We woke up completely refreshed with sore necks from crappy pillows but had a great breakie of croissants, pain au chocolat and muesli then headed out in the sunshine to explore Brussels city a lil! We were really starting to get our French on by this point it was great! Little did I even know, French was the official language spoken in Brussels! I just assumed belgianese! J Anyway, we made our way to the city and walked to a square which we assume was the main square but hard to know. All my patients were telling me about this square which I had to visit but personally i didn’t think it was that impressive! Lots of scaffolding around it which was disappointing but we were in the sun so didn’t matter. We kept seeing all ... read more

Last night I had flown to London and stayed at Sarahs in order to catch the eurostar to Brussels. Ben flew direct from Edinburgh yesterday arvo after skiving off from work for another day! What a drama – lost his phone turns out in the taxi but he had no idea where so my fri arvo was spent tracking it down and track it down I did!! So picked it up on the way to the airport which was handy. Love Edinburgh and their friendly people. Got completely lost getting to sarahs place and had a dead battery on my phone so couldn’t google map, no taxis would stop for me – awesome! Then as ben lovingly points out to me “why didn’t you just use my phone?!” Very good point! Anywho we were all ok ... read more

Yesterday morning Emily and I got on the train from London to Brussels. I felt like I was in Harry Potter because it was at King's Cross station! It was a great train ride, and I would much prefer trains to flying. After we arrived in Brussels, we took a train to Bruges. Our hostel owner picked us up and took us to the bed and breakfast, which was just a little bit out of the city center. It was the cutest place with just three rooms. It was nice to have our own room, unlike most of the other hostels that we stay in. Emily and I decided to walk into town, which was about a 20 min walk. Once we got there we found a resturant that looked out onto a square to eat ... read more

Traveling first class from Newark to Brussels is a total trip. Two bathrooms for seven people just doesn't seem right. Jeanne couldn't believe she had more storage space in her "pod" than she does in her bedroom. The flight attendants were happy to have vacationers for a change, rather than the typical business types who don't acknowledge their presence. The request for some hot nuts went over big and was a good start. Big mistake in not sleeping in order to savor the experience. A mile walk through Brussels airport with carry ons without wheels was a bit taxing. Going to the gate for a flight to Prague on the wrong airline didn't help either, nor did the two hour delay due to fog. And then the prop plane that replaced our original aircraft! Brussels to ... read more

Geo: 50.8371, 4.36761We woke up early at Case de Gadd's and made our way to the Ramsgate train station to catch the 7 am train to Ashford. From Ashford we we took the Euro star train to Brussels. We got off the train, put our luggage in a locker and tried to get a cab. We wanted to go to Moeder Lambic pub for a few beers and lunch. We could not get a cab and could not figure out why. We made our way down to the metro. We bought our tickets and when we got down to the platform there was an announcement that due to a strike there would be no more subway trains running. Back up we went and started walking. We made it there with time to have a light lunch ... read more

Brussels - so what kinds of stereotypes come into play this time? Well, the list is fairly lengthy, as this is Europe's seat of political power after all - let's throw in Eurocrats, fruity beer, chocolates galore, frites on every menu, stylish architecture and a little boy weeing(!), and we get the general impression. Truth to tell, the Belgian capital city is an interesting conundrum, and in addition to all the elements which make the place as European as it gets, there are influences from other continents, namely African, Asian and the odd tinge of the Americas, on the strength of which you could quite confidently call this city cosmopolitan. A 1-day trek around Brussels took in the sights of the Laeken and Heysel area as the first port of call, easily reachable by the underground ... read more

Walking, running, laughing, skating, bicycling, kissing, yelling, crying, watching, loving, hating, whispering, eating, smoking, drinking....LIVING. That's Amsterdam and if you can't keep up, no worries; there's always another party to go to. Welcome back, to all my faithful readers! It's been awhile and I know you're waiting anxiously, fingernails bitten down to nubs to hear an update about me and my travels. Well fellows, I will end the suspense and commence! I have been joined by my mother and together we have flitted, like the beautiful butterflies we are, across Belgium and up into the Netherlands, adding to our luggage chocolates of all kinds, frites sans mayonaise, beers, and pastries galore. First was Brussels and with it snow. I realized as I stepped in my third puddle of suspiciously yellow liquid that it had been awhile ... read more

Well I suspect this is the last quiet period I've got in front of me for a very long time, so I guess that means it's time for an update! I'm fairly certain that apathy's going to keep me from actually finishing this while I'm being lazy in Germany, so for location's sake let's pretend I'm posting this from Belgium. Why am I back in Germany you ask? Well I can officially say I've resolved my long standing visa situation with the Belgian government. And there was much rejoicing. Was it entirely satisfactory? Well no, the visa covers a very truncated period of time, and I'd sort of hoped to dick around in Europe on the Belgian government's permission slip for a little bit longer than May. Still, things like that have never stopped me before! ... read more
