Geo: 42.7252, 25.4815It already seems like Varna was days ago; I can't even properly picture it in my head. It's funny how being on the coach will do that. Our first stop of the day was the Madara Horseman, situated in a national park. We hiked up a little ways to an open area that was once a cave and is, therefore, called the Big Cave. The cliff face looms over the area, so much so that it was hard to bend backward to take a photo. It makes for amazing acoustics, demonstrated by Stefan's clapping, which echoed beautifully. He asked us to be quiet for a moment, and we heard birdsong and trickling water. Due to the presence of water, humans have been there since the 13th century BC.The original cave was used as a temple ... read more

So much is unexpected when you travel and days are full of surprises. I would never have thought of coming to Bulgaria if it was not for an invitation to stay with some good friends who, have a house here in Veliko Tărnovo (VT) . So I have to admit I didn't really have a clue what to expect .. Never been to Eastern Europe ... Would I mange the language ?? writing in Cyrillic script ??? thinking ex communist country , drabness , poverty. But heck if Lorriane and Keith chose to have a house here it can't be too bad. And of course it's been a fantastic revelation and I have enjoyed my time here immensely. Now I know a little bit of history of the country, have experienced kindness and friendliness of the Bulgarian ... read more

Orasul pare medieval din secolul 19, bisericile sunt micute si bine conservate, cu multe case medievale bine ingrijite dintre care cea mai remarcata este Casa Sarafin de pe strada Gurko construita in 1861.... read more

A lot of people love this place but I couldn't get a real feel for it. But I did stay in a hostel that someone recommended not to go to, for two reasons 1. they had a four person dorm to themselves and it was too quiet and 2. they had a 3 month old kitten. I stayed and loved it.... read more

A 3-day trip through Bulgaria. The first day was a short drive to Veliko Tarnovo, with a few interesting stops on the way. After drinking coffee in Ruse, the first stop was at the Basarbovo rock churches, followed by the Ivanovo rock churches, the Orlova Chuka Cave and Nicopolis ad Istrum. Ruse is not a very interesting city, but it is quite cheap. The churches were not very impressive, but the views were beautiful. Didn't spend much time in the reservation at Ivanovo, but it was beautiful anyway. The cave was indeed something to see. It is very different from the other caves I had seen before. A must was the guide's story, which was only presented in Bulgarian. However, I had the chance to hear part of his stories translated by a very nice guy ... read more

It was a peaceful night at Camping Veliko Tarnovo with only eight pitches taken. The site is small and British run with a full English menu including Beef and Ale Pie, Rice Pudding and other Brit delights, the average meal is around 7.5 LEV (approximately £3.30 GBP). With a pool and good new facilities the only real downside is the lack of shade, there is none! Woolly says – I woke up to find that Ian and Jo had abandoned me and gone off for a full English breakfast at the restaurant, “how very rude” I thought before catching up with them and having a good moan. Once the moaning had finished we got James organised with the route to The Fortress Tsarevets on the outskirts of the town. Having only just pulled off from the ... read more

We made the last of our last night in Romania. Having tea at Vampire Camping proved a hit with Ian and Woolly but proved more problematic for me. They only serve one set meal, 4 types of meat with chips and salad for 40 LEI (approximately £7.75 GBP) but being a peskie I had to ask if they could warm up one of my cans so I could join the carnivores. It proved a pleasant evening and as we left the next morning our hosts came to wish us well and safe travels. Woolly says – Jo didn’t know what she was missing out on, it was a lovely meal and well fed I slept like a trooper. With Ollie checked and panting to go we ignored James directions and headed through the Carpathian Mountains. It’s ... read more

I left off on Christmas eve at the hostel. So, I will pick up from there. Unfortunately, Chirstmas eve was not quite as active as was Sunday in Bucharest. So, I went out with my new friends and we popped around to a few different bars. One of the coolest places we went to was called "Deja Vu Russian Cocktail Bar." Apparently, it's the place where Ceauseceu (not sure about the spelling here), who was the Communist dictator, and his men used to come and drink. So, that was pretty cool. I ended the night with a McChicken which, I know, is quite disgusting. I rarely even eat Mcdonalds in the states, but it was the only thing open and I hadn't had dinner. Woke up the nest morning, the 25th, and rushed to the train ... read more

Sunday 8th July 2012 We're off again! After an early breakfast we took the second taxi of this trip to the bus station where we boarded the 0800 bus to Veliko Tarnovo. The main attraction for this town is a castle and the Old Town area and the helpful tourist information office in Ruse said this was not to be missed. Two hours later we arrived at the VT bus station and after retrieving our baggage we turned to see the only taxi there driving off. Undeterred ,we set off in the direction of town, intending to wave a taxi down when we saw one. Luckily one came before we had walked too far, we were walking in the opposite direction! The Arena Tarnovo Hotel advertises itself as being close to the centre of town. It ... read more
