The Antwerp train station is amazing. All the platforms are in a massive glass-canopied structure, and the glasswork and architecture of the central station were almost catherdral quality. Good stuff. I wandered around forever trying to find the visitor's information center only to learn that all the signs pointing me around were obsolete, as the center had been relocated into the central station lobby. There's 1.5 hours of my life I'll never get back! I took in the massive Catherdral of Our Lady and the 4 gigantic Ruben's works inside, toured the Steen Castle and the naval museum therein, and also wandered around the huge shopping district, including all the diamond stores. All the while, music from the movie Snatch kept playing in my head and I had to chuckle. ... read more

People often say that Brussels is the one of the most boring cities in Europe. It doesn’t have the romanticism of Paris, the culture of Amsterdam or the art of Rome. Therefore, it was a very sceptical me that got onto the Eurostar that was to take us to Brussels Midi (a shade over 2 ½ hours) - a weekend jaunt that has planned at the nth moment. Our hotel is in the heart of town - walking distance from the Grand ‘Place and the weather holds up. There is a bit of snow but its been snowing in London as well so its not too bad. The main attractions in Brussels are - the chocolates (try Neuhaus); Mannequin Pis (you will be surprised at how tiny it is) and the French cuisine (mussels in white ... read more

Due to an unexpected 4-day weekend, I had to come up with decent plans for maximizing the travel opportunity. I decided to do Belgium; hitting Brussels on one day, Antwerp the next. Brussel's main attraction (besides the beer in general) is Mannekken Pis, who is about 2 feet tall, naked, and peeing. What a great reason for everybody to congregate from around the globe! I also checked out some dinosaur bones at the natural science museum and soaked up some art by Rubens at the Fine Arts Museum. Still don't know what dinosaur bones have to do with affordable timepieces. Arfeo and Katherine would appreciate that I sat down to enjoy a massive Leffe beer in the Grand Place square, overlooking ornate gilded buildings, throngs of tourists, and the towering City Hall while listening to the ... read more

One of the longer train journeys: Leeds, Northern England, to Białystok, North East Poland. We left at 8am and travelled down to London Kings Cross. The train journey down to London was a smooth relaxing journey, south across the plains of Eastern England. Actually most of this journey is across the plains, really. In future the journey will be easier when trains to Europe will leave from here. From now we have to go via the Underground to Waterloo. The Eurostar trip was not as quiet as we expected - there was a group of guys from the west of England on the p*ss on their way to Antwerp, it was like having tanked up Wurzels on tour. (English reference) We had a break at Brussels, strolling around the immigrant quarter near Midi station. We found ... read more

Today we had to leave Brugge. We had a nice breakfust and set out towards the train station. On the way we walked to "the lake of love." It was really pretty there - lots of swans. We got to the train station with a bit of time left so Adam went out to pick up some more chocolates before we left. He made it back JUST in time and we go ton the train to Amsterdam (which stopped off in Antwerpen). In Amsterdam we waited in a timely line and made reservations for a night train to Munich. Afterwards we took a costly cab across town to the Van Gogh Museum. It was pretty cool to see his original paintings. Being able to see the texture of his strokes and ammount of paint used really ... read more

The rest of the day went alright. Not long after writing before we lost our seats on the train because we didn't have "reserved" seating. So we stood teh rest of the time and listened to our i-pods. We got off in Paris and took the subway to another station so that we could go to Brussels. This time we had to reserve a seat. We split a tuna sandwhich made on a baguette - it was very tasty. The trip to Brussels was quick and then we walked until we found a hotel. It has TV, free breakfust and a SHOWER! We dropped our bags off and walked around. We had dinner at the Brussells Grill and it was good to finally sit and enjoy a meal. Afterwards we found a place to use the ... read more

On our way to the Netherlands we stopped to eat at a restaurant that is actually built above the interstate. People driving to Germany enter the restaurant on their side of the interstate, and people driving to the Netherlands enter on the other side. You go up some stairs and then meet in the middle. There were actually 3 eating areas: a pizza place, a cafeteria, and a fancier dinner place. The building also had a souvenir shop, where we ran into friends from Katherine's playgroup. They were on their way back to Germany. The food was good and Katherine enjoyed the play area for kids.... read more

Brussels, Belgium It is a *very* short ride from Limburg and the 5-city area over to Brussels. 3 ½ hours, with a train change. So when we got to Brussels at 2:30, we met Martin de Wrangel in the train station, dropped our things by his house in the Uccle area, then went back out to see what there was to do on a Saturday afternoon. We ended up walking around the center of town, seeing the Grand Place with its guild houses, and spying on the Manneken Pis doing his thing. It was a very cold, truly Belgian afternoon, complete with a nasty snow-rain-mixy thing, so I took it upon myself to suggest a trip to a book store (it seemed appropriate after all) and after the fairly long walk to get there, we were ... read more

The best way to meet extraordinary characters must be when traveling by train. Rarely do you encounter as many lost souls, in transit to wherever they think they need to go. Most people reach their destinations without any significant difficulties, but it puzzles me how this category of “extraordinary characters” are not stuck in transit for all eternity. Belgium is probably not populated by a higher ratio of “special characters” than any other country, but it is here this particular event takes place. Antwerp station in itself is a bottleneck for the transport between Amsterdam and Brussels, being a non-throughgoing station, where trains have to enter, and then back out again, losing a significant amount of time. No excuse for the guy who gets on here and sits down next to me however to misjudge the ... read more

Probably the only things I knew about Belgium before I got there were that they have good chocolates, and interesting beer. And they do have both. I didn't know though, that Tintin is Belgian. We arrived in Brussels at night, and the first thing that was pointed out to us were the green cross signs that indicated open pharmacies. I think it's a brilliant idea. I mean, if you got sick in the middle of the night and haven't got a clue where to go, all you have to do is run around looking for a green neon cross. Brilliant eh? I didn't manage to get a picture of one in Brussels, but it seems that they're common all around Europe and I got a shot of one in Switzerland. Brussels is where the EU holds ... read more
