We all met in the lobby of our hotel at 9am to walk to our bus and head into the old city of Dubrovnik. Once we arrived at the Pilé Gate, we met our local guide Dennis (yep, food Croatian name!),. It was crazy there as there were huge groups of tourists off cruise ships. Dennis told us that there was one day a few years ago where they had over 16,000 visitors into the old city, which isn't really big enough for that to be an enjoyable experience for anyone! UNESCO got involved and recommended they restrict the number to 8,000, which they have done but I believe they will reduce it further next year to 5,000. They will also control how many cruise ships can come into port on any one day. Of course ... read more

We met our local tour guide, Vesna, at 9 am and proceeded on our walking tour of the old town of Kotor. This place is just beautiful and everything I glimpses the "wall of Kotor", I am in awe. The wall is 4 and a half kilometres long and took about 1,000 years to complete. To walk to the top there are 1,400 steps and it is unbelievable how hight up it goes, all the way to the fortress on top. We started the tour at the 'sea gate' in the city wall where Vesna explained that the water used to come right up to this gate, in ancient times. We then walked through the town, stopping along the way for Vesna to tell us something about particular buildings. On tower, just inside the sea gate ... read more

There is one thing we really enjoyed while in dubrovnik, it was enjoying the sunset and our nights out. We have found a couple of nice bars and one restaurant worth mentionning. If you are looking for a nice view point to enjoy the sunset, then I would propose one of those two locations: Bard bar ou Buza bar. The two are fairly crowded at that time of the day, so come early or be lucky to find a nice seat. And yet they are not so easily spotted. You have to go through a tiny gate from inside the city walls to find yourself at the foot of it. Just grand! The atmosphere in both is great but Bard is a bit more fancy, serving nice cocktails while Buza is a bit more rough serving ... read more

After dinner at Magellan restaurant came home straight to bed, everybody exhausted. Rob slept well, Kelly still jetlagged. Up at 5.45am for good buffet breakfast then on the bus at 8.25am Stopped at lookout with best view of the old town Dubrovnik, absolutely postcard vistas of the town and coastline. Then down to the town for a guided tour by Ivana around the town, very busy with tourists but still so pretty. Walked the walls, very warm and crowded. Back down stopped for a cool drink then taxi back to hotel. Relax for the rest of the afternoon and will have dinner in tonight.... read more

Last night was an accommodation fail. The apartment is over a hostel bar where they played music so loud the walls vibrated and then shouted to be heard over the music until 2 am. By 7 am the church bells are ringing and the neighbour is back in the alleyway singing. The bed is uncomfortable and there’s no hot water. Lack of sleep and a cold shower has made me grumpy. To make matters worse, the old man decides against the cold shower so the apartment smells of sweaty old man. Breakfast is ‘included’ – this means the owner has left some eggs and jam in the fridge. There’s no bread but we can go and collect some from his mother’s shop. After we have cooked our eggs we pack and trek back to the car. ... read more

Over the course of two weeks, our tour covered a distance of approximately 980 km and traveling through Albania, Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia. Three of these countries would be new to us. We spent two days in Albania which was only enough to give us a taste of the country before moving on to Montenegro. Again, we had not had much time in the country of Montenegro though it truly deserved more time to explore. However, it was long enough to appreciate its varied geography ranging from the high, lush green Bjelasica Mountains and national parks down to its golden beaches on the Adriatic Sea. Montenegro produces some excellent wines, honey, and figs which explains why dried figs are sold in farmers markets everywhere. As past experience has taught us, tour schedules are not often varied ... read more

Käytiin ennen aamiaista meressä uimassa, hotellin rannassa. Vesi oli mukavan lämmintä. Bussilla keskustaan. Kierrettiin kaupunginmuuri. Siinä on pituutta 2 km ja siinä meni reilu tunti. Etnografisen museon jälkeen poikettiin kahvilla. Palattiin hotelliin klo 12.

Lennettiin illaksi Dubrovnikiin. Hotelli oli Lapadin niemellä rannassa, vanhastakaupungista länteen. Alueella on paljon muitakin hotelleja. Käytiin katsomassa sitä hotellin lähellä eteläran... read more

Wednesday, June 27 , 2018. Episode 3: We didn’t want to leave Dubrovnik- and actually couldn’t! After we split Split, so to speak, Ross and I caught the high speed catamaran down to the magnificent walled city of Dubrovnik. We were due to meet up with our friends, Carol and Alicia Brock, who were flying in from London. We met them at Buza bar, which sits precariously outside the city walls, facing the glistening ocean below. However, the bar was packed. It was standing room only for sardines, so we moved on. Our first stop was Fort Lawrence, a fantastic bastion from which we got super views across the entire city – see first image opposite. There was an outdoor bar by the water at the bottom, so we spent the late afternoon there. After a ... read more
