Geo: 43.4852, 25.7644Today was another drive day with a stop in this town to visit the fort. It was great to stop in a small town and stretch our legs. We had a great view from the fort of the town, only not enough time here. Apparently we were suppose to pay to enter the fort, but most of us walked straight past the ticket office, a few of the group were busted and told to pay or leave. Walked around the fort for a bit and then we went for a walk through part of the town. It was good to breathe fresh air again. There were two men at a cafe and for a few coins they played music for us. Got back on the bus and went to sleep.... read more

We boarded the train at 13:37 and ran into an American couple from our hostel in Bucharest, Justine and Christine who joined us in our Romanian train compartment. The conductor in our carriage was trying to extort 100,000 Romanian Lei from us for the privilege and when we refused to pay he got quite angry, waving his cigar around and shouting something that not one of us understood. At the Bulgarian border we changed carriages and continued our journey in peace. We arrived into Veliko Tarnovo shortly before dusk and walked for about 40 minutes to a homestay which had been recomended to us. Veliko Tarnovo is a pretty, small town, built into a hillside with all the houses overlooking a meandering stream in the valley. We eventually found the place where we wanted to stay ... read more

Leaving Romania, sadly (haha- laboured point by now im sure) Joel, myself, and the pet that followed us to the train station (Farah from the hostel in Bucharest!) catch the train to Veliko Tarnova in Bulgaria. On the train we met Justin and Cris, two newlywed Americans, who are gong the same way and got booted out of their cabin further up the train. The pimp of a conductor tells us we need to pay the equivalent of 2 pounds as we're in a sleeper carriage without a reservation. Although we tell him we dont want a sleeper carriage he insists that we pay him, but, aware that backpackers get scammed all the time we are steadfast in our refusal to pay until we understand what we are paying for and why we must pay. Because ... read more

Halfway through the 20 minute sleep.

I really don't have a lot to say today, not much to tell really. I've been in Bulgaria for the past 5 days in Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo (велико тарново). They're both nice places, or should I say nice places to tour. They have lots of old ruins around, and generally the Stari Grad (Old Town), is very nice to wander around in and still retains some authentic charm; however, I have to say that Bulgaria thus far has held the enchantment and interest for me like some of the places that I've been previously. Ah, but it is always fun to attempt to read the Cyrillic alphabet (you see my attempt at Cyrillic above with the city name), which is used both here and in Serbia; it makes navigation to anywhere exponentially more difficult. Persze a tulajok utánunk, fényképeiket lobogtatva. :) Szerencsére 3-4 kanyar után kifárad ... read more
