 to the Old Town. It was reasonably early but the bus was a sardine can. Thankfully I got a seat- I think my white hair came into play again! Accents were Aussie, British, American and all sorts of Europeans. Arriving, we all poured out of the bus at the wall of the Old Town. The crowds were unbelievable! Dobrovnik has not yet worked out how to manage the crowds and endless large tourist bus. The streets were clogged. They could learn from how Budapest manages the Buda side of the Danube. I counted at least 10 tour guides holding up flags, numbers or umbrellas and I’m sure there were more. The cruise ships are also constant visitors and ... read more

Started the day at 5:30 am with an email asking to ring my travel agent. BAD NEWS! The company my Croatian travels has been booked through has gone into receivership overnight. Won’t know anymore until I arrive in Dubrovnik and check in to see if pre-payment has been made. If so all will be ok. If not my organised travel is void. A waiting game ........?. Arrived in Croatia. The mountains as we came into land reminded me a little of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco- rugged with villages nestled in the flat area at the bottom and the water a beautiful turquoise. Driving from the airport takes your breathe away as you come around the corner and see Dubrovnik with the water your guide all the way. I discover at the airport that the company ... read more

Many people that have cruised in Croatia told us that there are numerous restaurants that provide either moorings or a quay that you can stop at for the night with the understanding that you eat at their restaurant. We had not tried this yet so thought we would before we left Croatia. We checked and it appeared that there were a couple of restaurants in a bay that would be on the way south so made a reservation at one of them. We first thought we would anchor out in the bay as it would give us a chance to have a little bit of breeze when we arrived as the days are still quite warm. We got to the bay and tried a couple of times to anchor, but did not have any luck getting ... read more

From the “you never know” department. As usual we arrived at JFK 3 hours early and stopped for a pre-vacation drink. There was a time when my rent was less than the two drinks. We headed to the gate for a 7:05 boarding and an 8:00pm departure. When we were sitting in the boarding area at 7:30 I knew we had a problem. The board listed departure at 8:30, then 9:00. The crowd was growing restless. The captain, Captain Dan, announced that there was a computer glitch, it needed to be addressed and then tested and since the cabin temperature was 107, they would have to cool it down. New departure 10:30. Then the board changed to departure at Midnight. There were now nine people behind the podium trying to answer questions. The crowd was beginning ... read more

Dubrovnik is a Southern Croatian city by the Adriatic Sea, and for a long time, it was just an old distinctive seaside paradise. Today, it is a glorious destination with a lot of vibrancy coupled with the flocking of visitors who are marveled by its preserved heritage and architecture. Without a doubt, its glorified architecture caught the eye of the producers of one of the most popular TV shows for the last decade or so - Game of Thrones. It fitted perfectly with their ideal description of a city set in a medieval fantasy period. Although there were a few special-effects edits, it must be said that a large portion of the filming perfectly utilized the old town's unique buildings as filming locations. The show has a cult following and most of the avid viewers were ... read more
