On Monday, 4th September I woke not feeling the best. We decided to skip the morning tour as we had an optional one booked for the afternoon. We had arrived in Vidin, one of the oldest riverside towns in Bulgaria. I opted for a late breakfast and a rest. Fletcher went for a walk into the town and saw the town square with a war memorial as well as an interesting mall. Next to the ship was a memorial to those who died during the Communist era. After lunch I was much better so we joined the excursion to the Baba Vida Fortress and Dos Alamos winery. We first were driven through the town to the Fortress. This was built in medieval times and used to have a moat surrounding it, the remains of which are still ... read more

On Saturday we arrived in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. This added a new country to our tally. In the morning we joined the Panoramic Belgrade tour. This first took us to the Fortress which overlooks the Confluence of the Danube and the Sava rivers. Belgrade means white city and it derides its name from the Fortress which has a white tower. It has been there for centuries but the remains now are mainly from the 18th century. Most of it now is a public park.it has great views and a Military museum, also the zoo is located within the park. After exploring many aspects there we were driven around the city to see many of the sights of this now modern place. We went then to the large Orthodox church of St Sava. This is ... read more

I'd arrived in Veliko Tarnovo quite late the night before. The minibus driver had been kind enough to drop us near the centre of town instead of the West Bus Station, which is about 5 kilometres out of town. It dramatically shortened the walk to my hostel. I was surprised at how quiet the streets had been. I was happy that when I got to my hostel there was still some of the free dinner left. After helping myself to some breakfast, I made a rough plan for my one full day in Veliko Tarnovo. Since Bulgaria had entered a state of lockdown, I was unsure what was open, so my first priority was to secure a bus ticket back to Sofia for the next day to make my flight out. The bus station where you ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling south from Bucharest in Romania to Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria. We headed down to breakfast in the hotel dining room, where I gathered a small feast of muesli, cranberries, dates, yoghurt, warm bread, jam, pastries and fruit tea. We also made some bread rolls with cheese and salami and smuggled them into our bags for the train trip to Veliko Tarnovo. Feeling refreshed, we gathered our packs and headed out onto the street, where we jumped onto a tram and headed to Bucharest’s railway station. We picked up some bracelets and a pendant with our remaining Romanian currency at a small stall, then jumped onto the train and found a spare six-berth cabin which we shared with four others. Before we knew it we were chugging out of the station ... read more

I arrived in Bucharest yesterday evening and had an hour to kill before Shea's flight arrived. I killed time sitting at a cafe in the Arrivals Halls where I had my first Romanian beer, Ursus. When Shea finally arrived, we met our pre-arranged hotel pick up and made our way to the Novotel Bucharest City Center Hotel, our home for the next 2 nights. After a long day of travelling, Shea and I just spent this first night walking along Calea Victorei (Victory Avenue), the street where our hotel is located on. This area was clearly a more upmarket area of Bucharest as we walked passed high end fashion boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops, and restaurants. Not wanting to put much effort into anything tonight, we decided to just have a late dinner at the hotel ... read more

Wednesday 14thJune The campsite is just outside the town of Veliko Tarnovo. It is lovely, overlooking a gentle valley with fields of wheat and sunflowers. It has a swimming pool, bar and restaurant. On the first couple of days here, we have done a morning walk through the fields to a neighbouring village and a cycle ride taking in five different villages in this valley and the next. Along with farmland, the area is full of fruit orchards. Cherries are in abundance at the moment. We have spent the afternoons in the shade and by the pool. I have actually been swimming in this one!! Saturday and Sunday were a respite from the sweltering heat – it rained. Whilst we listened to the radio telling us of record temperatures in the UK, we put on our ... read more

It was an annoying bus ride. There was a kid behind me kicking my seat and grabbing my headrest, almmost giving me whiplash each time. I shoot an angry look back at him but he nor his father sitting next to him seem to care. I don't have a spare seat next to me this time so my heavy, bukly rucksack has to sit between my legs. The air coming out of the vents is smelly, as if it has come through some dude's sweaty socks first. So I was glad when the four hour journey came to an end. I liked the hostel I stayed at in Sofia so much, that I decided to stay at its sister hostel here in Veliko Tarnovo. It was also nice here, but definitely more quiet and relaxed. The ... read more

From Bucharest its a short drive towards the Romanian-Bulgarian border. Since Romania and Bulgaria joined the EU, the border formalities are quite improved. I can remember that in the past we were waiting for hours and had to pay for many unknown reasons. Now we only had to pay 6 Euros to cross the "Friendship Bridge", which is on one end at Romania and other hand in Bulgaria, crossing the Danube river. On the Bulgarian side after the passport check you need to buy a road vignette, which can be bought at the petrol stations on your way. from the border city Rousse we drove to the direction of Veliko Tarnovo. A Bulgarian colleague recommended us to visit a nice village, called "Arbanasi" which is close to Veliko Tarnovo. Arbanasi is one of the most famous ... read more

Geo: 42.7252, 25.4815The cricket eventually buggered off last night, thank Heaven! The music went on for a while but it was a nice jazzy sound, so I didn't mind it. For a short while, it was just a tenor sax playing, and it sounded happy and mournful at the same time.My aunt asked if there's been any problem here with the migrant crisis. It's certainly in the news (though I haven't been keeping up with the news at all) but I don't think Bulgaria has been directly affected at all.We had our long walking tour of Veliko Tarnovo today; the weather was gorgeous … and hot. I don't know what the temperature got to, but there wasn't a cloud in the sky so the sun was just beating down on us. I may need to think ... read more
