The waterfalls are only part of the show. The wild water cascades are beautiful in their own way. I have never seen waterfalls or cascades that run right through the forest. I found this very fascinating. As the travertine builds up, the level of the lakes slowly rises. I thought, "It is quite sad that here, among all this beauty, the first shots of the Serbian-Croatian war were fired. The first casuality of the war, a policeman, occurred here. We had read that it is not safe to go off the trails and wander around the woods as there may still be live landmines buried here. You can safely bet that we listened to this advice.... read more

We kept seeing a poster showing an absolutely beautiful picture of one of the falls. I thought it had been taken from an airplane. Surprisingly and happily we found the spot from which the photo shown in the poster had been taken. Here it is. ... read more

Not everything is wild and falling water at Plitvice. There are beautiful areas of quiet also. You can walk beside a roaring waterfall and then by turning and walking a few steps into the forest be in a very quiet place with only the singing of birds breaking and the rustle of breeze blown leaves breaking the silence. The rustle of leaves The singing of hidden birds Music in the quiet... read more
A quiet forest path.
Quiet, but just a bit muddy in places.
Which path should we take?

There is beauty everywhere you look here. The boardwalks lead the walker right beside the falls and cascades. I thought it interesting that cascade in Croatian is "kaskade." We walked about seven to eight hours each day we were in Plitvice, totally wearing ourselves out, but enjoying every minute of the day. I wish I had brought my pedometer along so I could make a fair estimate of how far we walked each day. My feet said eight to ten miles and that may be a fair estimate.... read more

The big falls is 78 meters high. This translates into about 253 feet. The big or high falls is the only one that comes from a spring fed stream. All the other falls and rapids come from lake water falling over the built up travertine ledges throughout the park. Travertine is a calcite deposit that very slowly builds up from very mineral rich water. ... read more

The water is a beautiful green and so clear you can see deeply into its depths and so pure you can drink it directly from the lakes. Anything that falls into the lake is slowly encrusted with the calcium lime that is highly concentrated in the waters. It is like a cave except it is the waters that come from the limestone mountains in this region.... read more

The train rolled into Zagreb on track no. 1 about eight-thirty this morning. Our first task was to find out how to travel from the train station to the bus station as our destination was the Plitvice National Park. Plitvice was established as a national park in 1949 and in the '70's UNESCO declared it a world heritage site. The only way to get there is either to rent a car and drive, or take a bus. The trip is two to two and a half hours. Plitvice is near the Serbian border and it was here that the first shots were fired in the terrible war between Serbia, Croatia and others in the early '90's. I'll talk a bit more about that later. We went to the information desk. A young woman greeted us. "How ... read more

Yes, you read right 2003 - I'm doing a bit of catch-up regarding our travel journals. This is for our records mainly, as most of these journals went out in print form years ago, but we thought you might enjoy a bit of "time travel." Also on this site is a blog on Malta from Christmas 2004. I did a "quiet publish" on this one, meaning it is on our site but you all didn't get notice of it.
