So, here we are in Ypres, close to many of the famous WW1 battlefields such as the Somme and Passchendaele. Ypres itself was flattened during the war, but has been completely re-built, even the Cathedral. The Cloth Hall now houses a new museum, which to be honest i found slightly antiseptic compared to many of the others we visited. The Numbers involved in the war even today stagger me. What's more astonishig are the individual stories contained in books written by authors such as Lyn Mcdonald. Much of this area is under sea level, and for centuries culverts had been maintained by local farmers to drain the fields. As the war drew on, these were destroyed by enemy shelling and the whole area turned into a quagmire of epic proportions, not helped by the dreadful winter ... read more

... read more

My husband and I went to Brussels for a long weekend at the end of October 2004. It was not our first trip. We had a great time walking around and spent most of our time in the Grand Place which has the most beautiful buildings... the guild houses. We did partake of a chocolate waffle too, which was more than filling, but very enjoyable! Many places to see are within easy walking distance of the centre. ... read more

We flew from Sweden to Brussels Belgium, NATO headquarters. Once again our plane was full of young soccer players, can we ever get away from them? The airport there is very large and beautiful with all the announcements & signs in 4 languages making everything very easy for us. Once we arrived in Brussels we caught a train to Liege which is about 100 miles south of Brussels and where Cecile lives. Well really we had to catch 2 trains. In Europe there is usually a train station underneath the airports making it very easy for transport to and from the airport. No parking problems there! The airport was so big it took us about 15 minutes to at a fast walk to get from our gate to the train platform, that airport is big! The ... read more

http://www.picturesofengland.com/oxford/cslewistours/ This is the link that gets me excited every time I see the pictures. Mind you, I was the kind of kid who read the Narnia books, then went to the zoo and spent half an hour looking at Aslan, or sat in my closet for an afternoon waiting to meet a faun.  ... read more

I'm in that pre-trip-planning mode again. You know, the kind that gets me in trouble when fellow travellers complain I'm making all the important decisions, etc., whine, etc. (Never mind they're totally indecisive in the first place...okay, I'll back off.) Before I go back to the States this fall, I want to make one last trip back to England. Think of it as paying homage to all the dead guys (and women) who made Senior year especially enjoyable (honestly!) with AP English Lit. On my list of places to go and do are: --London (see plays--Les Mis and Phantom--as well as go back to the British Museum and see all the things I took for granted last time I was there in 8th grade.) --Oxford (This is a major pilgrimage to a kid who tried to ... read more
